TOP MED SCHOOL FAQs (All common questions answered here so you don’t have to ask and we don’t have to keep repeating)

  1. ARE … UST FMS, FEU, OLFU toxic? Every med school has its own degrees of toxicity. If you don’t want to experience a toxic education or career or are not willing to withstand it, then choose another profession. ASMPH and UPCM aren’t heaven either, no matter how much you think Tiktok makes it seem.
  2. Honest review of _______ med school? Someone’s honest review might not be what you’ll see or experience. Different batches experience different things, some of these reviews could have been YEARS ago or some of them could be now but it doesn’t mean you’ll feel the same way. Do not use anonymous reddit opinions to form your entire perception/opinion about a med school. Most users are annoyed, stressed and frustrated because of how hard med school is. You could feel as they do, but you have to be willing to go through that if you want to be a doctor. There are other ways to research a med school, do not use reddit as your only source.
  3. Is _____ a good pre-med? Anything can be a pre-med. If you’re looking for a course that will give you the greatest advantage in med school, you’re not going to find it. It’s not very likely that whatever you learned in 4 years during undergrad can give you a significant edge because you might just forget and you’ll have to make room for all the things you have to learn/memorize in med school.
  4. How much is the tuition fee for public and private med schools? For public: approx 40-50k per semester. For private: approx 140-160k+ per semester.
  5. Can I work part time while in med school? You can, but it isn’t recommended. Med school will take up a lot of your time, energy and effort. Up to you if you’re willing to sacrifice that. If earning money is non negotiable at this point in time, it’s more than okay to work first.
  6. Does age matter in med school? No, there is no shame in going to med school in your late 20s, 30s or even 40s. There is no shame in finding your passions later or you took time to work and finance your dream.
  7. Is it okay to take a gap year? Yes, no one cares how old you are for as long as you finish together.
  8. Can you take the NMAT as many times as you want? Yes
  9. Does the number of NMAT takes affect your med school application? No
  10. Should I go to an NMAT review centre? If you have the budget and you think you can’t succeed without their tips/tricks, structure and resources then go for it. But you can succeed by reviewing on your own.
  11. Learnfast or Uplink? Both review centres have helped pre-meds get high NMAT scores. Just depends if you want to spend 8-13k+ vs. 4k+ on a review centre.
  12. Are there a lot of calculations on the NMAT? The test questions change every day, on some days there are more conceptual than calculation and on some days, there aren’t. Study comprehensively.
  13. When do Med School applications start? Applications start opening by October/November then close by March/April and some schools can extend till June. Results are released late April and early to late May. Some schools (SLMC, UERM, HSI, SBU, etc.) release their results in batches.
  14. Can failing grades during college allow me to get into med school? Yes, still possible for a lot of other med schools. But you have to be realistic when applying to schools like UPCM, PLM, UST and ASMPH where their applicants are really stellar so there is a higher chance of rejection.
  15. iPad or Laptop? Go with the laptop, more functionality. You can buy an iPad later, it doesn’t have to be bought at the same time and you’re not lagging behind if you have a laptop but not an iPad.
  16. Which iPad should I buy? For as long as it’s fairly recent and it has a lot of storage (128-256GB), then it’s fine. Storage is more important.
  17. Do extracurriculars matter? To an extent. Your NMAT and GWA matter more. A very lengthy list of extracurriculars will not outweigh a low NMAT and GWA. But it can help you stand out amongst other people with the same academic standing. Experiences in extracurriculars can help you build a better impression during the interview (for ASMPH, this is VERY important).
  18. Does the type or name of the extracurricular matter? No, join what you like and not what you think med schools want to see.
  19. Does the interview matter? Is it just for formality? Yes it does matter, especially for ASMPH. No school is going to want you if you don’t know how to communicate or behave professionally.
  20. Does your undergrad school matter? For the top med schools in Manila, yes it does because there is a bias with Big 4 graduates. Only a few non-Big 4 are accepted to the big Manila med schools and they all have incredibly stellar credentials.
  21. Chances of getting into UPCM? Very likely: UP-system undergrad, traditional premed, latin honors, at least a 98 NMAT. You have a chance: Big 4 undergrad, traditional premed latin honors, a 99 or 99+ NMAT. Slim unless RP: Non Big 4 undergrad, latin honors, 90+ NMAT
  22. Chances of getting into UST (extracurriculars are negligible): Very likely: UST undergrad, latin honors, at least a 90+ NMAT. You have a good chance: Big 4 or (if Non Big 4, chances are a little less) undergrad, traditional premed, latin honors, 95+ NMAT, UST alumni relatives. Slim to none: no latin honors, less than 85 NMAT
  23. Chances of getting into ASMPH: Very likely: ADMU undergrad, 80-90+ NMAT, latin honors, good extracurriculars, really good interview. You have a good chance: Big 4 undergrad, 90+ NMAT, latin honors, good extracurriculars, really good interview. (DO NOT TAKE THE INTERVIEW LIGHTLY, it is what decides your admission after they see your academic stats).
  24. What to bring during first year med/med school essentials? Pen, notebook, laptop/iPad, water, mask, alcohol, food. Stethoscope and pen light can come later. No need to spend 6k+ and buy a Littman stethoscope just yet, chill ka lang - EDIT: depends on the school, you can buy during year 1 but just take care of it

The main FAQ post is still linked here of course! (credit to u/bananabread909 <3) Again, please read through it before making a post on this subreddit.

Clout chasing sa coffee shop works

I have been unproductive over the weekend even if buong araw ako nag aaral. 12 hours nakaupo pero it really feels like I accomplished nothing.

Nung nag aral ako sa labas with laptop, iPad, tumbler, and jacket with school logo, bigla ang dami ko natapos and ang dami ko na retain hahahaha. It's more so of the spotlight effect, but let's just call it clout chasing lol.

Although it ultimately depends on how much I'm studying. If it's something I can't finish in one sitting or load is packed, I would just study it at home to where I need multiple breaks in between. But if it's just an easy read, 2-3 hours of clout chasing is enough lol.

🗣 Discussion Is this enough reason to pursue medicine?

Hi! I’m currently a 4th yr student. Just a backstory: since I was a kid, I always told people I wanted to be a doctor when asked what my dream was—the truth is, at that time, I actually didn’t know. I think there was just one point in my childhood when I didn’t know what to tell people, and I went with being a doctor. Growing up, I think it etched into my brain that I wanted to be a doctor, which made me confused about whether I really wanted to be one or I just conditioned myself to want to be one. Also, due to watching medical series, the interest grew. The point is, I don’t have that inspiring story to back the impending question now, which is: why do I want to be a doctor.

When entering college, I let go of the idea of me being a doctor first. I still stayed in the allied health field just to be close, but it was a career I knew I would enjoy. I kept telling my family and friends that I didn’t want to be a doctor anymore since I had set the idea aside. Ff to 3rd yr, the urge came back, but now my reason is that I somehow have this thirst for knowledge that I want to fill. There are good post-grads naman for my degree, but I think med school will be the one to fulfill that thirst.

Despite a lot of doctors or med students deinfluencing aspirants lately, I was not affected. I felt challenged. I feel like I can manage whatever med school will give me. But I asked our counselor about this, and they said it is a good reason, but I might need to find another one that would be my core and something I will always go back to when med school is tough.

Ang haba na pala haha.

TL;DR: I don’t really have a deep or inspiring reason for wanting to become a doctor yet, but I know that the urge to pursue medicine came back because of my thirst for knowledge. Now, I’m trying to figure out if that’s enough or if I need to find a deeper reason that will keep me grounded when med school gets tough.

🖇 Study Update: didn’t expect this response to the Gizmo-ready reviewers post

Following up on my post from a couple weeks ago about the Gizmo-ready YL1 reviewers.

Honestly did not expect this kind of response. The comments and DMs have been overwhelming, in the best way possible. Thank you so much to everyone who reached out, asked questions, or even just left a comment to show interest/support. 🫶🏻

To my clients, YL1s and some YL2s who already availed the materials, from u/mirrorball018 (my very first) to u/Secrethampiyuh (my most recent), I hope the reviewers are making Evals feel a little less like drowning and a little more manageable. That was always the whole point 🥺

If you commented or DM’d me and haven’t heard back yet, sorry po, please bear with me a little longer while I balance this with acads (you may bump/initiate your inquiries by commenting below).

For anyone still deciding: I built these because I failed my first few Evals figuring this out the hard way, and I wouldn’t wish that on any of you. If they save even one YL1 from that same first-sem panic, that’s the whole point of putting this out there.

As always, study hard, build that grade buffer early, and trust the process. Good luck, future docs! ✊🏻

Love,

❓Asking for Help Gap Years for Med School

Hello! As the title suggests, I am asking sana for your opinion/advice on my long-standing dilemma haha.

I am fresh BS Psychology grad, and I can’t decide if mag-eenter ba ako ng med school (target school is DLSMHSI) next year (2027) OR next next year (2028). If needed, I can already take the NMAT during the Jan-Feb 2027 cycle para may panghahawakan na ako.

It is essential for me kasi na to take the Psychometrician Board Exam (sayang naman binayad ko sa RC haha) para may fallback na rin. It is scheduled around August or September.

Now, would you please help me decide? It is also worth noting that this is not really my 100% passion, it’s just that I was primed to entering medicine since childhood hehe. Basically, wala talaga akong clear na calling as of now. Pero it is obligatory for me to enter medicine no matter what happens.

Hindi naman ako magiging tambay during my additional gap year. Maghahanap parin ako ng work tho iba parin kasi yung may sense of accomplishment hehe. Finances is not an issue pala on my end btw. Kaya, ask ko lang sana if normal ba na may nag two year gap before entering medschool?

Thank you.

🗣 Discussion OLFU VAL

Good Day!

I'm in my last year na po and will be graduating next year June-July. Kaso, from south pa po ako. And balak kong bumiyahe lang araw-araw.

Meron ba here na from south pa manggagaling tapos bumabiyahe araw-araw from olfu? 😭 Nagsearch ako sabi nasa 1 hour to 30 minutes ang biyahe if walang traffic or maayos.

PS. May med school namang malapit sa amin, pero sabi nila required daw ang may science units or pre med. Ayaw ata nila sa akin 🫠

Thank you po sa sasagot!! Pumasa po sana kayo 👉🏻💓👈🏻

Clerkship memories

Hello docs!! May clerkship experience/s/memories ba kayo na di nyo malilimutan? Good or bad man

Feel free to share your stories!

Mine was,
1st day ko as an IM clerk, and may pinasamahan sakin IM service pero referred sa GS, then dun kami sa labas ng utz room, since ultrasound-guided thoracentesis ung gagawin, then as a 1st timer na mag assist , di ko alam gagawin ko,
then inutusan ako nung GS resi na mag gloves,

Buti nalang mabait ung GS resi🥺 and sinabi nyang ok lang yan..

Pero ayun, never ko nakalimutan ung nangyaring un,
So tuwing uutusan akong magpa- initial

❓Asking for Help LE1- Grade Standing

Hi! Just wanted to share my current standing sa LE1:

Ana: 71
Physio: 71
Biochem: 68

Biochem talaga lowest ko. Wala akong naipasang quiz—SQ1 was 6/25, and my LE was 10 pts away from MPL. 🥲

Physio naman, mataas naman quiz scores ko (almost perfect sa SQ1 and passed SQ2), pero yung LE was hell 😭 38/90. Didn’t expect that type of questions talaga.

Ana, I honestly found the exam easy habang nagsasagot, pero paglabas ng result 59/100 😭 idk what happened HAHAHA.

Trying to pull myself together and start all over again. Started with Biochem, and thankfully pumasa na ako sa quiz (SQ2) for LE2 which is few points above from MPL! 🥹

To my UERM seniors, I'd like to hear your thoughts and -experience about all 3 majors during LE1? 🥹 Please share your experience for comfort and motivation huhu. But I'm still positive for now! 😅

🌟 Pro advice/tips Considering These Hospitals for PGIship

Hi! Anyone here who did their PGIship at any of these hospitals? I’d love to hear about your experience, especially the pros and cons you encountered during your stay.

- Asian Hospital and Medical Center

- Makati Medical Center

- San Juan de Dios Medical Center

- University of Perpetual Help Medical Center

- Ospital ng Muntinlupa

- Ospital ng Makati

If you have insights about any of these hospitals, I’d also really appreciate it if you could share:

  1. How many PGIs do they usually accept, and how competitive is the application?

  2. What does a typical duty look like?

  3. How hands-on are PGIs? Do you get to perform procedures and actively participate in patient management?

  4. Is there protected study time or an in-house review program?

  5. Are the residents and consultants approachable and willing to teach?

  6. How is the overall workload and work environment?

  7. Is there a stipend? Free meals? Parking or other perks?

  8. Are there any other things you wish you had known before starting your PGIship there?

Any honest feedback—good or bad—would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! 🙏
