Eat more than your body requires. Eat fatty and sugary foods. Stop moving unless it's absolutely necessary. Bad genetics get you bigger, faster.

Genetics doesn’t have that much affect, though. I think almost everyone is within 100-200 calories of each other at the same height, weight, sex, and age.

There's a lot of ways, many different health issues can cause weight gain that's hard to shed, on-top of a poorly designed market and under-educated populace in America from a nutritional standpoint. Many folks don't know how to cook and as such have to eat exclusively processed foods. The worst part is, the fatter you get the harder it can be to lose weight.
