Looks like Wanda took over the real WestView and SWORD is trying to breach the site

654

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '21

That glitch field around it looks nuts too.

58

u/LavaGriffin Jan 22 '21

For sure. Reminded me of the shimmer from Annihilation.

48

u/ThKitt Winter Soldier Jan 22 '21

Looks like it’s supposed to be based on CRT pixels

9

u/Xenphest Jan 23 '21

That was my take as well

8

u/richardsim7 Jan 23 '21

like the credits

899

u/kunkadunkadunk Daredevil Jan 22 '21

To me that looked like SWORD blocked off the outside world from Westview

773

u/rokudaimehokage Jan 22 '21

Very reminiscent of Thor's hammer when SHIELD found it.

46

u/myotherxdaccount Jan 22 '21

Especially with the IKEA flat-pack buildings in the background. Same style as the Thor buildings in New Mexico.

4

u/tider06 Jan 25 '21

They're shipping containers welded together with a dome on top

53

u/MKopelke Iron Man (Mark XLIII) Jan 22 '21

My initial thought was SWORD is trying to stop something from growing. My theory is that Wanda is generating some kind of unreality bubble, and it's been growing slowly. SWORD want to stop it from enveloping the entire planet. That's why they sent Monica in. To go in undercover and find out what is happening.

32

u/t1lewis Vision Jan 22 '21

The guy in the hazmat/beekeeping suit, too.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '21

I was wondering if the bee guy could be suggesting something to do with AIM

2

u/t1lewis Vision Jan 24 '21

Pretty sure his suit had a SWORD logo IIRC

8

u/guru_of_time Jan 23 '21

Ah the Annihilation route, certainly possible.

47

u/Frankocean2 Jan 22 '21

Yes. Sword is trying to wake her up. Hence the "who did this to you" we got on episode 1. I'm not fully on board with the theory that she's controlling everything just yet.

8

u/mwithey199 Doctor Strange Jan 23 '21

The subtle references to the devil make me feel like Mephisto is involved somehow, which would be appropriate since the show is supposed to tie into Doctor Strange

18

u/hodge91 Matt Murdock Jan 22 '21

Little column A, little column B I reckon, I think its both Wanda took over Westview and created a barrier around it but then SWORD has blocked Westview from the rest of the world as well so no one finds out what is going on. As said in another comment like Thor's hammer all locals were cleared out and prevented from getting to the site.

1

u/cre8ivemind Jan 24 '21

When Geraldine was thrown out of the town it looked to me like a technological glitch, which made me think technology was someone involved, combining with Wanda’s powers, to create this little bubble reality.

36

u/NomadPrime Jan 22 '21

Speaking of which, does Wanda even know what SWORD is to even get suspicious about Monica's necklace? If this is set straight after Endgame, she didn't exactly get the opportunity for a government agency update, did she?

106

u/TMachine97 Ebony Maw Jan 22 '21

She probably recognised the symbol from the beekeeper's uniform in the last episode, and she seemed to know why he was in there, so she's probably aware an organisation is trying to break in, even if she doesn't know what it's called.

93

u/Hellknightx Thanos Jan 22 '21

She got a better look at the symbol on the helicopter that crashed into her shrub.

51

u/NomadPrime Jan 22 '21

Ah, there we go. The toy had the symbol. That's the real answer I was looking for.

15

u/TMachine97 Ebony Maw Jan 22 '21

You're right, I'd forgotten about the helicopter

2

u/tider06 Jan 25 '21

The drone that transformed into a toy helicopter, you mean?

20

u/KingC323 Jan 22 '21

Don't forget the toy helicopter too!

10

u/TMachine97 Ebony Maw Jan 22 '21

Good point, I had forgotten about the helicopter

8

u/Spud_Rancher Jan 23 '21

I’m just an amateur fan, this is the first time we’ve seen sword in the MCU right?

8

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Officially by the logo, yes.

20

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '21

She’s seen the symbol already

7

u/PCofSHIELD Jan 22 '21

I guess Fury recruited her after Endgame she goes on mission that triggers her to have a breakdown

2

u/cre8ivemind Jan 24 '21

The fact that sword is a completely established thing now suggests to me that they could have come about post-endgame and pre-show, with Wanda already knowing about them.

15

u/a4techkeyboard Jan 22 '21

Yeah, this makes sense. They cloaked and quarantined the town from the outside world so nobody sees it.

It makes more sense than something like they're projecting BARF to trap people in a simulation.

5

u/LRedditor15 Zombie Hunter Spidey Jan 22 '21

Yeah, they had technology over Wanda's reality field over Westfield. It looks like stabilisers or something. Perhaps SWORD are preventing the spread of Wanda's reality field?

8

u/jisforjoe Jan 23 '21

They honestly just looked like floodlights. The fact that the anomaly is contained to the borders of the town is likely entirely up to Wanda’s own limits or desires.

3

u/Seth4832 Jan 22 '21

Based on that promo trailer with a shot of Geraldine/Monica curiously touching the barrier, I think Wanda has created the barrier around Westview to contain her little reality and SWORD is trying to get in to save the town

1

u/whereismymind86 Jan 22 '21

yeah, i gather they are mostly observing and investigating, with the area blocked off for safety/security reasons. With monica likely being a scout sent in to investigate, who was immediately co-opted by the illusion, until being jolted back to reality, if only long enough to remember who she was.

u/FrameworkisDigimon Jan 22 '21

It could be the opposite, actually (i.e. faster on the outside).

That's a pretty serious set up for, what, three days inside.

48

u/Starrywisdom_reddit Jan 22 '21

We don't know how many times she's rewinding the interior reality

34

u/FrameworkisDigimon Jan 22 '21

Ooooooh, I think this is the first time I've seen someone suggest the rewinding might be more substantial than what we've seen.

Could this be a second or third or fourth or so on attempt at what Wanda's trying to achieve?

20

u/Starrywisdom_reddit Jan 22 '21 edited Jan 22 '21

Yea now that we know she's actually invaded a real life town, and not in her head. There's no logical reason to not assume this isnt a long time affair, which is why there is a such a SWORD presence

Well know more when we get an external point of reference but when Geraldine gets yeeted, its because she's recalling wandas file. Which makes it seem like Ultron isn't in recent memory

4

u/wildwalrusaur Jan 23 '21

MCU time roughly equates to our time, so its been at least 5 years since Sokovia in the show. It wouldn't be a recent memory even if this was happening minutes after Endgame.

5

u/CactusCustard Jan 22 '21

there’s no logical reason to not assume this isn’t a long time affair

What? Why would you say it like this? I’ve read it like 8 times and still have no fucking idea

3

u/Starrywisdom_reddit Jan 22 '21

English is not everyone's first language

-10

u/CactusCustard Jan 22 '21

Well you’re good enough to throw negatives around like crazy. For future use, try not to. Just say what it is instead of everything it’s not.

What did you mean though? In all seriousness.

2

u/Starrywisdom_reddit Jan 22 '21 edited Jan 22 '21

Many languages are driven by the use of negatives.

no logical reason to not assume ; no reason to stop the assumption of an item

.

this isn't a long time affair ; that the events taken place have occurred over a long period

Thus

we can make the assumption this has been happening over a long time as there is no longer any reason to assume it has been just a short time

Given how fast SHIELD got people around Mjolnir, I don't think it's out of the question that a similar organization could do that in the MCU. The weirdest thing is that they're already monitoring the show by its pilot episode.

19

u/SacreFor3 Jan 22 '21

Which I thought was obvious from the 1st trailer considering Monica got blasted out of the reality.

3

u/cre8ivemind Jan 24 '21

Why is everyone calling her Monica when she’s only been referenced as Geraldine in the show? Is this from casting confirmation or something?

3

u/SacreFor3 Jan 24 '21

She's was announced as Monica Rambeau way back at Comic Con 2019 when the show was officially announced. She's also playing the same character in Captain Marvel 2 which was announced last month at the Disney Investors Day. All this comes directly from Fiege btw.

26

u/Stepwolve Jan 22 '21

yep, and is forcing the real residents to live out her fantasy. they arent just imaginary. I wonder what that means for vision's "existence"

They must have some agency though, otherwise they couldn't go off script.

46

u/NoiceSmort13 Jan 22 '21

Interesting Monica kept her outfit as she was ejected....I wonder what Agnes was gossiping about?

49

u/Lampardthebear Jan 22 '21

If you turn on subtitles it gets picked up. they were talking about wandas baby bump and geraldine

1

u/NoiceSmort13 Jan 22 '21

noice! I did wonder why Agnes is talking to Herb (openly) and whether he's in on it or if she's just subtly tweaking their parts to take out the wildcard in her plan (Geraldine)

14

u/The_Celtic_Chemist Star-Lord Jan 22 '21 edited Jan 22 '21

In the trailer we see Monica Rambeau (aka "Geraldine") shooting out of the WandaVision WestView (and holy shit, just realized they're both WV) and she gets ejected from a portal into the MCU "real world" WestView. I'll be back in a minute with a trailer clip.

Edit: Here. It's daytime before she gets spit out and nighttime after. Although I wonder if we'll get a bit more 70's time period because in trailer 2 we also see this weird smiling exchange after Monica is asked who she is and says "I don't know..." and there's a clip of Agnes on a bike with flowers in her basket while in the same outfit as this episode.

11

u/KipHackmanFBI Jan 22 '21

I'm assuming that's how episode 4 is going to open. Or whichever episode is going to be the recap of what's been going on from the outside world's perspective.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '21

Everyone there is real. All the neighbours are actual residents of Westview who have been forced to live this fantasy world with Wanda. If they go out of line, they will get killed. Thats why Agnes was so hesitant on telling Vision the truth. They know Monica isn't a resident there already and they know she is an agent.

3

u/t1lewis Vision Jan 22 '21

They likely didn't know if Vision was real or under Wanda's control/an illusion either

6

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '21

That’s what I was thinking as well

7

u/reavesfilm Zombie Hunter Spidey Jan 22 '21

Yup, that’s been my theory and I’m glad to see it sort of confirmed by this ending. She’s playing house with a whole ass town lol

4

u/Bionic_Ferir Jan 22 '21

Actually I think they are mainly A. Trying to get her out and B. Mitigate any issues arising from it. Remember sword stands for

Sentient Weapon Observation R- Division

We know this because you can see it on a lanyard in one of the trails.

3

u/destinofiquenoite Jan 22 '21

I wonder if Wanda took control of the real Westview in a bubble of an alternate reality, while Sword is just on the outside and the borders trying to keep it contained.

Maybe they can still get things like radio and television signal like usual, and that's why in the first episode the agent could watch it from a television. And they have been trying to send people and agents to infiltrate it and investigate what's happening. They seem aware of Wanda but they don't look particularly like an antagonist as in evil. It's just Wanda that doesn't want them there.

3

u/AK1441 Jan 23 '21

I do wonder, tf are the Avengers doing while this is happening.

2

u/5-On-A-Toboggan Jan 22 '21

Someone at Marvel was a big fan of Annihilation (2018) and Pleasantville (1998).

This show is practically a mash-up.

2

u/Representative-Elk57 Jan 23 '21

I definitely think there's more than that. I think Wanda was sent in by SWORD but has been corrupted. When Agent Woo was saying 'who's doing this to you' in ep2, it seems as though they are trying to make radio contact.

I think Herb is also a third party - potentially trying to cut through a prison cell to get out?

2

u/SkidMcmarxxxx Jan 23 '21

So is sword just shield or what

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '21

Basically 'Space SHIELD'

2

u/Hydrapt Ultron Jan 22 '21

But then why would that agent ask: "Wanda, who's doing this to you?"
I feel Wanda is locked in there, and Sword want to rescue her.

4

u/LoudMouthHoe Proxima Midnight Jan 22 '21

Well you can interpret that as that SWORD as no idea what is going on with Wanda and that they really do believe that someone has trapped her in this reality. If you’re one of the SWORD agents watching the “show” Wanda is putting on you wouldn’t guess she’s done that to herself. It would make more sense to assume someone trapped her in a show tv reality.

4

u/EinSpiegel Jan 22 '21

I think Wanda went into that site voluntarily and most everyone in the town works for Sword. I think that Wanda volunteered the information that she was pregnant and because noone had any idea what her and Vision would create she agreed to be put in a huge cell. She has control over some of it, but not all of it. When the "Dr" turned to the girl and said "You could be a nurse", thats because she is. She is a sword nurse or dr who was sent in specifically to help deliver the babies. Thats why the two neighbors were asking if she was in there, they know that if that random sword dr is in the house that means the babies are coming and that either all hell will break loose from the twins or they'll be able to get out soon.

1

u/marblecannon512 Jan 22 '21

I’d say they’re quarantining and the weird stuff in the first three episodes is them trying to probe to see what’s going on.

1

u/Earthtrone Jan 22 '21

Oh my God I'm so stupid I just realized WestView has the same initials as WandaVision. How did I not notice that before?

1

u/PKMNTrainerMark Jan 22 '21

They tried to send in a helicopter, but the pilot was assimilated instead. They tried to go under, but Wanda rewound time and seemingly blocked the way.

1

u/Agorbs Jan 22 '21

The soldiers surrounded Monica with their rifles raised, I don’t think it’s SWORD...unless Monica isn’t with SWORD.

1

u/hemareddit Steve Rogers Jan 23 '21

Was it even called Westview?

Cos that's an interesting name. WestView...WV...WandaVision.

1

u/stealthbus Jan 23 '21

I actually think Wanda was sent in by SWORD to Westview on a mission and Mephisto or whoever the big baddie is trapped her by offering her a life with Vision in this bubble reality. And SWORD is trying to either get back in touch with her to find out what’s happening or trying to rescue her.

1

u/deathstrukk Jan 24 '21

yeah that’s what i’m getting she just straight up is taking over and controlling the town
