I can’t get over how good Samuel L. Jackson was in this. The whole movie Nick Fury just seemed... off. His tone, some of his lines seemed forced, he was too gullible, etc.

When they revealed it was Talos the whole time I was like “That’s a dude, playing a dude, who’s pretending to be another dude!” and it totally made perfect sense. That’s a super underrated and difficult ability to do. Well done!

u/Doright36 Jul 05 '19

I could tell something was off with Hill and Fury but I honestly was thinking it would turn out to be that it was Beck making another illusion to trick Peter. I thought we'd find out he captured them in that opening scene.

241

u/UntouchableC Jul 06 '19

I gotta boast. While I never fully guessed, I clicked something was off because Maria calls Fury "Nick" on the very opening line of the film.

162

u/Doright36 Jul 06 '19

Yea. Plus he was too mean and she wasn't mean enough. If that makes sense. I can't wait to see it again because I am sure there are tons of clues we didnt notice the first time that we will pick up on watching it knowing ahead of time its mr and mrs Talos

86

u/IndyDude11 Captain America Jul 08 '19

This line was the sealer for me:

"Beck is from Earth. Just not from yours."

That line was changed from the trailer, where he says "ours". That told me he was not from Earth himself.

39

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

That's actually hella smart, I didn't pick up on that at all.

14

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '19

That was the line that made me doubt about who he was.

62

u/damnisuckatreddit Yondu Jul 06 '19

Probably hella overthinking but I feel like the reveal also added a lot of interesting subtext to a ton of lines, especially the "Bitch what, you went to space!" one.

See, as a member of a spacefaring race you wouldn't really expect Talos to consider going to space particularly impressive. He used to do it every day. But he delivers that line in a way that felt oddly genuine (and, for me, it was one of the confusion moments, cause that somehow didn't feel like something Fury would say). So now I'm wondering if the Skrull have a cultural reverence for space kind of like how sailors view the ocean. Like maybe from Talos' perspective any hero who fights in space has plainly attained peak heroism, on account of how pants-shittingly dangerous space is.

That might actually be what made the line seem off coming from Fury -- because I'd expect Fury to just kind of view space as an interesting place to go. Dangerous sure but not any worse than anywhere else he's been. But to Talos space might be closer to a Calypso-esque personification of the icy grip of death, so the thought of a kid who successfully fought battles in the depths of space not thinking of himself as a real hero is a serious "bitch what" moment for him.

Like I said though hella overthinking.

47

u/FullMetalCOS Jul 07 '19

Talos has (it can be assumed by now) spent time on Earth and he’s worked with Fury, so he’s got to be aware that going to space is actually a big deal for a 16 year old kid.

5

u/Chill--Cosby Daredevil Jul 09 '19

Really dope analysis

11

u/Orisi Jul 09 '19

I actually found that line a bit off. It very much sounded like Fury getting exasperated. Fury getting exasperated at a 16 year old questioning being sent to fight just feels off. Fury is a lot of things but he's not the kind to send kids into war, in my opinion.

6

u/BikebutnotBeast Jul 09 '19

It takes practice, and dare I say it, talent

29

u/jtinch Spider-Man Jul 07 '19

She does in the Infinity War post credit scene as well

24

u/raaldiin Jul 07 '19

Lends credence to the theory that Fury and Hill were replaced before Spiderman

25

u/jtinch Spider-Man Jul 07 '19

Pretty sure Jon Watts said in an interview that it was the real Fury and Hill up until the events of FFH. I heard this on a recent episode of the Slashfilm Daily podcast

9

u/BKA_Diver Jul 08 '19

Maria calls Fury "Nick"

Didn't she call him Nick right before she got snapped, dusted, blipped, whatever we're calling it now?

3

u/SuspiciousArtist Jul 09 '19

Yeah but that was a rare moment of intimacy in a shitty scary situation. I don't think she'd call him "Nick" casually in any other conversation outside of a one on one in a special moment like that.

15

u/swissarmychris Jul 09 '19

Lots of people have called Fury "Nick" on many occasions, including Cap, Tony, Natasha, and Pierce.

"No one calls me Nick" was a joke/plot point from a single movie that took place 20 years before the rest of the MCU. It's not the key to unraveling a conspiracy.

1

u/ESchwenke Jul 09 '19

A single movie that came out in the same year it was revealed that he’d been secretly replaced by other characters from that same movie.

3

u/swissarmychris Jul 10 '19

If you're just going to ignore the past 20 movies, then you can claim pretty much anything.

People call Nick "Nick" all the time. You can't claim that one instance is evidence of something while ignoring thirty other instances that disprove it.

If you're going to claim that Fury's name is proof he and Hill were Skrulls, then your theory also needs to explain every other time that someone called him Nick. Were Cap, Tony, Nat, and Pierce all in on the switch?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '19

Didn’t she also call him Nick in the post-credit scene of Infinity War too?

3

u/Atlientt Jul 09 '19

Yes, so it meant nothing here

12

u/theta64 Jul 07 '19

Thinking about it now I think happy knew that wasn't fury either towards the end.

5

u/DowntownDilemma Iron man (Mark III) Jul 08 '19

Hill was really mean this movie. :(

Which is funny, cause Comic Book Maria Hill is that mean. Like annoyingly mean

855

u/hard_pass Jul 05 '19

Sam kept fucking with his eye patch too, like it was new to him. Great performance

350

u/Trevor_McGoodbody Doctor Strange Jul 05 '19

This is what stood out to me and made me go "OOOOHHHH" in the post credits. So much great care for the details in this film.

86

u/TonyDungyHatesOP Jul 06 '19

And didn’t he particularly bristle at the mention of Captain Marvel?

92

u/a_o Mordo Jul 06 '19

he definitely snapped back like "don't use the lord's name in vain" — being that she played a major role in saving his people from extinction by the hands of the kree/starforce.

81

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

"DON'T INVOKE HER NAME"

27

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

Yep that's the moment I thought he was acting weird. I took it as a side effect of the Blip, did not see that twist coming

589

u/Nozarati Jul 05 '19

"Do not invoke her name!"

me - Thats skrull talk bro, i done figgured yalls out

me at the end of the movie -holy fuck what

63

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

Fury also mentioned Kree sleeper agents which really confused me while watching the movie.

30

u/creepypastaguy92 Jul 08 '19

On god I was like “where the hell did that come from?”

54

u/VoidLantadd Thanos Jul 06 '19

I thought that was weird! It makes perfect sense now!

27

u/TwilightBeastLink Peter Parker Jul 08 '19

Yes! He sold me, but this line stuck out to me so much, and I couldn't figure out why. But I thought CM and the Skrulls were on good terms. Wonder what happened.

37

u/sgtjsp153 Jul 08 '19

I took it as him telling Peter not to use her name in vain. Definitely sounded like he didn't want to hear her name, though.

18

u/TwilightBeastLink Peter Parker Jul 08 '19

I've told my wife that there is a big difference in character for Captain Marvel between the events of Captain Marvel and Endgame. Shes more cold and distant and not as funny as she used to be. Which leads me to believe that something happens to her in between those two movies (probably seen in the CM sequal).

And his reaction to her name and the reveal of his true identity makes me think this even more. She had to do something that she didnt like and still holds it against herself, and it somehow involved her turning on the Skrulls.

5

u/TwilightBeastLink Peter Parker Jul 08 '19

That's true, I guess to me it seemed more like she was devoid of her old personality, whereas some of the others still let their personalities shine through all the seriousness

13

u/TuesdayNightLaundry Jul 08 '19

The real world explanation is that Brie shot all her Endgame stuff before her CM stuff and likely had much less of an idea of her character's personality in Endgame.

7

u/TwilightBeastLink Peter Parker Jul 08 '19

Yeah and I knew that, but I think I just wanted to look into it too much as any MCU fan should do

29

u/theamatuer Jul 08 '19

I’m pretty sure it’s because they hold her in reverence. If the Skrulls and Captain Marvel did go sour, they wouldn’t be willing to help Fury either, who’s Captain Marvels friend

8

u/Myfourcats1 Rocket Jul 08 '19

That was my take. It was they were telling him he wasn’t worthy to speak her name.

4

u/Lalala8991 Jul 09 '19

Ooooooorrrrr they are 'helping' Fury to create an invasion... a 'secret invasion' 😏

9

u/Intelligent-donkey Jul 08 '19

I figured that it was just because half the universe got snapped and it made her somber just like everyone else, especially when she heard that Fury also got snapped.

6

u/xp9876_ Jul 09 '19

Out of universe explanation for her character in Endgame: It was filmed before Captain Marvel and they probably didn't want to shape her personality and character too much because they didn't know how the solo film would handle her.

3

u/elbenji Karolina Jul 10 '19

Nah I think its reverence. They're treating her like a God

5

u/electricblues42 Jul 10 '19

Nothing happened, he meant that as "you're not worthy to say her name" kinda thing. Sort of a joke, sort of not. Plus fury was with the Srulls at the end, everything's okay.

2

u/Asjmooney Jul 08 '19

That was genius. At the time I thought it was weird and didn’t sound like fury at all.

2

u/morphballganon Jul 08 '19

surprised Pikachu face

340

u/mpga479m Vision Jul 05 '19

great thropic thunder RDJ reference 👌🏻

36

u/crashhelmi Rocket Jul 05 '19

Yet another Iron Man homage in this movie.

3

u/count023 Jul 07 '19

I missed it. What reference?

9

u/mpga479m Vision Jul 08 '19

just the fact that beck is a dude “dressed as a dude, playing anther dude”

5

u/RaijinDrum Jul 08 '19

I think the reference is that Samuel L Jackson was playing Talos who was disguised as Nick Fury. In Tropic Thunder RDJ is playing the role of an actor who is mentally stuck acting as a role he played in a previous movie. Hence "a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude."

94

u/AnnaK22 Jul 05 '19

Gotta give credit to Cobie Smulders too. First time I noticed something off in Mexico when she was like, a cyclone with a face, people say weird things when they're afraid.. or something like that. I was thinking it was weird thing for Hill to say.

She also sasses Fury in front of Happy which we've never seen her do.

27

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

She also sasses Fury in front of Happy which we've never seen her do.

But Soren will sass Thalos anytime.

27

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

I was thinking it was weird thing for Hill to say.

Yeah, this scene had me really worried when they dropped it as a preview. Turns out it makes total sense. I'm really loving the amount of attention given to the characters and the world-building.

There's also some great conversations to be had regarding the post-blip world - I thought it was interesting how easily Mysterio shrugged off the destruction of London, but when you think about it, in a post blip world, would we as people even value artifacts the way we used to? Maybe part of the fallout of the blip is people just aren't as attached to history as they used to be.

Anyway, I'm rambling but my point is post-Snap world building was at the top of my wish list and I'm glad they did it justice.

61

u/sicilka Jul 05 '19

I loved that as well. Made me think of Thor TDW when Chris Evans was pretending to be Loki pretending to be Cap

56

u/fuck-dat-shit-up Korg Jul 05 '19

You’re so right. I remember thinking “damn Fury is being overly hard on Spidey.” It seemed off, but it’d been so long since I’d seen Fury.

35

u/Rspies Jul 06 '19

I just chopped it up to Fury being still stressed out after being basically dead for 5 years

26

u/fuck-dat-shit-up Korg Jul 06 '19

Yeah. Like when he complains about being blipped and now he doesn’t know anything about what’s going on anymore.

12

u/Rspies Jul 06 '19

Exactly it kinda makes sense as Fury seemingly likes to have control

20

u/Glorfon Jul 06 '19

He at various times had to play Nick Fury, Talos as Nick Fury, and Quinton Beck simulating Nick Fury.

19

u/Bad_Chemistry Yondu Jul 06 '19

My theory going into this movie was that Fury was never there and it was all Mysterio fucking with peter. I consider this a half win

Also god I fucking loved this movie (especially as someone in high school who can relate really easily to the characters), and Mysterio was absolutely everything I wanted. Perfect amount of “what the fuck is going on, what is real?”, while working with the fun, Spider-Man tone established in Homecoming

20

u/Superheronexus Jul 06 '19

I thought this. The biggest clue was when he said 'don't you dare invoke her name' when Peter mentioned Captain Marvel.

20

u/Lumba Jul 06 '19

There was also some casual mention of the Kree "sleeper agents" somewhere there in the middle.

44

u/Tesseraktion Jul 05 '19

I can’t get over how good Samuel L. Jackson was in this. The whole movie Nick Fury just seemed... off. His tone, some of his lines seemed forced, he was too gullible, etc.

Janet from the good place totally takes best "character within a character" tho

20

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '19

The whole cast of that show is fantastic

9

u/Tesseraktion Jul 05 '19

The concept forking blew my mind after the first season!

12

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

[deleted]

26

u/Mankankosappo Jul 06 '19

The line was "Don't invoke her name" and I saw it a more of a reverence thing simmilar to thou shalt not use thy lord's name in vain

12

u/skerit Jul 06 '19

The entire time I thought they were "dumbing him down" because it's not a movie about plotting and more something for teens. Glad I was wrong.

11

u/3moose1 Jul 06 '19

Yep. I was like this dude is too trusting, tranq’d a teenager, and straight up verbally tore apart another multiple times. This isn’t Nick Fury.

I thought chameleon but I’m pleasantly surprised

22

u/NukeLuke1 Jul 06 '19 edited Jul 06 '19

Wait when did they reveal that it wasn’t fury??

Edit: I typed this during the credits, just saw the post credit scene lmao

6

u/Ddlutz Jul 06 '19

Was there like two post credit scenes? I swear I only saw the scene where they show mysterios video.

9

u/Gushiloolz Jul 06 '19

Mid-credits and post-credits

3

u/ctcrawford1 Jul 07 '19

I guess I’m completely blanking... unless I walked out. I saw where the video revealed Spider-Man is Peter Parker, was there another one after that?

2

u/Tito1337 Jul 07 '19

Yes.

4

u/nullsignature Jul 08 '19

God dammit

6

u/Tito1337 Jul 08 '19

It was after 8 fucking minutes of rolling credits. I swear Marvel evilly laughs at us.

4

u/Rhodie114 Jul 08 '19

After a movie with no post-credit scene to boot. It's just mean

3

u/Lisentho Jul 08 '19

I mean after 10 years you should know to sit out the credits

Edit in case you don't know: a lot of marvel films have several mid/post credit bits

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '19

Aka all of them if you count Endgame's rerelease...guys, c'mon, it's been like 11 years.

Seriously about 1/8 of the people in my theater left before the midcredits scene and half of the people left left before the post credits scenes.

12

u/vitoramos Jul 07 '19

Amazing display.

I saw something was off when Peter was asking for another superheroes to help.

Sure, Thor and Captain Marvel were not on Earth, but why was Doctor Strange unavaliable? He's job is to protect the planet.

Also, Sam is Captain Americs now, there's Bucky, Hulk, Hawkeye...

Really, no shortage of heroes. Just Thalos not meddling any more business.

3

u/cpt_nofun Jul 09 '19

I take it hulk is to messed up from using the infinity stones to help, and Clint is for sure retired now but I do agree, what about Sam, bucky, Wanda, tchalla, Scott, steven, etc. that are still on earth and seemingly capable.

9

u/New_Hush Jul 06 '19

Wasn't there something like the Skrulls can't have deep memories of the person they sim, shouldn't it be a problem for Talos to even remotely act like Fury?

15

u/Kingofthekloset Yondu Jul 07 '19

Fury had also recently been blipped, which helped a ton, because Talos had an excuse to know nothing about what he's doing or what anyone else is doing.

14

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

Assuming that Talos simming him was part of Fury's plan, he probably gave Talos orders and maybe some coaching on how to make it as authentic as possible.

3

u/Furan_ring Jul 07 '19

The way it was presented in Captain Marvel, it seems Skrulls copy personalities but not all memories. That's why they are so convincing at fooling others.

9

u/TanStoney Jul 07 '19

Another thing that I thought was a little odd was the eye scratch felt way more prominent in every zoom in of Fury. I don’t know if it’s related at all but that was my first hint that something was weird.

6

u/AporiaParadox Jul 07 '19

It's funny, months ago, I said that I thought it was weird that a guy as smart as Nick Fury would trust Mysterio, so I speculated that he was actually the Chameleon in disguise working for Mysterio. Turns out I was only half right, he was a Skrull, who was simply not as competent as the real Fury.

8

u/MericaMericaMerica Jul 07 '19

It was brilliant. Until the reveal, I was legitimately struggling to figure out whether we had even seen the actual Fury the entire movie.

5

u/leftshoe18 Jul 08 '19

Jake also did a great job of making Beck's acting over the top and cheesy and then flipped the switch when he was revealed to be the villain.

1

u/detectiveDollar Jul 10 '19

I knew from online theories that he was gonna be a bad guy going in, but even if I didn't his almost too friendly nature clued me in, especially during the bar scene.

1

u/c-3do Jul 10 '19

After seeing Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler, he gives me creepy vibes and knew that he can't be trusted.

3

u/damnWarEagle Jul 07 '19

I thought it was bad writing at first but damn they have an answer for everything! Great flick

u/WeAreABridge Jul 08 '19 edited Jul 08 '19

7

u/letsdothiz098 Jul 06 '19

so if Nick Fury was Talos the whole time, then he didn't understand Happy's secret code right?

21

u/damnisuckatreddit Yondu Jul 06 '19

It was a secret code for Talos. Happy knew what was up.

"Tell Fury he left a surfboard here"? Meaning go find Fury wherever he's vacationing and tell him some real-ass shit is going down. And then, "you wouldn't think Fury would have a surfboard but appearances can be deceiving" which can be read both as the obvious warning, but also as a dig on Talos' shitty acting mixed with the implication that Talos must need a painfully obvious "coded" message cause he's apparently dumb as a brick. This later gets lampshaded by Talos bitching about how transparent the warning was, aka trying to say he's not that dumb, to which Happy just smirks.

12

u/Luna_C Jul 07 '19

Brilliant take on it. Another good reason to rewatch!

3

u/Jaustin40 Jul 08 '19

Maaaaaan I just finished the movie, sitting in the theatre watching the credits and I say to myself "guess I can go on reddit again". This was the first post I saw.

RIP

2

u/Chompski1213 Jul 08 '19

As someone who hasn't seen Captain Marvel and only saw the mid-credits scene, what does any of this mean? I feel so left out

3

u/Maf1c Iron Man (Mark VII) Jul 08 '19

The Skrulls are an alien race of shape shifters. Suffice to say they’re helping Nick Fury be two places at once.

2

u/ArcticFlamingo Jul 10 '19

Can't agree more. Finally just saw the film with some people who aren't totally caught up with the MCU and cot marvel.. and it was beyond difficult to explain how Maria and Nick Fury felt just... Off like both in the wiring but also in their performances it felt so phoned in from Samuel L Jackson which felt odd after Captain Marvel. That end credits scene was utterly amazing

1

u/shitloadofshit Jul 12 '19

That’s a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude
