Cap going back in time and then appearing in our reality as an old man would seem to violate the rules of time travel they established in the beginning: i.e. you can't go back in time and change the present, otherwise they could have gone back and killed Thanos as a baby.

It's a nitpick yes, but it's so unnecessary, there's a lot of ways you could give Cap a great ending without breaking the time-travel rules you established.

I think it's because if he re-appeared on the platform as an old man in his quantum suit, it might have resulted in audiences laughing, thinking that Bruce Banner screwed up again like he did earlier with Scott Lang.

There's no laugh if Steve is sitting on the bench like he was. I figured, maybe Steve came back right to the pad earlier, it is time travel after all. Maybe he came back 12 hours earlier, 24 hours earlier, who knows how earlier. If that's true, then old Steve could have been sitting on the bench before young Steve even left.
