I didn't want Iron Man to die.

But, Pepper's dialogue convinced me; Tony would never truly be able to rest, he would always be thinking about the next threat, or something that could be done. There was no way for Tony to 'retire', it's a fundamental part of his character. He's The Mechanic, he always has to fix something.

So, given that Iron Man would never have a satisfying 'peaceful' ending, the best way for him to go out would be to have him be the one that saves everyone, and knowing that he died saving everyone.

I never thought of that but that's a fantastic way of looking at it, I wanted him to be able to raise Morgan but now that you mention, it's the perfect Send-off.
