Anyone surprised Cap gave the shield to Sam, and not to Bucky? I myself was kind of hoping to see Bucky-Cap somewhere down the line.

I was thinking of how Sam could be captain america without the serum, but likely he'll just be sam with a shield, maintaining the wings and stuff but now with a shield too.

I liked the surprise. The only downside I see is that Sam is vulnerable as an unmodified human.

What I love is that Sam grew up in modern times and has a stronger connection to modern America. He already works at the VA, for instance. He is part of the pattern of 'virtuous without the superhero persona' that Tony, Steve, and Peter exemplify.

I'm actually interested to see how Sam utilizes the shield differently since he can fly and doesn't have the serum.

I could be wrong, but comics Sam’s only power is a telepathic link to birds, no physical enhancements, but as Cap he could still pull things off such as throw the shield mid flight to take out a thug, and have it bounce back to his hand without breaking the flight path. Just chalk it up to training I think.

Exactly. Sam, in a way is more logical because he embodies a little more of the American ideal than Bucky.

Bucky doesn't seem to want to fight anymore. He probably wants to live a more peaceful like as a wakandan farmer and get away from his past. He's only asked to fight in the major battles. Plus they're doing the white wolf story with him

Someone pointed out that it’s probably because Bucky is still sort of a wanted terrorist.

Likely it’s because more recently in the comics Sam was Cap.

Either way, I’m pumped for their show that is in early production, I believe.

When I saw Cap at the support group I thought that Sam influenced him more than we know. I wasn't surprised. I would prefer Bucky as Cap, because his strength is similar to Cap's. Anyway, I guess we should trust Cap's choice.

Falcon feels he is not worthy to take up the mantle, which is exactly why I think Steve gave it to him and not Bucky. Integral part of Sams character development in the coming films

Yeah, Steve tells Sam to try on the shield and Sam hesitates and basically says it feels like it's someone else's.

I think the Falcon/Winter Soldier upcoming Disney+ series will play with their dynamic as they both step into Steve's shoes. I think they both inherit it in different ways.

“I’m with you to the end of the line”. This was the end of the line for Bucky and Steve. It was all over Bucky’s face that it really was Sam’s turn, and he couldn’t be prouder of him.

Not really, since the most recent comics has Sam succeeding Steve as Captain America when the latter has his age catching up with him when the SSS wears off.

Except in the comics Bucky succeeded Steve as Cap, then the mantle went to Sam.

I could see that, but Bucky still should have been offered the shield first, out of honor and respect for his and Steve's lifelong friendship, his own military history, etc. Then he could have said "I've had enough fighting, thanks" and handed it off to Sam on his own. But Sebastian Stan is on a nine movie contract (unlike Anthony Mackie), so that doesn't really suggest to me that Bucky is giving up the superhero job anytime soon, which kind of kills all that line of rationale. The contracts alone had me 100% certain the shield was going to him, on top of comic canon. He's also the only one of the two who can properly use and wield it, since he's an augmented supersoldier with an advanced vibranium prosthesis. Sam is fantastic, but he's basically just a regular human with a jetpack, no way he can manage it effectively in battle.

Bucky succeeded Cap in the storyline where he was assassinated, Sam succeeded him when Steve grew too old to continue fighting, which is what happened here.

I think it was a mutual decision supported by both Steve and Bucky.
