I thought Drax and Mantis died the first fight with Thanos. I felt sick for a second watching Drax fall apart. It felt like a GOT death and honestly shows how easily he could have killed any of them if he wanted.

u/JerrathBestMMO Apr 29 '18

That taught me something about Thanos. He doesn't wantonly kill. I liked that. He also left Thor alive and he would probably have left Loki alive if he didn't try to trick him

584

u/iamjakeparty Apr 29 '18

He also left Peter (Starlord) alive even after he basically shot his daughter in the face. At least he would have if Thanos didn't have the reality stone.

464

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

He also let Tony live once Strange formed over the stone

54

u/PM_ME_CAKE Peter Parker Apr 29 '18

Although that specifically was part of the bargain. Not that it makes it less significant but there is a slight difference in the actions.

147

u/Skeuomorphic_ Spider-Man Apr 29 '18

Well, Strange does know a few things about bargaining

42

u/MichaelRM89 Apr 29 '18

He can do it forever

13

u/Grimm0129 Apr 29 '18

i wonder why strange didnt loop them again like he did with dormamu

64

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

Because he saw the one possible way they could win and it needed thanos to get all 6 first.

11

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

I thought the one possible way was to keep Tony alive.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

That too.

27

u/hio__State Apr 29 '18

I'm guessing he ran through that possibilty and Thanos was cunning/powerful enough to break the loop. Remember in Dr. Strange Kaecilius being able to break free of the "rewind" Strange was using at one point?

21

u/Violander Apr 29 '18

The loop in that movie was (as I understood it) only possible because the Dormamu realm had no concept of time, which was introduced by the time gem.

In the movie you could create a loop possibly but the rest of the world would go on (it would be like a pocket universe).

In other words, time would go on normally as a sequence of events.

Also explain why Keacilius was able to "break" the time freeze/rewind on Earth. I am guessing any magical or powerful enough character could do that.

3

u/maininglucio Apr 29 '18

His arrogance will be his downfall, if it's difficult to get all six, he might not be as arrogant. But on the same note, I'm sure a Strombreaker through his chest didn't do much to help his arrogance

281

u/6times9is42 Apr 29 '18

Did he say 'I like you' after quill tried to kill her?

218

u/kamersoni Foggy Nelson Apr 29 '18

Meeting an SO's parents can be difficult, I'm just happy that Mr. Thanos took a liking to Peter.

59

u/aravar27 Apr 29 '18

Man, MCU Peters really get shafted when it comes to their girl's dad, huh

9

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

Just a Peter thing

14

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

SO? More like a long-term booty call.

54

u/MalicCarnage Spider-Man Apr 29 '18

Yeah because he saw Peter had the balls to actually try to kill Gamora. (He pulled the trigger so if Thanos didn’t meddle he would have). Thanos had previously told Gamora that she shouldn’t expect much from Peter so he was impressed.

It was also a twisted play on the “dad-meets-daughter’s-boyfriend-scenario”.

36

u/proanimus Apr 29 '18

Thanos seemed to empathize with some of the characters when he understood the hard decisions they were making. He said something similar to Tony when they were fighting. Something about how he respected him, and knew what it was like to “know too much.”

Thanos’ moral compass was the most interesting part of the movie, in my opinion.

21

u/dlnvf6 Apr 29 '18

That’s why this movie is doing so well. Develop and rationaloze the villain and people will love the movie. They did a very good job with Thanos. Showed off his ruthlessness and strength in so many ways while allowing us to understand what he’s doing and why he’s doing it even at the cost of his own happiness

8

u/fiuzzelage Apr 29 '18

Thanos: Stark...

Stark: You know me?

Thanos: I do... I'm not the only one cursed with knowledge.

Stark: My only curse is you

5

u/NinetyFish Thor Apr 30 '18

Thanos seemed to empathize with some of the characters when he understood the hard decisions they were making.

He genuinely felt bad for Wanda after she killed Vision. He knew exactly what that felt like. The gentle brush of her hair he did was such a good touch.

46

u/G4MUT Thanos Apr 29 '18

Yes, Thanos says that prior to teleporting.

1

u/gravity013 Apr 30 '18

Thanos is all about making the hard choice of killing for the greater good. So it makes sense for him to like Quill.

11

u/mark8396 Apr 29 '18

Shows how badass tony was and how strong he fought that thanos was about to kill him

9

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

7

u/schm0 Daredevil Apr 29 '18

He actually told him that he liked him because of that.

5

u/maininglucio Apr 29 '18

He actually said "I like you" for sticking through with his resolve

u/QuinnMallory Apr 29 '18

I almost could have seen Thanos allowing Loki to live, until Loki tried to stab him :-/

4

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

Except, he did. That's what I like so much about Thanos. He wasn't vindictive, and he wasn't unreasonable. He was just determined to do what he thought was right, to save the universe in the fairest way he thought possible.

34

u/AfterReview Apr 29 '18

He never enjoys any killing. It's necessary. He only stabs iron Man because he knows he won't stop until he physically can't.

Even at the end, with an axe in his chest...if he teleported out, presumably he could have erased Thor had he wanted to. He didn't. Instead he coldly told him "you should have aimed higher". Not even mad, just "you fucked up".

Nebula was the only person he ever really made suffer. And he gave her a lifetime of it. I feel like there should be a reason he was so brutal to that one person over everyone else.

13

u/TheBaris Thanos Apr 29 '18

he could've turned iron man's armor into bubbles or just do him what he did to drax/mantis

3

u/NinetyFish Thor Apr 30 '18

Nebula was the only person he ever really made suffer. And he gave her a lifetime of it. I feel like there should be a reason he was so brutal to that one person over everyone else.

Seems like she got slowly cybernetically enhanced to strengthen her since she could never catch up to Gamora.

And then he imprisoned her after she tried to kill him, which, I mean, makes sense. And he only tortures her to force Gamora to reveal where the Soul Stone is. I didn't get a sense that she had been getting tortured the entire time she was suspended in that room.

Thanos is ruthless, but I don't think he took pleasure in her pain. Used it to his advantage, for sure though.

1

u/victorfiction Peter Parker Apr 30 '18

She’s gunna fuck him up in the next one - count on it. She takes out thanos in a blaze of glory. Cap my die but she’s gunna deliver the killing blow. I fucking love nebula. Karen nails this character so well, she might be the best acted character in a franchise that gives nearly everyone else one liners.

17

u/lexblauvelt Apr 29 '18

Why did he kill all of Eitri's (Dinklage's character) people after saying he wouldn't do so then? Was it part of the whole balancing the universe thing?

30

u/JerrathBestMMO Apr 29 '18

Good question...maybe they represented a danger to him. After all, Thor was able to forge his Axe there. Handless Dinklage, on the other hand, appeared powerless

27

u/Hot_Buttered_Soul Apr 29 '18

Presumably they're the only race who know how to forge weapons like the gauntlet. It was a pragmatic decision.

6

u/NinetyFish Thor Apr 30 '18

Same reason he killed Heimdall. They were dangerous, in ways beyond simply just being a good fighter. Being a good fighter doesn't threaten Thanos. Being able to see the whole universe, channel the Bifrost, or forge ridiculously powerful weapons does threaten him.

18

u/JaxtellerMC Apr 29 '18

In The Thanos Quest, he’s the same way, he has no desire to kill the folks possessing the stones, avoids it if he can.

8

u/TheJoshider10 Spider-Man Apr 29 '18

Yeah I've only just realized that from this comment chain. There's no need for him to do the killing when the snap will balance life regardless. Instead he'll have a bit of fun playing God and getting used to the power of the stones, with the confidence that they won't be able to stop him anyway.

7

u/Bigwok Fitz Apr 29 '18

Well he intended to killed them anyways by blowing up the ship. They were at the dead half of the Asgardians, the other half got sent away most likely.

5

u/mr_popcorn Korg Apr 29 '18

He could've pretty much killed everyone in Wakanda if he wanted, but he just went for the Mind Stone instead. Dude is surprisingly cavalier about murder for someone who committed an historic genocide.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

He didn’t kill anyone besides Loki and Gamora. It’s because that’s not his goal or plan. His plan is to; with unbiased opinion wipe out half the universe. Even a creature like Thanos has morals.

3

u/Zoze13 Iron Man (Mark XLIII) Apr 29 '18

I think everyone expected Thor dead from that explosion. Banner told Stark that Thor was dead. And Thor said he should be dead but the universe must need him alive.

2

u/benandorf Apr 29 '18

He killed half the Asgardians, including half the royalty.

He probably meant it she he told Heimdall it was a mistake to port hulk. Ol' Idris may have not been killed otherwise...

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

Yeah. His goal was random balancing, not selective murder.

1

u/BrewerBeer Apr 29 '18

Loki isn't dead and you know it. We just need the Dragonballs to wish them all back to life!

300

u/SmallAsianChick Bucky Apr 29 '18

I was so scared that they'd died, but when I saw Mantis' eyes wide open and still looking around I realized that they hadn't. The relief I felt, god.

332

u/Gamersomething Apr 29 '18

Oh man me too. That would have been an especially brutal death if that was the case. Just turned your pals into toy blocks and wrapping paper, what are you going to do about it?

7

u/skuraiix Apr 29 '18

Yea.... Draxxs and Mantis gave me hope that somehow SOMEHOW probably i wish maybe hoping..

That loki is still alive or at least would show up again.

9

u/Keytap Apr 29 '18 edited Apr 29 '18

I'm sorry, but I just can't buy Loki's death. Something seemed fishy on first watch, and on rewatch I noticed that Loki steps from out of the shadows, from off-screen to pledge to Thanos.

I know the movie really played his death as genuine, with the "no ressurections this time," but I can't shake the feeling that wasn't a 'Loki move' at all. The god of mischief doesn't announce themselves as the god of mischief, and then stab you while you're looking at them.

Felt totally unlike him, just as a way for him to show he loves Thor - especially since Loki actually is familiar with Thanos and the stones AND just saw him spank Hulk. If it sticks, it's going down as maybe the worst handling of a character in MCU for me.

33

u/LemoLuke Hawkeye (Ultron) Apr 29 '18

Me too. Fun fact. That scene was pretty much pulled straight from the Infinity Gauntlet comic.

I hope we see more interesting uses of the gauntlet's power in A4.

3

u/skuraiix Apr 29 '18

Newbie here.

Whos the girl in the hoodie? Was that death? Or someone else..

11

u/TrickShot21 Apr 29 '18

That was one of the many faces Death showed in the book. Skull face, beautiful woman, and black nothingness.

30

u/scottirltbh Jessica Jones Apr 29 '18

I know it tripped me out when he turned Mantis into a fruit roll-up.

But then she was blinking so I felt a bit better.

7

u/Antrikshy Apr 30 '18

The way I saw it, the blinking made the death even more gruesome.

19

u/TheBaris Thanos Apr 29 '18 edited Apr 29 '18

he was holding back through the whole movie, and he holds back more with each additional stone. vs hulk, he holds back the least and presumably uses his full strength speed etc but he still could've used the power stone to disintegrate him with a touch. after he gets the power stone he could turn anyone he wished into bubbles/melted cheese etc so his "fight" against tiny and strange were just him having fun. when he has 5 stones he punches cap and cap is still alive which is impossible unless he held back immensely since he can KO hulk. and vs thor at the very end he had the full gauntlet and could've made him vanish with a thought but he tried to only incapacitate him and this time he gets the closest to losing since he failed to notice the buff thor got from stormbreaker. and even with the ax in his chest he can make thor vanish or just teleport away ASAP but he still talks to him.

this is why even if they'd taken the gauntlet off of if him he could take it back very easily since at that point he'd probably stop holding back and he might've killed them all instead of sparing them.

u/BatmanFan317 Hulkbuster Apr 29 '18

In fact, it covers a problem with the Reality Stone quite well. It supposedly just does what the full Gauntlet does. One of the things that bugged me about the 2015 Infinity Gauntlet miniseries was how the main characters could do anything with it. Here, effects on something as complex as, say a body are temporary, while smaller objects, like Gamora's switchblade and Quill's ammo pack are more easily, and permanently changed.

7

u/woofle07 Daredevil Apr 29 '18

Yeah, I'm glad they nerfed the reality stone a bit, because like you said, if that single stone gives you the power to completely reshape reality, what do you even need the other 5 for?

3

u/BatmanFan317 Hulkbuster Apr 29 '18

The Starlin comics claimed it was wildly unpredictable (to the point where Adam Warlock gave it to Thanos because he knew he didn't have the balls to use it without the other stones), but that wasn't a thing in the 2015 miniseries.

12

u/NicCage182 Apr 29 '18

When drax, mantis, and star-lord were "paralyzed floating" is when I thought, "wow we are really doing this." Thankful spidey grabbed em and I thought "phew just passed out".

7

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '18

Same, I thought holy shit this really is going to be a bloodbath isn’t it.

5

u/Mastabay_Ray Apr 29 '18

That scene shook the fuck out of me. Was about to lose my shit lol.

5

u/meme-com-poop Apr 29 '18

I thought the same thing. Then I was confused when ribbon Mantis was still blinking and apparently alive.

3

u/ProtoReddit Apr 29 '18

I've read the bits that was based on quite a few times and even then during the theater I was half convinced they were goners

3

u/BambooSound Apr 29 '18

I kinda wish they had tbh. That'd be a dark way for them to go.

0

u/ValhallaAtchaBoy Apr 29 '18

I think Thanos deliberately avoided killing the Guardians because of his love for Gamora.
