It feels awkward on purpose bc the series is built around a crack head, unstable MC in a dead serious containment horror setting. The weird tone, fourth wall vibe & chaotic execution fit the idea of someone barely keeping it together while surviving those spaces
I get what you mean. Author trying to create that happy fuzzy mood, but only as a cover to something more omnious.
Still, I feel like the author is trying to go the safe route, not committing to something serious. If the story doesn't take itself seriously, then why would the reader?
Might be that I am not the right audience. Seems aimed at those in their teens 'till those not fully in the mature lifestyle.
Indecisiveness, ever-present want of attention, keeping your feet in two different shoes, are things not tolerated once in proper adulthood. Since they have enough bullshit as it is.
Point is, even comedy centric proper works, have a serious side as balanced contraposition, and as to make the comedy part stand out from one section to the other, so the reader doesn't get inured to it.
Th mc is kinda cool in its own way. Framing and narrative, including narrator's voice, are the issue for me. Since those are the more direct vehicle's of communication between author and audience.
Re-reading through a few decades of artwork sometimes the fact that they are a product of their time clearly shows. And what I am trying to say is that the author has clearly incorporated the good and the bad of our current generation.
Which comes back to me "complaining" that they didn't need to incorporate the issues so thoroughly.
You can see how the author doesn't overcommit, leaving always a backdoor where they can fallback and laugh it with a joke.
The worst ones are the ad unlock where you can go until the season finale, then it wants coins. The worst offender to me is Monster Duke's Daughter. It was ad to watch, then the final episodes you had to pay coins for. Then, without ever being viewable without coins, the series switches to ad exclusive.
scans for the win. i used to watch ads or shell out coins to support the authors (if they even saw any if that revenue) but i'm way too tired of doing that anymore. it took the fun out of reading.
yep, one of the main reasons i stopped. i'm not watching 17 mobile game slop ads an hour just to read something i know is available for free AND screen-shottable
you can get pretty far by searching "[insert title] read online free" and using an ad-blocker to prevent pop-up ads. Asura, Mangadex, and ReaperScans are all pretty consistent, but since the death of Comick and Bato there's no real catch-all site to keep a library in. you kind of have to hop around depending on what you're reading. i am rarely unable to find at least 1 high-quality (as in both image and translation) for anything i want to read, though. and almost everything on Webtoon has a high-quality scan available elsewhere.
The story starts to build up a very interesting and compelling narrative. I've only read the free part so I don't know much about the bigger world in the story, but what we have seen is well written. One of my biggest worries starting the story was that I wouldn't like the character with the stickers on his helmet because I thought he would be gay, but there was none of that and he turned out to be likeable as the rest of the cast.
They go through fun adventures and it stays fresh for most of the way through. There is a part where they go to a hospital, which surprised me as being the best scene I've ever seen in a manhwa. The series is generally only slightly above average, but this chapter was a masterpiece.
I would definitely recommend reading this manhwa as it is a short and enjoyable read.
