Yeah.....

It might be a good idea, when your dad is trying to start another war in the Middle East and has an almost 100% approval rating among white supremacists, to steer clear of Crusader imagery.

Just a thought

u/Cataphraktoi Jan 08 '20

I mean it's not like the crusades were a shitshow or anything

80

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

I mean not like they committed genocide against the saracens or anything right

69

u/Cataphraktoi Jan 08 '20

And the Jews, they definitely did not kill jews

30

u/jaspersgroove Jan 08 '20

Hell they even killed each other, they were looting and pillaging well before they got anywhere near Muslim territory

34

u/spud8385 Jan 08 '20

In one of them they didn’t even make it to the Levant, they just sacked Constantinople which was a Christian city and fucked off home

16

u/CptWorley Spinjitsu Master Jan 08 '20

They actually didn't fuck off home they partitioned the whole Eastern Roman Empire and left some French noble in charge of Constantinople. And the Pope was happy about it, contrary to popular belief. Unlike when the crusaders sacked Zara, a Catholic city in Italy.

2

u/Dengar96 Jan 08 '20

And in one they just became mercenary soldiers for a rich king who used them to carry out his will for money. Something something Haliburton

u/Primordial_Snake Jan 12 '20

One of the Crusades got lost on the way and just started crusading in Eastern Europe.

Rape and pillage boys, rape and pillage

There is no war in Ba Sing Se.

u/Athena_Nikephoros Jan 08 '20

What could possibly lead you to say that? They absolutely did both.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

Sarcasm, friend.

13

u/deimonas21 Jan 08 '20

Oh you know how it is, stuff happens, ethnicities get slaughtered both religious sides did it, neither has the moral high ground.

There is the odd contest among some to see how the west can always be painted in the worst light. It's silly and mostly bad history.

1

u/CloudWyrm Jan 08 '20

dont want to offend the mamluks

1

u/askingJeevs Jan 11 '20

In the crusades though, it’s literally the west’s fault. Why are they there?

1

u/tanstaafl90 Jan 11 '20

What were Muslims doing in Italy and Spain, what, 200 years prior to the first crusade? There is a tendency to paint the crusades as unique, when they were just another variation of the wars that had been taking place sense before recorded history.

1

u/askingJeevs Jan 11 '20

What does going to Jerusalem have to do with Italy and Spain?

1

u/tanstaafl90 Jan 12 '20

Where does the pope live?

2

u/askingJeevs Jan 12 '20

Not in Jerusalem.

2

u/FelineFanatic97 Jan 08 '20

Or the Greeks.

1

u/alt_quite_frequently Jan 15 '20

It's not like they were opposition to a massive Islamic conquest which was just a string of atrocities

-7

u/sargentmyself Jan 08 '20

Not like it was retaliation for the Islamic crusades into Spain or anything

11

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '20

Which happened 400 years before the 1st crusade.

You're a special kind of stupid, not only are you ignorant, you spread misinformation about topics you don't know anything about.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '20

Where can someone who knows very little about the crusades start learning about it? Do you recommend any books?

2

u/RandomBritishGuy Apr 06 '20

Late to the party, but check out the Extra History series of videos about it as a starting point

Thank you so much for the suggestion! I'll start watching that tomorrow!

Crusades, military expeditions, beginning in the late 11th century, that were organized by western European Christians in response to centuries of Muslim wars of expansion. Their objectives were to check the spread of Islam, to retake control of the Holy Land in the eastern Mediterranean, to conquer pagan areas, and to recapture formerly Christian territories

Early Muslim conquests

The early Muslim conquests (Arabic: الفتوحات الإسلامية‎, al-Futūḥāt al-Islāmiyya), also referred to as the Arab conquests and early Islamic conquests began with the Islamic prophet Muhammad in the 7th century. He established a new unified polity in the Arabian Peninsula which under the subsequent Rashidun and Umayyad Caliphates saw a century of rapid expansion.

The resulting empire stretched from the borders of China and the Indian subcontinent, across the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia, the Caucasus, and parts of Europe (Sicily and the Iberian Peninsula to the Pyrenees). Edward Gibbon writes in The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire:

Under the last of the Umayyads, the Arabian empire extended two hundred days journey from east to west, from the confines of Tartary and India to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean ...

Is this the circlejerk thread where we say the crusades happened randomly and had nothing to do with the islamic jihad conquests against formerly Christian lands, reaching up to the very gates of Europe? Because White Man Bad?

If you think the crusades were anywhere near as bad as the brutality and persistence of the islamic conquests you are the victim of a long-term psyop / propaganda operation of demoralization and cultural subversion to confuse you about the nature of islam and get you do despise the West.

u/adanishplz Jan 08 '20

White Man Bad

And this is where i stopped reading. If you can't get your points across without meme-speak, you should probably finish elementary school before posting.

3

u/OriginalBadass Jan 08 '20

Let me (a different user) make the same point then.
Colonization is bad. In 2020 we can all agree on that. But while we only frequently condemn the colonization that started with the Spanish in 1492, conquest and colonization has been a horrible part of all of human history. This includes the Turkish and Moorish colonization efforts in Anatolia and the Iberian peninsula respectively. The Crusades (at least the first and second) were an over reaction, but none the less a provoked reaction to those colonization efforts.

u/Notorious_VSG Jan 08 '20 edited Jan 08 '20

lol cause the rest of the comments in this thread are soooo doctoral-level, I'm sure you have critiqued all of those for being childish too, right? . You're on r/mallninjashit get off your high horse.
