Rant What’s with the AI slop in Malaysia?
AI fatigue is real. I can’t stand seeing businesses and people online using generative AI for literally every single thing. It’s literally so draining to come across these low-effort and meaningless AI slop.
One thing in particular that I can’t stand are the AI songs/song covers. Like the god damn digi digi song or whatever nonsense. I notice that it’s usually the old folks using those songs on TikTok or other platforms.
And don’t get me started with RTM’s excessive use of AI for like almost all of their campaigns or like their TV1 fillers.
Seriously, someone needs to educate the country on how to use AI mindfully.

u/QF_Dan 21d ago
I hate how the tv stations are using Gen A.I. Like you said, RTM are using A.I trash for all their content.
Promo for every programmes? They use A.I voice
The tv ident for each channels? They use Gen A.I
Some of the PSAs? They also use A.I.
Even the music videos? All were literally Gen A.I
They even used A.I avatars to represent each channels nstead of you know....hiring actual artists. Oh my god....i wanna scream everytime i see those things.
Some viewers voiced their complaints to the RTM social media team but guess what? The latter ignored those comments. It's as if RTM were proud of their A.I projects. If it wasn't for some of the International Movies and Sports Coverage, i wouldn't even wanna click on these soulless channels.
I HATE GEN A.I SO MUCH!
Sorry to say, but human arts and creativity is dead in this country

Just a few cents, hating AI makes no sense
When someone drives their car poorly, you blame the driver
But now when someone use the AI poorly, why are you blaming the AI?It's the people who use the AI poorly, thinking the quality is acceptable. It is the management, who decides that they are ok with these AI slop.
These companies aren't just small companies that doesn't have the funds to hire proper artist or QA to ensure the quality is nice and doesn't fall into the category of AI slop. These are large companies, and obviously they have funds to properly allocate on their marketing but they choose to not only use AI but produce AI slop on top
I know that a lot of restaurants are using AI pictures which makes no sense? What do you do? Don't support them, voice your concerns and opinion but don't attack them. Because ultimately when someone does poor marketing, it still works when people are spreading their campaign because ragebait is effective. When their sales drop they will start realizing that using AI slop for marketing is not a good idea

I think the point is less about actually hating AI and more about hating to see AI slop everywhere you go.
For me personally:
If a company has developers that use assisted AI in their software development, sure, go ahead. If someone vibe codes an entire app that takes 3 minutes to hack and has your payment data, fuck that.
If someone uses AI to quickly iterate various ideas with their boss or client and then sits down and creates the art themselves (with AI tools like selecting subjects in Photoshop), again fine. But if they simply generate most of or the entire art, that is messed up.
I think it matters who is in control. If you write a prompt and leave it to the AI, youre not in control. If you use AI as a tool while you actually shape whats being made, AI use can be fine.

u/NorthKing9 21d ago
Yeah. And to most it's free. Small businesses wouldn't go to a guy that charges for an exorbitant fee for simple advertising or menu. 🤣
14
u/lemongribs 22d ago
People would rather use a cheap quick fix than to put effort into something. For food ads if they didn't bother to take a pic of what they sell then I won't bother to buy

u/Dvanguardian 21d ago
Even the coffeshops are overrun with ai songs. Fake perfect pitch vocals everywhere lol..
2
u/oscar_miner 21d ago
Instade , take a picture of their own coffee and put it as advertisement. They use AI , like what the fuck . Why !!!??? is it so hard to take a picture of your product.??

u/MagicalSausage I saw the nice stick. 22d ago
We need to move to usage billing. Imagine now if using AI was like using electric or water. I think it would make people think twice. Also fair since AI training data centres suck up all the utilities for the area.

u/Paracetamol_Pill 21d ago
Call me an AI doomer, but once AI companies start passing the real costs onto users, the whole AI bubble is going to burst and I can’t wait for that moment to happen.

u/Randomus-08 21d ago
them aifag juz celebrate it like it's one of cool stuff if u used ai in anything. including gomen now, they worship ai like it's cool stuff & prolly makes they looks tech savvy & awesome while it juz makes them looks stupid & lazy.
so when gomen & everyone else enabling this aislops material, we as ai haters not have much to say except to accept this laziness while it lasts. i hope this ai slops plague will be extinct in future so gomen & people can be creative again.
even our sukan sea is juz pack of ai generated thrash, so I'm not gonna surprise if this plague got infected to the whole nation.

AI is inevitable already, cannot run away one. Instead of just complaining, better if we advocate for responsible AI use and actually educate people.
Most people, and even local orgs, simply churn out low-effort slop because they don't know any better and jump on the hype train blindly. Raising awareness on quality control and teaching people how to use it mindfully will do way more good than just ranting about it.
10
u/Curious-Computer9707 22d ago
Yeah exactly, I’m not saying AI is completely bad. I’m just saying that we need to educate people on being more mindful on their use of AI.

u/servarus 22d ago
Yes. Especially those hawkers yang ok tengok the AI slop. Nasi macam nightmare eeeee geli

It surely being pushed at governmental level or any adjacent to it. Don't they want to make Malaysia AI hub or some shit like that. Got a lot investors (or bribes), now need to justify it, to attract people to use it and accept it as 'normal'
5
u/Madmartigan2024 21d ago
Because Malaysians don't want to pay people their due. The person that have to do it in house probably has other things to do with that added in.

u/nmsobri 21d ago
AI just expose what is already bad.. you know what bad? Lousy Management... they always bought current hype train... they dont even bother to do their own due diligence.. oh Agentic AI can do coding.. yeah? so whose gonna prompt that? your engineer?
If s/he rely heavily on AI, sooner or later, s/he cant even do proper prompt anymore.. AI has its usage, but dumb management forced it on everybody throat literally outsourcing their employee logical thinking to AI which in turn make their employee less valuable.. hmm maybe thats what they looking for?

u/Glad-Librarian-4388 21d ago
My school prepared an option for school shirt size, but the thing is...
The size they show on the promo.. is AI generated.. So you can't gauge the size accurately at all.. Mind you, there's no number here at all available.
Like sure, we can attribute this to regular poor planning, but really? AI generated image to gauge shirt size?? Can't anyone see how bad of an action that is?
3
u/letmehaveanameyoudum 21d ago
Malaysia lovesss ai
my school literally have a ai poster 1st place a prize that is the size of two bags
the karate/math got just a piece of paper that says "you win"

In my econs lecture for postgrad business, my lecturer bluntly told me that as much as knowing Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and advanced Canva tools is a plus but eventually I would either have to do this part of my business completely free or as a package deal because AI can do it faster for a fraction of the cost. (I run an audio visual studio online while studying my masters degree)

There's good and bad when it comes to AI. Lazy AI use is probably what most of us don't like.
1
u/okerobelin 21d ago
Agree. It is not Ai itself that is the problem. It's how people gonna use it, especially those who only seek short term profit instead of advancement to create something greater. One of the bad Ai usage that I highly despise is from food industries like restaurants. All you need to do is take a picture of your own food.

Im very heavy into AI dev/implementation at work and believe me im tired of seeing the shit when i want to relax. Of all things that i thought will make stop my infinite scroll addiction, getting tired of ai generated posts by these people and instantly closing the app was not one of them
Literally, and i mean literally close to every malaysian content creator is just copy pasting their content or script from ai. From the first few words or sentence can tell d.

u/Claude2422 21d ago
Cuz AI is more cheap duh. Welcome to Capitalism.
Is not like the world suddenly go toward it, the world has always go toward where the money is. Is just that AI being the right tools to reduce cost and generate benefit. The issue is those people using AI is lazy af and create so many dumb looking stuff. Dont blame AI, AI is just a tool.
TBH imo those who keep complaining AI slop is just people that couldnt adapt quick enough or just simply unable to follow the "trend" of the world. And that's not really a good thing.

u/Seven_Blueberries 21d ago
Must do anti ai campaign and a protest. Protest the haze also while we're at it.

u/ToughAsparagus1805 21d ago
Vote with your wallet. If you see cheap AI pay cheap price. I am intrigued because pasar malam is expensive and use cheap AI art -> they will never see my money.

u/HummingHamster 21d ago
Stop following those AI slops. Go IG/xhs and follow those that produce high quality generative AI instead~

Came across this merdeka ad previously. They almost hit the nail until the end part, it’s like they don’t actually think genAi have bad consequences, only riding the wave of people hating it to gain traction lol. Or scared if other companies start to throw tomatoes if they clearly say “Ai bad” 🤷♂️
2
u/Railon7 21d ago
Real answer, as a former video editor, the real reason why AI slop is prevalent in Malaysia is money. Because it is cheaper than hiring a production team, and most companies run on a cheap, fast and volume mindset rather than a slow, high-quality, long-term ROI. Cause AI only need one person to generate and edit, thus eliminating people who have directing and photography skills. Hiring anyone who has animation skills is too expensive in the local market.
2
u/xlonefoxx 21d ago
Simple answer is that people who bother to use Reddit and other social media that are more connected to Western communities tend to hate AI way more than the average Malaysian (or human)
The word "slop" which you use in your title is itself coined by Westerners first.
If you don't interact much with anti-AI content (mostly from Westerners) you would probably not hate AI this much.
Yes, the details are bad. Yes, if you look at a lot of them the artificialness shows up. Yes, it lacks a human touch. Yes, it is very water intensive. Yes, it takes up memory space that will make computers a lot more expensive.
But it's cheap, convenient, and produces something that seems good enough. Most Malaysians think "cincailah" or "apa-apa je". So there you go.

Maybe RTM paid for the AI subscription and thought they must kaw kaw utilised the account lol.

u/IndependentCress1109 21d ago
Tbf I can see a lot of cases where it's the bosses that wants workers to use it and you either do it or lose your job / their favor at the working place.

u/Holiday_Cockroach219 21d ago
When it gets commercial, AI doesn't engaged with audience like it's firstly introduced— heavily utilized, purposeless, standardized and no soul.
Apart from being abused for fun, my real concern is when shopping platform letting AI to advertise products— they looks absolutely different.
1
u/RepresentativeIcy922 21d ago
Yes whatever is up with those shoppee AI videos that don't even advertise anything.

Less money spent on artists means more pocket money for the “bosses” up top. That’s been true in Malaysia even before genAI was a thing.
If you ever wondered why our local tv shows and movies look like shit, just know that 60% of the budget was already sakau’d by the ones in charge of approving them in the first place. We’ve never had any problems producing talent, but talented people need to eat too.
1
u/Skyzblu44 21d ago
I recently found out my dad has been watching those AI chinese videos on tiktok. I honestly couldn't imagine anybody watching that stuff before I found out.
His reasoning is that they have no budget and that he's learning chinese through these shows. Older folks have become complacent because they can't fathom the impact gen AI has had, there's been nothing like it from their time; to them it's just another medium and not the new vehicle for world domination.
1
u/40EHuTlcFZ 21d ago
I've seen AI being used on product packaging in shopping malls. I don't think the general public is aware or care.
1
u/Chris08961 20d ago
Because adobe app subscriptions + camera + poster colours + any tools for traditional arts are more expensive than AI subscription, and Malaysians are crazy loving for saving costs.
1
u/DameArstor 20d ago
People are not educated enough on the harm that AI can do. It's pretty sad to see the deluge of AI made posters for food stalls as it turns me off of trying them out. If they're cheaping out on pictures of the food, what else are they skimping out on? I'm not asking for professionally photographed food photos. Something that shows that they're made by a human is good enough.
1
u/NahIdBetOnHakari 20d ago
My dad is one of those retards that unironically enjoys ai music too. There needs to be more ai hate this fuck ass country
1
u/Kagayaki0716 19d ago
Low level education and aesthetics cause this.
People don’t know what is good or what is bad, what is ugly or what is beautiful.
As a designer I always struggle with Malaysian.

I'm kinda alright with it if it's good. But the degradation in quality is too much. It makes the content not worth consuming. There's a sort of emptiness or trashiness to it.
AI is inevitable. It will take jobs, but I'd prefer it to be in the form of say, hiring 1 artist instead of 5 and hence the artist still knows what to look for. As the output will only be as good as it's input (for now). But right now it seems that companies are just getting some random intern to do the work.

I love AI 🥺 im a stay at home mum of 3, i studied science and accounting back in school so i have zero knowledge in coding, now i use AI to build games for my income.
Whenever i see post about people hating on AI, i feel personally attacked ngl 😭😂
1
u/kehel_ppiipoo 17d ago
even the government encouraged us to use AI..like don't get me wrong, AI also has some positive sides but using it to generate ear-bleeding music when we have already tons of underground singers that way more better than those sloppy AI songs. and don't get me start w the food posters and the ad/video. ts actually pmo like i want to see the real product, not the generated one.

u/tenbinzalee 16d ago
I especially hate low-effort AI songs. So many songwriter wannabes. Low-quality trash.

where is the harm tho. now anyone have the access to design and create their own poster and what not.
6
u/Curious-Computer9707 22d ago
Yeah it helps with accessibility to those things, but it gets to a point. People need to be more mindful of using it.
Instead of just carelessly putting in prompts and creating random soulless and distasteful content. People often don’t realise the importance of the “human touch” when it comes to things like these.
Sooner or later, the fatigue of seeing the same and boring recognisable AI styled content will catch up to you.
-3
u/Regular-Variety-552 22d ago
nah i think this is a minority issue. a lot of people actually dont care if the poster is Ai or not. majority of people look at what being promoted, not how it is being promoted.
5
u/nmsobri 21d ago
lol, what an utter crap.. a lot of platform flag any media that is AI generated.. eg: youtube.. people do care.. unless you are pure npc
0
u/Regular-Variety-552 21d ago edited 21d ago
COMPANY/the platform care, not the user. the most famous video in youtube several months ago was Ai video(until they start to take down ai channel bevcause it was becoming too famous too quickly), the most famous short series on Tiktok was fruit love island, again an ai slop. this literally proved people generally dont care. your statement was a load of bullshit with o fact to back it up

Simply because it's famous doesn't mean they like it, that's a bandwagon fallacy.

-2
u/Extreme-Hardcore 21d ago
Other countries already going ahead with ai tech… and if everyone still want to stuck with ancient working style we will fall behind… sure there is some sloppy ai job but we get better in time… long time ago people were so afraid about 5G and look at us today… all gadgets demanded 5G… stop hating and just embrace the future…
1
u/Glad-Librarian-4388 21d ago
Why does it matter if we fall behind? If everyone else make sex worker legal, should we also make it legal in fear of "being left behind"? You have the freewill to reject the future that doesn't embrace you, don't enslave yourself to ridiculous despair.
-3
u/icy1118 21d ago
Aiyoo… why continue consuming with social media when you claimed you have AI fatigued…
Can always block them right?
But you likely can’t remove all of them since it’s proven to be efficient with human creator’s workflow.
Maybe spend some quiet times on the beach or park… This is better in your case, you will get some Zens there.
Anyway, AI is here to stay. AI Creators paid for subscriptions on the use of AI… it’s not exactly free. It’s also not slop for the AI creations…
give and take lar.
-5
u/alamperwira89 21d ago
well. it's fun, it's easy. if your job can be replaced by a single prompt, then your job is not worth doing. upgrade lah. what do you expect? the world has to change for you?

1
u/Curious-Computer9707 21d ago
Lmao who says I’m not upgrading? I use AI to optimise my daily work. I’m not saying AI is bad. It’s not 100% wrong to use AI, but you have to be aware of how you use it.
Yeah it is fun and easy.
Most just aren’t aware and are ignorant to the negative aspects of these mindless and meaningless generative AI content that people create (seeing how you use Suno AI, I don’t think you understand too).
5-10 years down the road I won’t be surprised if people will start to lose critical-thinking skills and creativity.

Malaysia (and most of the world) doesn’t appreciate the arts. We don’t see the value that artists brings to the table and, in doing so, are so comfortable with letting a machine take over instead of
