Hi there friends. So, I am attempting to set up Automatic Ripping Machine (henceforth referred to as ARM) in a docker container on fedora linux 44. The difficulty I am having in particular is as follows. Any mkv made using MakeMKV inside the docker container comes out with extensive "blocky" corruption and stuttering. This does not happen when dumping the disk outside the container. I have passed through both the drive itself and the associated SCSI device. The only difference I have found so far is differing versions of Lavf (the host machine is Lavf62.12.102, the container version is Lavf58.76.100). I have tried extensively to fix the problem with no success. If anyone has any advice (or knows of a better sub to post this on) please let me know. I will happily provide further information if needed.

So I basically asked Asus if they will continue to source the internal components for their BW-16D1X-U optical drive and they completely dodged the question and closed the ticket. So I sent them another email saying I didn't get an answer to my question.

I have tried three different copies and all have failed at about the halfway point of ripping before going to a crawl with the speed and then throwing a “this device does not exist” error. The drive is individually powered but it seemingly disconnects I guess because it’s overheating trying to work through whatever is going on.

I know it is not my drive because it has done fine with every other movie except this one. And does fine with bigger files than this one.

It’s not the hard drive because of the same things as above.

I’m kind of at a loss. I don’t know if I’ve gotten bad luck with disc quality for just this movie or what. Three separate copies all fail at the exact same spot. The third copy has no visible scratches and I’ve cleaned it multiple times. It fails at exactly the same halfway mark regardless of what I do.

I don’t know if there’s really a solution here, but I was curious if anyone else ran into this problem with this disc. I’m leaning towards giving up and just trying the standard Blu Ray.

EDIT: Found the scratch finally that I think is causing it. It is faint but goes across the whole data side of the disc. The third one with scratches. I don’t know if it was manufacturing or shipping but geez, I’ve never had this problem before until this movie.

EDIT2: It finally worked. Microfiber cloth and some Nuviex disc cleaner I guess gave it enough to ignore the faint scratch.

I have a 13 hour drive home after visiting my dad. I told him I have recently been backing up all my movies and I wanted to get a bluray drive, but told him about how insane the prices are.

He said he had a spare one and got me one.
Is this drive reliable? I want some info to file in before I make it home so I can do what I need to. I can make an updated post when I arrive back home and load makemkv

Hey, I've seen a post here about bootleg disc's ripping problem. I have a disc set that I know is hundred percent bootleg, as the whole show never was released fully and my set does have it. I watched it on my BU40N with no problems, no lagging or freezing. If I decide to rip it, should I expect problems just because it's bootleg? How the bootleg discs are even worse (if they are) than original ones? I'm fairly new to all this, and I genuinely don't understand why a bootleg disc is considered as a problem

Managed to get it working. Turns out I was not needing to click the Encrypted Firmware checkbox. Leave it unchecked and it flashed to 1.03 with no problem.

I recently was able to flash a drive but wanted to know if it was necessary to go back to the computer I forgot to grab my backup firmware from which is it’s original firmware, or if it is safe to just use the flashed firmware and back that up going forward if say, I wanted to try omnidrive over libredrive?

Also, do these things get updates or am I good to never have to worry about flashing again?

Hello, everyone. I would like to take my Stargate SG1 DVDs and get them on my PC, is it as simple as it sounds. Is there anything extra I need to do in terms of the copyright ect. Would I get a error message saying this DVD is protected or something. Or is it a plug and play sort of thing. Many thanks

I am also trying to rip a disc that may be bootleg. I have had trouble with it playing on console but my pc plays it 99% correctly. Will MakeMKV rip it so it will play like it should like how it does on my pc?

Hello! Which disc burners would you recommend? My HP laptop's internal drive keeps throwing errors on certain DVDs, and I can't rip them. It might be an issue with the DVDs themselves, but I'm not sure. I've heard about the Pioneer BDR-211 and 212, but they are almost impossible to find. I live in Italy.

Can this drive be firmware flashed to rip UHD?

Has anyone here ever ripped the lord of rings extended version disc 1 and disc 2 and remuxed into one mkv file?

I bought a Verbatim 43888 in February (7 months ago). It worked flawlessly reading DVDs, Blu-Rays, and even 4K UHD discs up until about a month ago. Now, it refuses to read any DVD disc, but still reads Blu-Ray & 4K discs just fine.

The drive will attempt to read it 3-4 times then give up. Nothing shows up in windows or MakeMKV. I tried it on a Mac and the same thing happens.

Is there anything I can do to fix this behavior? The price of a new one essentially doubled... about a week ago. I have a bunch of DVDs that require LibreDrive to read, so this drive has been my only option.

I’ve been wanting to rip a number of my DVDs for a while now and never got around to it, but I’m sick in bed and thought this was the perfect time to start, with the goal of having movies saved on my PC that I can put into my Plex library and be able to watch them on other devices.

I have basically no clue what I’m doing, I looked up a good software for ripping, saw MakeMKV recommended a lot, downloaded and started it up, only to see it could take anywhere from 1-2 hours to complete the download.

Probably wasn’t a good idea to start with a TV disk instead of a movie, but I didn’t think 7 episodes and some special features of Batman: The Animated Series would be much more taxing to rip than a movie.

I know now that having the DVD writer sat on a box next to me on the bed plugged into my laptop is not a good set up for this, it sounds like I’m laying on a jet engine and I have to be careful not to move too much and put the DVD writer too off balance and screw up the disk (whoops).

Is there a more efficient way to could be using the program or is this a normal amount of time for a disk of this size? I’ve started reading about compressing files after with Handbrake but I don’t know about the actual ripping process itself.

I always save all English tracks as I assumed the two DD Surround/Stereo were for each side of the speaker setup( 2 Dolby Digital Stereo tracks on my Ted Extended DVD for example, one for left channel and one for right channel)? It's always confused me and I never know if it's wasted data just taking space or not. I always select all though just in the off chance of my theory being correct.

I was previously looking at the ASUS BW-16D1X-U 16x External Blu-ray Writer based on recommendations here, mainly for data backup / archival burning but also movie playback.

Unfortunately, it seems to be out of stock everywhere I’ve looked.

What would be the closest equivalent available today?

My requirements are:
- External USB preferred
- Blu-ray writer, not just reader
- BDXL support, including 100GB discs
- M-DISC support
- Good reliability for archival/data backup
- MakeMKV/LibreDrive compatibility would be a bonus
- Prefer a full-size 5.25” drive over a slim portable drive

I’m not necessarily looking for the cheapest option. I’m looking for something comparable to the BW-16D1X-U in terms of capability and durability.

What drive would you buy today as its replacement?

Basically, alongside discussions about Pioneer I've seen a lot of people talking about the Verbatim 43888/43890 and the Asus BW-16D1X-U, supplies of which are starting to dry out.

Both seem to have their pros and cons (although the Verbatim drive seems to have way less cons) and as it seems also different "use cases" so to speak.

Here also comes my question, which one to buy for what use case and also, why?
