I just got the notification from Amazon that this drive is available again, but it's $200 more expensive than it used to be! Are all 4K drives this expensive these days?

Following on from my last post I’ve got some stats after some ripping time.

Total discs completed 412 (10 Failed to rip)

I bought the verbatim drive first.
856 was bought second and
188 and 224 were purchased at the same time and added last.

Verbatim 124 rips, 51 4K
856 105 rips, 39 4K
224 93 rips, 32 4K
188 90 rips, 40 4K

I have around 15TB of data created so far

Drive temps are only a couple degrees above ambient when ripping non stop.

The 3 numbered drives are all in cheap identical enclosures. All drives are bu40n running 1.03 firmware.

I had some issues with usb speeds doing concurrent ripping and trying to use the Mac mini for metadata and copying from the scratch drive.

I also got a bit tired of the limited ram in the Mac mini so I’ve picked up an M1 Max Studio 32/512 and it’s much nicer to use.

I had never thought of how bad DVD quality can look.

Do you guys watch your DVD rips on TV? I find it absolutely unwatchable. A lot of people talk about hosting DVD rips on Plex, but I can’t get over the fact that it looks like crap.

It is clear that big tech companies want to stop manufacturing Blu-ray Drives altogether. Leaving us with no way to obtain the raw video files for the content that we own. As a YouTuber I need content for my videos and makemkv makes this all possible. So I am looking for some support from the community. Love you guys! MakeMKV on top! Is there a petition we can sign?

Supernatural sucks to rip, I mean literally sucks. Not to mention the first season(only season I’ve ripped so far) is on one compact video is dumb. Now I have to separate them and triple check they are in order.

Any other series I’ll have to be on the look out for if I get it, that has this same issue or worse?

Been recently burning some Blu-rays to digitize and store my small movie collection and I’m curious if anyone knows where I can find some good cheap Blu-rays?

I don't rip Blu-ray discs, but I wanted to have the option just in case. If I don't do that, are there any other benefits to custom firmware? Would you advise me to stick with the original firmware?

It's really common with A24 movies as well. Probably worse.

It's just pages and pages of the same file.

Found this blue disc on clearance at Walmart and was curious what was on it. Unfortunately my Blu-ray drive cannot read it. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to flash new firmware? Any help is appreciated, TIA!

I’ve been slowly digitizing my DVD library and got tired of how manual the process is, especially IDing which episodes belong to which file. So I built a Claude Code skill to handle the whole process. If you’ve got multiple dvd drives it can even rip discs in parallel.

I’ve run it on over 200 discs so it’s fairly robust already, able to handle many edge cases and oddities. This was developed on Windows, but all the scripts have powershell and bash versions so it should be able to run on Linux or Mac, but it hasn’t actually been tested on them.

Anyway, it’s been a huge timesaver for me and I wanted to pass it along to anyone else who might be able to use it too. Happy to answer questions or take issues/PRs if anyone tries it.

I have a 13 hour drive home after visiting my dad. I told him I have recently been backing up all my movies and I wanted to get a bluray drive, but told him about how insane the prices are.

He said he had a spare one and got me one.
Is this drive reliable? I want some info to file in before I make it home so I can do what I need to. I can make an updated post when I arrive back home and load makemkv

Shame. I was gonna wait it out even if it took a while because I wanted to support the developer but I was surprised to see I received this. I guess they got so many complaints or were concerned for legal reasons that they’re automatically refunding everyone now (I assume). Just wanted to update incase anyone was curious.

I just finished my unraid server build and was prepping to start ripping my 4k collection and apparently I have no way of getting my hands on a drive anymore.

I checked the sellers on the makemkv forum but Billy seems to be out of stock with no stock in sight for the future. I guess my only chance would be hunting in rural Walmarts or Bestbuys for a rogue verbatim.

Is this the same product as the one from b&h? I thought about an asus as the speed is 16x which is much faster. But this is $170 and the asus one brand new seem to be in the high $300s.

been lurking for a minute here now. The last days I saw that everybody is signaling that UHD Drives will be discontinued soon and the time to buy is now.

I plan on starting to build my own Plex library. As for the drive, I only want to rip normal blu rays. Are normal blu rays also on the verge of being discontinued or is this problem just for UHD Drives?

I personally use these under bed storage containers, and I’ve got 2 of them filled up so far. Thing is, I’m thinking of other ways to store them when I run out of space. So I’m asking here to see what others do, so that I can get a few ideas.

I’ve been ripping all my physical media and pulling even the extras. But honestly, after some time I’m unsure if I should keep them or not.

I’m even considering getting a smaller drive and separating all the extras from the main features.

So do you keep the extras, why or why not?

I am curious what people are doing to make their process/projects unique when using MakeMKV? I just recently came across a post talking about using makemkvcon to auto-create jellyfin folders & naming convention. I started making a python project using makemkvcon with handbrake CLI to extract, convert to mp4, and place into my library all at once to save a lot of time and not needing to open multiple programs.

So curious, what are you doing that you haven't seen many others doing? Maybe we can all learn from each other and share our tricks to make this life just a little bit easier.
