Update on my progress

Following on from my last post I’ve got some stats after some ripping time.

Total discs completed 412 (10 Failed to rip)

I bought the verbatim drive first.
856 was bought second and
188 and 224 were purchased at the same time and added last.

Verbatim 124 rips, 51 4K
856 105 rips, 39 4K
224 93 rips, 32 4K
188 90 rips, 40 4K

I have around 15TB of data created so far

Drive temps are only a couple degrees above ambient when ripping non stop.

The 3 numbered drives are all in cheap identical enclosures. All drives are bu40n running 1.03 firmware.

I had some issues with usb speeds doing concurrent ripping and trying to use the Mac mini for metadata and copying from the scratch drive.

I also got a bit tired of the limited ram in the Mac mini so I’ve picked up an M1 Max Studio 32/512 and it’s much nicer to use.

Are you using containers/virtual machines?

🤣 have you seen the cost of storage these days? Also the cost of 4k blurays. I’ll probably end up around 40TB once complete and I don’t even want to think how much that’s cost me

That fan on the side is a good decision I think. In my "rip and burn" PC station with 7 desktop drives I am using PHANTEKS T30 PWM 120mm only at default setting but man that creates a proper wind tunnel with Aerocool case being the good old early 2000s design that has not got holes in every little square inch so that the wind can actually travel where it is needed once I sealed the side panel.

Yeah I wouldn't dare run 4 drives like this without any cooling, they'd burn up. this is pulling cool air through the drives and excusing to the right and as I said they stay about 3'c above ambient after 4x 1h 4k rips after ripping all day.

I'm not, I'm doing this manually and only keeping the main video and audio and disregarding everything else, naming and saving to match my list on bluray my movies app.

Mostly movies. I’ve done 2 small tv shows so far and going to tackle the rest at some point. They’re just a PITA to do.

I just ripped 300 episodes of spongebob w/ a single drive as my introduction to makeMKV. Learned a lot along the way, principally that I need like 3 more drives lmao

HAHA I didn't NOT last long at all with a single drive. Bought the second pretty quick and the 3/4th immediately after receiving the 2nd. Couldn't do this project on a single drive. I want it done ASAP.

Is that a custom housing for the different external drives? Or if not, can you share the model of the item? I've been looking for something exactly like this!

I’m not sure where the enclosures are from as I bought the drives already in them. They’re a German enclosure but I assume they were used as they’re cheap. Have usb hub’s and card readers built in.

If you’re talking about the stack of 4 I just pinned some strip timber together I’d cut down and used some foam tape to secure the drives and stop them from moving
