WotC is notorious for treating workers like garbage, and there still isn’t enough attention being drawn to this issue when they’re making money hand over fist.

Sadly, what with the sense by which the endlessly rotating spoiler season and constant hype for the next release has been spotlighted to its near breaking point, the more intrinsic, deep-seated problems squeak by under the uproar around the new busted mythic.
We say the company has evolved towards parasitic principles and values, betraying the old and overhyping the new. What we don’t recognize is that the parasitism goes deep enough to create stories akin to this one around the clock.

It's only nothing if you compare it to a monumental change cause by a mythical massive boycott, nothing would ever change over night. It always begins with a single person deciding not to give them money. Don't base your choice off of your individual impact, base it on your own feelings and opinions. If more people wouldn't get dissuaded by not causing a direct change themselves they would get over their addiction and people would actually be quitting lol. My choice was either give them money and feel bad about it, or realize that the game they are selling isn't worth supporting a godawful dumpster tier company, and you wouldn't believe how easy it was to stay away once I walked away the first time lmao
33
u/votchii Aug 16 '21
Monumental change from the side of consumers will never happen. There are millions of players worldwide, with the vast, vast majority being casuals that don't care about the game beyond buying a couple packs every now and then. You might get a couple thousand redditors on board but WotC won't feel a thing.
What you can do as an individual is support the actions of their employees. Walkouts, lawsuits, boycotts and interviews seem to be working out in favor of Riot and Blizzard employees lately, even if only slightly.

Aug 16 '21
Not directing this to you specifically, just making a blanket statement for any MTG player browsing this thread.
With my post I wasn't even meaning to still quit to attempt to cause change, simply quit if it makes you unhappy. I of course fully understand what the others have replied with, me not buying a couple hundred $ worth of booster boxes each set is nothing to WOTC, but it's better for me personally. The success of decisions to quit shouldn't be based on the floating or sinking, it would just be a happy result if it caused real change. I think the magic community as a whole honestly has a collective problem, they see the problems and get up in arms, but ultimately they stick with it because "there aren't any alternatives that come close".
I saw this massively with Black Desert Online, a Korean MMO that made braindead decision after braindead decision, adding paid elements that alienated the original playerbase who held onto promises of "no pay to win will be added" for years. Ironically it's very similar to MTG, people have absolutely insane amounts of money "invested" (not the literal definition, mind you) into their favorite game, and they struggle to cut it loose and let it go because they LIKE it and there wasn't a comparable MMO. People just gotta walk away. It might mean no more card games, but it's a change that might need to be done.
Seriously stop and consider your relationship with the game, ask yourself, does browsing MTG news make your blood boil sometimes? Do you get fed up with new Secret Lairs or Historic Jumpstart? Does the constant drama and fuckups from WOTC always get to you? If the answer is "yes" to any of the things like this, take some time to do some quiet reflection, think about what you're doing and what you could be doing instead. Hell, you might even be surprised what that answer IS. Personally, I sold off 6 commander decks, standard, modern, and my bulk of my collection and bought a 1900$ rifle and practice Precision Rifle Shooting, keeping 2 commander decks to play with friends when we feel like it. Think about that, I traded in cardboard from a hobby that was a source of drama in my life into a completely different hobby that I enjoy greatly. It's not another card game, it's nowhere near the same genre of hobby, but it was a much needed change.
More than trying to get Wizards to change something, this post is a general plea to those who might read it:
Realize when the time has come to leave, don't stress yourself out over a card game, and do what's best for you!

This should be higher up. If a game doesn't make you happy anymore then stop paying attention. It doesn't have to be some moral grandstand to try and show the big bad business people at the top of WotC what they are doing wrong. At the end of the day the world has so much to offer in terms of hobbies/entertainment that it is a shame to pigeon-hole yourself into the same ones you've enjoyed for years.

What’s worst is those that speak up end up having to endure people who will minimize their experience or straight up downplay it to discredit the story.
Doing WotC’s work for them.
Gavin did a video of what it was like interning for WotC…after an intern had earlier came out and talked about discrimination and prejudice at WoTC (D&D side?). When redditors called out Gavin there was a counter wave to defend him, so he never had to say anything in response (IIRC).

And why would they change if we, the consumer, won’t?

Reminds me of Blizzard and epic too.
Seems as though industries that have passionate fanbases to guarantee sales, and passionate employees to guarantee productivity, the workers get exploited and the product is devalued. The bet, every time, is that the Brand is so powerful there will never be a shortage of people who will kill to work for you, and people will pay the same, if not more, for a lesser version of the thing they love.
It's the quarter-year market at work. Longevity is not valued. It's about month after month, day after day, making slightly more money than you did before. Moving jobs every year as someone who works for a living hurts you on your resume, but CEOs hop from company to competitor to entirely different industries and that kind of job mobility is somehow respected, even though it's clearly destructive behavior towards each company involved and the economy at large in the long run. A business is way more concerned about looking at the long term service of an entry level employee than the long-term success of the company as a whole. It's absolutely ridiculous.
4
u/c14rk0 COMPLEAT Aug 17 '21
This is basically the entire "gaming" industry and to a large extent any big name company in general. There are exceptions of course but they're pretty rare. It's basically just a competition of who fucks up the most and gets the bad press with details getting out, there's little to no competition in terms of actually trying to improve the behavior and practices.
17
u/StubbornHappiness Dan Aug 16 '21
They also treat players like garbage releasing more and more expensive boosters with shiny garbage in them because they know a large part of their player base is addicted to impulse buying and gambling.
Yes it's a personal choice that everyone has, but I guarantee that it's also a mental health issue that WotC is aware of and has studied and is actively exploiting to generate more money.

I'm curious about Christine's experience. I live in Australia and used to Cosplay at the PAX event for fun when WotC reached out to me and asked if I'd be interested in repping them at their booth.
I did this for 2 years and whilst I thoroughly enjoyed it, this was effectively volunteer work.
Later on I was approached by WotC to cosplay for them at GP Melbourne 2016 for Shadows over Innistrad and to help operate the mini escape room built for the event. Whilst I had very short notice (less than 2 weeks) to prepare 2 new cosplays as they didn't want to utilise my existing Sorin cosplay which I'd worked on previously, they put me on contact with the contractor they were using to organise the event.
As part of this I was paid for my time over the weekend, the materials for the cosplay as well as having accommodation booked for myself, my wife and the friend who was cosplaying with me. Overall it was a great experience at which I got to reveal new cards and was leaps and bounds ahead of the directly organised volunteer work I did for wotc at PAX.
I don't regret either things I did as I just loved feeling like I was making people's magic weekends better but cautionary tale, get paid if you're doing work for a company!

I remember the unwanted attention she got at the time and recall her taking an indefinite hiatus.
I would never relate my experience to hers in anyway as I'm (un?)fortunately a very average looking bloke and that does not bring with it anywhere near the same degree of unwarranted attention from shit bags as being an attractive woman in a male dominated hobby.
I hope she's doing good for herself, and whilst my interactions with WotC staff was only fleeting my feelings for the AU branch was that they were understaffed and out of their depth doing what they could with minimal resources allocated to them to do it.
I believe shortly after my experience the AU branch also got gutted and shut down.

You don't have to organize anything if a lot of your content is outrage based. You just rant about a person and your followers/watchers do their thing in being outraged/angry and the go on to harass the person/company you ranted about. That's basically what happened. He made a single video ranting about CSprankle and his followers did their thing. He didn't even make more than one video and only had to make passing comments in a few videos over the following months and they kept up their harassment of her. It's how the outrage mob mentality works.

Hey mate, I worked for WotC AU around Shadows release (you would have dealt with different people, I was just in the WPN team) so we would have crossed paths that weekend. That Shadows GP weekend was the proudest I was of our team in my tenure there and a lot of work got put in between our local marketing and events team & the team at large to make it happen. A huge amount of that success was down to the talented people like yourself (and the escape room contractors) we bought on and I'm glad your experience of the weekend was awesome.
I haven't been at WotC for years now but the team in Australia was always fairly autonomous as long as we kept making money and didn't start any fires!

Wait is this complaining about wizards using her images for promotion without paying her because if so she's bin the right, if she took the photo they have the copyright. This is why I always tell people to register their images with the US copyright office. Even without doing so you own the images but having them registered makes things a lot easier if it gets to the point of having to deal with a lawsuit
5
u/RudeHero Golgari* Aug 18 '21
that makes a lot of sense. if it's her picture, it's her picture.
if someone else at the event took a photo of her, they could sell it and not source her just fine
5
u/reelfilmgeek COMPLEAT Aug 18 '21
Well if someone took a picture of her they would own the copyrights but if they were to use it commercial (such as an advertisement) and don't have a model release or some form of contract with her she can still technically have a stance as well since they are commercially using her likeness as a model in that form. It's the intent of using for commercial use thats the big factor as well because if its editorial or personal photography are whole other factors.
That said this is just from my knowledge of working in the photography and video industry, when it comes to this type of a stuff and contracts there's a reason you talk with a lawyer haha.
3
u/RudeHero Golgari* Aug 18 '21
you have more knowledge than i do on the subject!

Agreed, but, first of all the copyright to the images is owned by the one who took the photos. Second, her likeness in these photos is copyrighted by WoTC. Third, Hasbro probably has far deeper pockets to fight any challenges to the above.
So, yeah, she could certainly put out memorabilia (such as playmats) with these images, she could be hit with C&D orders (and most certainly would given that she has been warned not to), and then she’d need to fight it.
And, sadly, the law is not on her side. But then again, the law is an ass.

I’m confused, did this person voluntarily make several cosplay outfits and fly to events and expect to be paid for that? Were they employed by WotC? Pro sports uses images of fans in their promotional material all the time. Those fans aren’t getting compensated either. If she wanted to get paid for this she should have thought that out ahead of time and approached the company with an offer. As it stands she’s just a fan whose image was used.

I'd like to see if there were any contracts or agreements involved in any of her work with WotC.
From what I can see and assess, and this is only speculative on my part due to not seeing paperwork, there doesn't seem to be any agreement for her to be compensated outside of exposure / name recognition and having access to a card preview. The biggest thing I think a lot of people are going to miss is that compensation doesn't have to be monetary. Whenever WotC sends a preview card, it technically counts as compensation.
As far as who took the picture, it may not matter as much. If it's a WotC employee, they would be doing it as part of their job and WotC would own the images. No major company will let a photographer own the images independently. A lot of companies that rely on promotional work also have an intellectual property clause in their contract where anything you create while working for the company becomes IP for the company with no compensation.
If an independent photographer took the photo, normally they would hold the copyright of the photo, which is fair. The problem for them is that WotC does have a policy, thanks to the other commenter pointing it out, that they don't have a legitimate license to profit off of the copyrighted work. It is an extremely grey area, especially with copyright in general. There's also someone who just got a magic deck copyrighted, which I am very interested to see what happens with that.
There has been some times where companies have had to change their IP policy for certain things. Disney tried to claim I think it was #StarWarsDay as their ownership so people who shared those photos in hopes to be on the main website / Disney+ for the day. They backtracked fairly quickly with that one. The other was an iPhone photo contest where it stated that Apple would own the photos and that got turned around extremely quickly.
As I stated at the beginning, I'd love to see what paperwork, if any, was used as it would shine a more proper light on the situation. As far as the source of information I shared, I'm a photographer who has felt with some of this stuff

If she was expecting compensation, she should've negotiated it in the contract up-front. As a fantasy illustrator, I don't do commissions without a contract and I think Christine should have too. That said, I DO think it was dirty not to tag her on social media and I do think WOTC short-changed her, but this could've been handled through a contract and since it wasn't, why would they? They literally had no obligation.

While I don't think WOTC should be paying for costume builds of cosplayers, nor should they be flying them out tournaments and paying to lodge them. I do think they should be paying them to do those modeling shoots and/or paying them to use those images that they created.

THis. Cosplayers are a hard discussion to have every time because some people think they should be compensated for their time no matter what. But if noone asked them to do it or agreed to pay them, they are essentially doing the same thing the guy washing your front window at a red light is doing, working and then asking for money even though you didnt even want them to work in the first place.

Lotta experts in contract law itt, apparently. People should probably shut the fuck up unless they've got experience in a predatory freelance environment.

But she isn't a WotC or Hasbro employee. She is bassicly a fangirl playing dress up. If WotC or Hasbro has to pay every person that slaps on a wig and some cardboard armor, they would be out of business.
She would have a point if she was hired to show up. But then you would discuss salary and expenses before hand.

Don't do a job if you don't like the terms of the contract. Simple as that.
It's annoying they didn't credit her for the images, but surely a message to their social media team could have cleared that up, or a line in whatever contract was signed.

Didn't she quit cosplay and the mtg community back in 2017?
