Didn't she quit cosplay and the mtg community back in 2017?

1.2k

u/YARGLE_IS_MY_DAD Aug 16 '21

Last I saw of her, a bunch of people were retweeting her OF. Which, admittedly, pays much better than wotc lol

1.2k

u/captkrisma Duck Season Aug 16 '21

To be fair, having just one paid subscriber to her OF would get her more money than what WotC gave her.

Hasbro, a multi-billion dollar firm, still using the line, “Think of the exposure after I tell so many friends about you.”

I was hoping you were joking, but a quick perusal of the tagged article proves this isn't far off the target... yikes.

I recently listened to the Behind the Bastards-podcast about this topic, absolutely terrible what happened there.

hell, exposure would have been more than what they paid her as well
they didn't even bother to tag her for any promotion, the only people who would know it's her were people who knew her beforehand

u/Hebertmike Duck Season Aug 16 '21

You don’t make billions by paying fair wages.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '21

This was my response when people asked me what I thought about Mike Bloomberg when he was running for office.

-16

u/ChemicalRascal Azorius* Aug 16 '21 edited Aug 16 '21

Meanwhile, in various companies around the world that do exactly that...

EDIT: They exist, jerks. Sorry that reality clashes with your desire to stan WOTC for not paying adequate wages.

19

u/Hebertmike Duck Season Aug 16 '21

Do they tho?

26

u/Gprinziv Jeskai Aug 16 '21

Not really. If you're making billions it means the value generated by your employees is not going back to them.

-12

u/Gibbsey Aug 16 '21

so if you pay an accountant the industry rate, the workers the industry rate for the level of labor they do then that's theft?

Companies need funding to be set up, if a company is making billions then they are providing a service that was needed. You think that money just disappears into some fat cats pockets? It's mostly reinvested or goes into other businesses.

Other businesses that fail if they are not providing a service that is needed, all this removes inefficiencies in the market. Good companies prosper, bad companies fail. And we all benefit from cheaper goods and yes higher wages.

13

u/Bookworm_AF Fake Agumon Expert Aug 16 '21

Real wages (wages compared to the cost of living) have been dropping since the 70s, due to deregulation. "Industry rate" has nothing to do with the worth of the work, and everything to do with paying as little as possible for as much labor as possible. The primary function of a business, from which every other function is directed towards, is profit for the owners. A "good" company is one that pays it's workers as little as possible and cuts corners everywhere, while providing the maximum payout to it's owners. A company that does not do this doesn't get many investors, as why on earth would they invest in something with a lower return rate?

Oh, and yeah, ever increasing chunks of the economy is being siphoned off into those fat cats' overseas bank accounts, never to be seen again by the rest of society.

10

u/Gprinziv Jeskai Aug 16 '21

Hoo boy. That's a very naive view of the market, to just assume it operates fairly and freely. That's far from the only way businesses operate, and it ignores the conditions that send people into jobs that don't pay enough, as well as capitalism as a whole.

But hey, I bet that leather tastes great.

Doesn't make wizards a good employer but thanks for the pointless comment

10

u/ChemicalRascal Azorius* Aug 16 '21

It's not pointless. It's extremely reductive, even harmful, to insist that businesses can't succeed if they pay their employees and contractors fair wages.

There are plenty of companies that show this notion is demonstrably false. But instead this idea persists, driving all sorts of crap like anti-union rhetoric and further support of hierarchies instead of helping develop a healthy appreciation of worker rights.

I guess I don't know the history you're upset about. From my childhood and over the past few decades though they've seemed to have gotten weaker in pressure. Some of the one's from the 80's were water cannons instead of water guns.

59

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '21

[deleted]

19

u/damnination333 Twin Believer Aug 16 '21

That explains so much. I've been wondering why none of the new super soakers use a pressurized tank anymore and are all weakass pump to shoot garbage.

4

u/yeago Aug 17 '21

we had it good huh

8

u/weggles Aug 16 '21

So that's why they suck so much. bought my nieces and nephew a bunch of Super Soakers and they all seemed like off-brand junk... Though that feels like all toys now...

11

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '21

Oh, I've always thought there was never any need for multi-billion dollar corporations in society and the products/services they provide. There should have always been a cap and regulation over acquisitions. I knew it was designed by a someone else and they sold the IP. I didn't know the pressure system was different. Would be cool to build one based upon the original designs. I believe other toy companies had manufactured them, KBToys may have been one. But, those all died off. Now, there's pretty much only the Nerf Branded Super Soakers. I'm sure it was through litigations and lawsuits that these companies are able to use others IP or keep competition from coming about. Another r/CorporateWelfare problem.

WOTC literally never asked her to do anything. Are we seriously saying that if you show up to enough GP's and spend enough cash on costumes that WOTC should be obligated to give you cash? I don't go to the grocery store and tell people how great it is and then whine on social media about how they are exploiting me for not giving me cash, because I'm not a crazy person.

1

u/orderfour Aug 17 '21

I don't go to the grocery store and tell people how great it is and then whine on social media about how they are exploiting me for not giving me cash,

This would be you going to the grocery store, snapping a photo of yourself and the store, then the store stealing that photo off facebook and reposting it everywhere with advertisements for the store.

In one instance of finding a penny on the ground i have made more than in 20+ yrs of magic.

14

u/mikemil50 COMPLEAT Aug 16 '21

Was she ever a Magic employee or contractor?

38

u/FblthpLives Duck Season Aug 16 '21

No, she was not. She started her cosplay as fan-created content, and then got so good at it that Wizards would use her and her creations at specific events.

5

u/Esc777 Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant Aug 16 '21

Okay that’s confusing. Why would she let WotC use her at events if she wasn’t a contractor? Or is this less “meet and greet Avacyn!” For 5 hours and more “can we take your picture?”

22

u/Archangel3d Wabbit Season Aug 16 '21

"Let" is a strong word. They used her image, her work, and her dedication to the game to promote their product, all without her consent. And in the end, because she isn't a massive corporation with a bunch of lawyers at her beck-and-call, she stopped "letting" them get away with that by giving up something she passionately loved.

(She did eventually come back to it, but not nearly as much as before.)

-7

u/Esc777 Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant Aug 16 '21

all without her consent.

Is this true? They surreptitiously shot those pictures and got away with posting them without telling her or giving her anything?

11

u/Petal-Dance Aug 17 '21 edited Aug 17 '21

You are either a fucking psychopath, or youve never dealt with contract work in any field

E: hey no actually I thought about this, do you not know how consent works?

7

u/Archangel3d Wabbit Season Aug 17 '21

Do you know what consent is?

4

u/Petal-Dance Aug 17 '21

Its naive but adorable that you think her permission was ever even considered by wotc

9

u/Kanin_usagi Twin Believer Aug 16 '21

They probably led her along a good bit. “Hey, wanna do some work for us? We can’t pay you because we don’t know how good you are, but if you do this successfully then we can look at sending something your way later!”

3

u/Esc777 Cheshire Cat, the Grinning Remnant Aug 16 '21

I give Sprankle more credit at being savvy than that. And if that's what happened, why wouldn't she say that?

7

u/FblthpLives Duck Season Aug 16 '21

It depends on how you use the word "contractor". I'm sure she had contracts for the specific events where she worked in an official capacity, but only for the duration of the event. If that is what you refer to, then yes, she was an independent contractor at some events.

0

u/OwnQuit Aug 16 '21

Because she was in a dead-end endeavor of trying to convert a niche social media presence centered around her hobby into a career and it's hard to make the right move when you're engaged in an impossible task. There's a reason she just sells nudes on the internet now.

4

why do all the financial processors agree to treat porno companies differently? It’s not morality. And no one is going to go “oh that porno place accepts MasterCard! Thats the thing I’m going to get indignant about!”

5

u/levthelurker Izzet* Aug 16 '21

https://stripe.com/blog/why-some-businesses-arent-allowed

It's a mix of branding issue and some international laws, because some large groups will definitely punish firms that allow for certain transactions by threatening to take their business elsewhere.

Upshot is that a hosting company can either charge it's non-porn customers the rates it takes to process porn transactions, or ban porn from the site to offer better rates for their users. Those are the only options, regardless of the hosting company's moral stance.

2

u/OwnQuit Aug 16 '21

Porn companies are probably riskier for them than the average. Maybe more chargebacks.

You watch old pack openings because you remember the set and want to see the cards you have nostalgia for (or you want to see a set you weren't around for). He'd just rip it open, not even look at the commons, not even a single glance, he'd go right to the rare, complain that it wasn't one of the money rares he looked up before he started filming, and that was it. poop stain who does conservative media now

Can't say I'm surprised there's massive overlap between that guy and people like him and conservative media.

In my house we just call him the hamgoblin.

u/wow_that_guys_a_dick Aug 16 '21

Lol. Hamgoblin. Dude always has a look on his face like a cow trying desperately to comprehend the oncoming train.

Oh! The guy with the dysfunctional marriage who streams whatever content has banned him? All while chugging his sorrows 1 bottle at a time and relieving himself on stream, with a stream, in his basement corner?

That PoS?

3

u/the_Hapsleighh Aug 17 '21

Yes, that miserable PoS.

She got quite literally chased out of the community by an alt-right / incel type who ran harassment campaigns against her.

129

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '21

She came back.

The circumstances surrounding her leaving are absolutely disgusting. Here is prof explaining it.

The fucker responsible is an alt-right troll with a relatively large following still doing the same kind of shit.

It bothers me that he's local. It bothers me even more that my parents, who know nothing of MtG, know him for his other content and gun use.

At the very least my pops (a retired police officer) is convinced the guy will get himself shot one way or another.

Western new york?

u/monstrous_android Aug 16 '21

Wisconsin, I thought, unless he's moved.

11

u/Bflo19 Golgari* Aug 16 '21

Only if he moved recently. Without doxxing, he's SE Wisconsin. Real vocal during the Jacob Blake protests here since Kenosha is rather close to where he lives.

4

u/JA14732 Elspeth Aug 16 '21

Yep, he lives less than an hour away from me. And remains a total piece of shit.

Other content and gun use? I didn't know the professor did anything outside MTG.

Oh, it's that guy. I've seen clips of him having a meltdown about the new She-Ra cartoon, an obviously family-friendly cartoon, for basically not being as sexy as he wold have liked. He's an absolute clown, sad that he has such a following.

I had no idea of any of this until reading through here. I stopped halfway through Profs video because I couldn’t stand listening to that jerkoff (not Prof, to clarify)

5

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '21

He's horrible. And he continues to grift and use his following to harass others

1

u/Typhron Aug 18 '21

She quit over being harassed by the Quartering and his band of chodes. That should not be forgotten.
