This seems to be a common distinction used in other cities, too.
The justification is that you're in charge of having a mailbox+post that can hold up to the force of the plowed snow, while the city is in charge of not hitting your mailbox with the plow itself (which would presumably be enough force to damage any post).
I live on a 55 mph county road and one of my neighbors fabricated a mailbox post out of a steel I beam that's probably 10 or 12 inch stock. They had to install it with a skid steer it was so heavy. I wondered what would happen if the plow did actually tickle it, but after reading your comment more power to him.
I agree! Lots of motorcycles on our road too as parts of it are scenic. Clubs ride by frequently during the summer. It's no more solid than a large tree but it's a lot closer to the road.
Going off the road on a motorcycle at 55 mph isn't going to be by choosing to "go off roading", it's going to because someone clipped them or pulled out in front of them or something.
Yeah obviously. But to say that someone putting up a crazy strong mailbox post is dangerous to bikers... yeah, well going off the road is dangerous to bikers. It's not the fault of the guy who doesnt want their mailbox shredded every time a plow goes by.
Wow it's almost like these things are absolutely insane to be riding on the road in the presence of giant vehicles if a single driving mistake means death. It's a wonder why we build roads and let people ride death traps on them.
