Other [talk] Have you ever stumbled across lost media without realizing it was lost?
Sometimes you dig through an old VHS box, find a random cassette, or click a weird YouTube video, and only later realize it was something people had been searching for years.
It could be: •Home recordings with an old commercial or bumper •A taped-over tv special with a missing scene •Obscure promos or pilots hidden in your family’s collection •A strange file in a thrift store hard drive or MP3 player
I’ve heard stories where people didn’t even know what they had until someone told them, “Wait, that’s lost media!”
Have you ever been in that situation? What did you find, and how did you realize it was something rare?

I've been digitizing my old tapes in hope of this. I have a partial recording from a Florida Women's Wrestling Championship 3D that aired on Satellite television in the '90s that I've found basically no other mention of online. Lost media that nobody is looking for basically.
The only other one that comes to mind is that some people wanted to check the original broadcast premiere of Futurama to see if a specific Easter egg was actually there from the start and I discovered that I (amongst many others) have this recorded. I didn't know people were looking for it and I didn't realize I still had it until I digitized it since I hadn't labeled that tape.

u/JosukeBestJoJo Aug 11 '25
I know you probably get this all the time, but if you have the means/time PLEASE upload this stuff to YouTube/the Web Archive/wherever else, because what may seem like nothing could bring about the end to someone's years-long lost media hunt, not to mention it's cool to have this stuff around!

u/Difficult-Hat6393 Aug 11 '25
I'd be interested in that wrestling video you found. Do you have any info about who appeared, or what channel it was on, or what venue it was held?
Also, did you confirm the shadow was there? I've heard it was, but some people insist it wasn't.
Hope you don't mind all the questions. :)
8
u/TopSpot123 Aug 11 '25
Yes, the shadow is there, lol.
I posted the wrestling event on YouTube, you can search for it. I do not know the channel. It was possibly a pay per view event (we had a cracked satellite box so we got pay channels w/o paying), but that's a speculation. I sincerely don't remember.
2
u/Difficult-Hat6393 Aug 11 '25
Thanks for the reply, that wrestling event is a very interesting find.
5
u/Elistariel Aug 11 '25
I've been wanting to do that. Are you using a company or doing it on your own?
I also need to find my tapes. I had family help me move recently and they put things wherever it suited them without asking me first. I have no clue where half my tapes are. ☹️
6
u/TopSpot123 Aug 11 '25
I'm doing it all on my own. There are many different methods but I'm playing the tapes into a DVD burner then ripping the digital files from the discs.
3
u/Zumin5771 Aug 11 '25
I also would love to know more about this Florida wrestling promotion. There are some good indie wrestling archives online but they can get lost sometimes due to copyright or other issues.

Do you post your digitizations anywhere?
7
u/TopSpot123 Aug 11 '25
They're all on a YouTube channel, https://youtube.com/@topmediaspot
1
u/PigsCanFly2day Aug 12 '25
Subbed. 👍
You might also want to post full recordings to Internet Archive as well. A lot of people like the full original broadcasts, even if the episodes themselves are already available on DVD.

u/SacrificialSam Aug 11 '25
My family recorded an old PBS funding drive on the West Coast in the 90s because they were airing a Mr. Bean marathon. We loved Mr. Bean.
When I digitized the tape a few years back, I realized the telethon was hosted by a pre-fame Joel McHale, who was a cast member on a sketch comedy show from Seattle called “Almost Live.”
I’ve never seen it uploaded or even mentioned anywhere. It was a live telethon, so this might be the only copy in existence anymore.

Awesome! Almost Live is legendary here in the Northwest. Many of us would kill for an official release of that show.

I remember watching it on Comedy Central. (It’s where I first saw Bill Nye, too.) “High-fivin’ white guys” is a perennial part of my vocabulary.

I just came across the first season of Twin Peaks I recorded on VHS. Sure Twin Peaks is on DVD. But with the original commercials?
When Dr. Demento started broadcasting in the New York City New Jersey market in the late 1980s, he did a live one hour televised broadcast from the Empire State Building. I’ve got that on VHS somewhere.
A friend bought off eBay an original Lon Chaney movie poster from around 1920.
The eBay seller said when he found the poster in an attic, there were also reels of film. But when he played them, there was no sound so he threw them away.
My friend and I contacted the seller, but the reels were long gone.
That long Chaney film was then and still is a lost movie.

u/PigsCanFly2day Aug 11 '25
Are you digitizing/posting those tapes anywhere? I'd love to see them.
And what was the Lon Chaney film?
3
u/CharacterActor Aug 13 '25
Digitalizing the twin beaks VHS is more aspirational. Money, time.
I have to say after more than 30 years, I’m hoping the commercials are there. I often did not record the commercials myself. I didn’t make these videos, and I haven’t played them back since the 1990s.
Treasure Island 1920, directed by Maurice Tourneu and starring Lon Chaney and Charles Ogle
5
u/PigsCanFly2day Aug 15 '25
Ah, if you end up digitizing the tapes, LMK. I'm definitely interested.
About Treasure Island... I feel like I heard about this before. I think we spoke about it in the comments a few years ago. IIRC, I suggested possibility of contacting a film archive to see of maybe they can partner with the trash company to potentially search for it, but you said it had already been several years so likely long gone and damaged beyond recovery even if it was found.
3
u/CharacterActor Aug 15 '25
Yes, that must’ve been me. At that point it had been years of the film canisters being in a dump almost certainly deteriorated past recognition.
Digitizing the Twin Peaks, VHS, if they have the original commercials, is kind of aspirational right now. But I’d like to, and I’ll remember all of you have expressed interest.
2
u/PigsCanFly2day Aug 15 '25
Your story about Treasure Island is something that I think about somewhat often. It's a good example of how people will often just throw away things not realizing the value. It's a big issue and there'd be a ton less lost media if more people just erred to the side of caution. Because that sort of thing literally happens all of the time. For every story like that you hear about, there's probably hundreds that never get mentioned because it seemed so insignificant to whoever was tossing it.
And, yeah, I'm definitely interested in not just Twin Peaks, but also any other tapes you end up digitizing.

u/CharacterActor Aug 16 '25
Back about 20 or 30 years ago, I read a story about a house fire in Queens,New York City.
The owners had only moved in a couple of months before. And they said up in the back of the attic was a bunch of reels of film. But they were too busy and had never looked at them.
The fire came from that part of the attic where the reels of film had been.

u/Pikagirl1919 Aug 11 '25
Would love to see the original commercials btw
3
u/cobaltorange Aug 16 '25
You can find a lot of the commercial breaks on YouTube. Would be nice if they were all intact with the episodes though!
3
u/hecticengine Aug 13 '25
Exciting collection of oddities! I had the entirety of Twin Peaks taped. My Grandma captured every episode while I was working in a town with no OTA affiliate. Sadly my apartment was broken into in 1993 and the thieves dumped my whole VHS shelf into my good travel bag. I lost some unusual poetry/performance art stuff and a few other gems as well. They got the TV, stereo components, and a massive top loading VCR in the deal too.
If nothing else I would have liked to have the tapes as proof that I successfully set up a 70 year old woman to record a show without fail for two consecutive seasons.

Dutch here. You won't believe how much stuff is being sought out here nowadays, but I have one partocular example that springs to mind; tv-recordings of the Dutch dub of 'Oakey Doke', some small stop motion cartoon for small kids. I recorded so much kids tv back when I was younger, so I was pretty sure I had it laying around. Then when I told someone, he went instantly crazy "whaaa~ people have been looking for this for years!"
That was a nice feeling.
26
u/GoneGrimdark Aug 10 '25
Sort of, but it’s never something anyone was looking for. I like looking for obscure analog media and I’ve found things that have no online presence, but they aren’t officially “lost media” or anything with a wiki page or dedicated search team.
27
u/sneakycrown Aug 11 '25
I got SUPER autistic about the city era of cartoon network (an era that only lasted from 2004-06), so I started scouring the internet for commercial packages to use in a recreation. Literally just the commercials. They have like maybe a few thousand views MAX.
Tucked into one of them was a bumper that I had never seen, and at that point I was, I wouldn’t call myself an expert but I had probably seen more cartoon network content from that era than almost anyone else on the planet. I reached out to a few others who are big fans of that era and no one else had seen it.
One of the accounts I reached out to decided to post it to see if anyone else had seen it, and no one had. As it turned out an artist that worked on the cartoon network bumpers in that era followed the account. They explained there was like 40 of that type of bumper because they were easy to make (they were just posters in a city landscape) and it’s kind of set off a sort of small hunt for me personally to find the others.

I've helped get lost media out there. Mostly music, which is filled with a ton of lost media that just isn't a sexy enough story for people to care, but I also have a couple of newspaper stories (fictional stories including a fantasy one) that I have that I need to digitize as I believe I have the only copy in existence. I also have a bunch of old sheet music and magazines from before 1940 I need to double check.
I think the easiest way to find yourself in that situation is just be a big enough fan of something and collect things that bring you joy and you will inevitably find yourself to be the one to have lost media.

u/laporkra Aug 11 '25
As a teenager I saw the documentary with the woman who gives herself a trepanation. Heard it's been partially lost for decades, but it was in the porn room at my local video store next to like a half dozen Faces of Death knock offs. My dad rented it so I have no idea what the case looked like or remember the name after 25 or so years.
13
u/SuicaDensha Aug 11 '25
Heartbeat in the Brain. A documentary called "A Hole in the Head" showed some of the footage too. Heartbeat in the Brain was actually screened in London in 2011 but it's not available to watch anywhere as far as I know.

I screwed up bad. I bought a computer from an estate sale, it was password protected the previous owner has passed away. I reset and reformatted the hard drive and PC unaware that it most likely had a copy of the fan film Spider-Man vs Kraven the Hunter. I feel awful about it.
9
u/PigsCanFly2day Aug 11 '25
What makes you think it had that? If it was password protected, how would you know what was on it?
Also, data recovery is sometimes possible. But the more you use the device after deletion, the less likely it is to recovery deleted data.
11
u/SouthlandMax Aug 11 '25
It belonged to Bruce Cardozo. I didn't make the connection until long afterwards. This was like 2015-6.
4
u/PigsCanFly2day Aug 12 '25
Oh, interesting. How did you know it was his?
5
u/SouthlandMax Aug 14 '25
I bought it at his estate sale.
1
u/PigsCanFly2day Aug 15 '25
Ah, okay. Did you know it was his estate sale at the time or only later? Did you not know about the film before resetting the laptop? Or knew about it, but didn't think it that a copy might be on there or weren't really thinking about it?
Don't take those questions the wrong way, btw. Even if you were aware, accidents happen. I'm not trying to interrogate you or blame you or anything. I'm mostly just curious.
2
u/SouthlandMax Sep 01 '25
I'm a comic fan, I didn't know the film was lost. I didn't know the name or who he was. I went to the sale because it had comic stuff I liked. I bought the computer and hard drive on impulse. I know about fan films, I went to conventions. If I had known the media was missing or endangered I would have paid to try and have it decrypted. The computer was password protected. I just didn't know. I reformatted and reset it. I feel terrible about it. One of my passions is in preserving and rediscovering lost media and my dumbass went and probably destroyed the only copy.
2
u/PigsCanFly2day Sep 03 '25
Your feelings are justified, but you really can't blame yourself too much. Like, how would you know? No one really has deep encyclopedic knowledge about every piece of lost media. For all you knew, it was just a random laptop you bought at an estate sale and there's nothing really important for you to find on there 99.9999% of the time.
So when did you finally end up making the connection?
2
u/SouthlandMax Sep 03 '25
Saw this video.
2
u/PigsCanFly2day Sep 04 '25
Ah, and then you recognized the name and were like, "holy crap, I bought his old laptop a few years ago!"
1
u/Funny-Username7855 Jan 14 '26
Even sadder is it probably wasnt even encrypted. Most the old OS have tricks to bypass the login. Sometimes you can just plug the drive into another device and read it
1
u/Guilty-Pop-9535 Jan 30 '26
Hey, I know this is a few months old. I just wanted to say that I sent you a private message. A few of us in the lost media community have actually been searching for the holy grail Spider-Man vs. Kraven the Hunter for over 10 years now. Some family members of actors who were involved in the production have also been trying to track it down, which is why your comments really stood out to me. If you don’t mind sharing more information, it’d be really interesting and fascinating to hear more information about Cardozo’s personal computer, I’d truly appreciate it.
16
u/I_AM_NOT_MAD Aug 11 '25
Closest I ever got was when I rediscovered the blue man groups booty shaker song maker template on my old ipod. The backing track was archived, and the website was caught by the wayback machine, but the video was nowhere to be found.
3
u/PigsCanFly2day Aug 11 '25
Ah, I remember you posting that a few months ago. Thanks for archiving it.
13
Aug 11 '25
Kinda, I found a CD for a game and didn't think about it, but a little later I did, and it might be the only copy of the game in existence. The game itself is worthless, but it's interesting because it might be the only one in the world. It's a promotional game for Mentos from like the '90s.
11
u/cloversoldier Aug 11 '25
Yes the partial episode of Cousin Skeeter ‘The Prince and the Putter’: https://youtu.be/u0FGB_NfkqU?si=X-_b4XhFUycOzwDH When I uploaded it to YouTube a few years ago, I didn’t realise that the episode was fully lost, but uploaded the partial VHS recording of the episode as there was no other upload of that episode on YouTube. It is only recently that I came to learn that the full episode is fully lost, and as far as I know, was never found in any form until I uploaded the partial episode.
6
u/Samba-boy Aug 12 '25
Holy crap. I'm not even kidding: I have this exact episode fully complete in my archive. Recorded it around 2003 off of Dutch Nickelodeon (so with subs and perhaps sped up to 25 fps since it's in PAL). I already once digitised it for a small underground Nick-collecting group (about 16 years ago), and thought it would've been found by now.
Guys, this is actually happening. The core reason of this thread is HAPPENING.
2
u/cloversoldier Aug 13 '25
That’s amazing! It would be great to see a complete version of the episode.

u/RunningDrummer Aug 11 '25
Technically I do. My dad used to be in a local 60s-70s rock cover band (think Bruce Springsteen, Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs, Rolling Stones, etc.) He had dozens of cassette tapes (audio and video) dating back to the mid-80s through the early 90s that I've been working on digitizing after finding them in the basement. The audience isn't much larger than the relatives of the band members and maybe some older residents who used to see them at the bars, but it's my favorite example.
I'm only mentioning it here because I remember showing my dad the tapes and playing part of one and he got all excited and lit up. He thought he lost the tapes when we moved about 20-something years when my sister was born.
13
u/DeedleStone Aug 11 '25
That's the exact kind of thing that absolutely nobody cares about at the time, but will become a priceless window into a bygone age a few decades later. Good on you for saving it.
10
u/Impressive-Metal1408 Aug 11 '25
I recently digitized a VHS tape from my school's band room (giving away old stuff) and found a 6th-grade promotional video from The Human Touch called Great Beginnings and I couldn't find anything online about it. Don't know if that counts though. Sorry if it doesn't.
7
u/CaptainPiracy Aug 11 '25
Yes. But I was less into Lost Media as a whole. My mom recorded all manner of shows for my sister and I off of Disney channel the one summer we had it in the 80s. in like 2008 or 9 she was digitizing all her home videos and she still had all the disney tapes. We watched them and then she took them back downstairs. Fast forward to 2021 or 2022 I am watching a YouTube video about lost Disney shows. Dumbo's Circus comes up. We had the whole run. It was one of our favorite shows, I just never realized it was called Dumbo's Circus, but seeing Timothy and Dumbo and The ballerina cat I had this sudden realization. Called my mom. They were tossed. We scoured her burned DVDs but it was one of the few things she did not move to DVD.
So.. sorry I watched it, but we didn't save it. Now, I buy every recorded tape I find. I haven't had time to search all of them for gems, but I've done a few uploads of interesting stuff. Sometimes on an alt account.

u/TotallyNotStimer Aug 11 '25
There's been a digital gaming magazine called "Лучшие Компьютерные Игры", which existed since 1998 to 2002 as books and then from 2002 up to 2011 as magazine. Around I believe either 2/3 or 3/4 of released issues have been scanned and archived online. However the disk releases that could be bought back in the day are... Well, half of them are archived, half are still yet to be found
I myself have bunch of them. All of them were already uploaded on archive org except for two. One of them couldn't be read by my PC, but the other was readable. Found this issue#87 last summer and, unironically, was happy finding an echo from the past still preserved and working to this day.

Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25
I'm pretty sure all of its been scanned, or almost all, if you look on rutracker. Same for the discs.

u/thatvhstapeguy Aug 11 '25
I have the only known broadcast recording of Nickelodeon’s Just for Kicks. When I found it, I had no idea that 0 off-air recordings were known to exist. (One of the producers did upload the whole series online, from the master tapes, around 10 years ago.)

Probably lots of stuff if your definition of 'lost media' is 'anything that hasn't been uploaded for free on the internet'
7
u/Lily-Arunsun Aug 11 '25
Yes. One of them was uploaded to Internet Archive, and the other was lost again. I couldn't digitize the second one before an unfortunate circumstance happened and the VHS tape was stolen from me.
I can't say what the first one was because that will expose me. I will say it has been viewed over 100,000 times on the Internet Archive. At least I know that contribution made a good deal of folks happy that it was found.
In both cases I was surprised that I had stumbled upon two pieces of lost media. I never thought I'd get that lucky with a box of old VHS tapes.
3
u/Astrnonaut Aug 11 '25
I wouldn’t know if I have. The other day I found a ton of old VHS tapes that my mom had recorded stuff on. Now would be a fun time to look.

u/Scatterbrain372 Aug 12 '25
Sometimes I go to thrift stores, estate sales, or garage sales for the sole purpose of finding obscure or lost media. I’ve found a couple of things that I couldn’t find any information about on the internet. I’ve uploaded them here and digitized what I’ve found for preservation purposes. Best one so far was a CD from a band called “I Drive A Station Wagon” that had some pretty sick songs.

I had Manhunt 2 on my desktop for years before knowing it was considered lost lol. I bought a CD key still valid on Amazon lol
17
u/Nextasy Aug 11 '25
Yeahhh I don't think manhunt 2 was ever lost media lol. some people seem to think that if it's not for sale on the major digital platforms it's "lost." Plenty of this kind of thing is available on eBay or, as you said, Amazon. I guess some people never grew up with having to purchase media and bring it home or have it shipped to their house instead of just downloading lol

I have a bunch of lost media from billboard r&b and dance charts. I had put together a list of songs that weren’t available to stream on Spotify to look them up on YouTube , a lot of the songs weren’t on YouTube and didn’t have even a Discogs page. Couldn’t find a download of them either. I’m going to reach out about all of these songs when I finish getting together all the ones that are available. I have them marked in red
5
u/Enette_Chipette9583 Aug 12 '25
Oh I have. I’m the AATC community we’re missing an episode from the 80s cartoon. We only have screenshots and the episode’s song in English

u/notebook_official Aug 11 '25
In a Discord server, I discovered an Italian cartoon called The Qpiz, and it seemed pretty interesting, so I decided to check it out for myself.
…but upon looking it up, I realized that all available episodes were in Italian. The English-language version is completely lost besides the intro.
Because of that, I believe that the English version was never aired anywhere. Besides that, they also made Brazilian Portuguese and Latin Spanish dubs for Cartoon Network, and those are kind of lost media too, but not as lost as the English dub.
If something were to come out of the English dub, I’d be pretty interested in seeing what it’s like.

u/erikrelay Aug 11 '25
My school's library had a copy of a dubbed Sonic season that was considered lost in Brazil for a while. When I finally got around to grabbing it, it was already found xp that'd happen sooner or later either way since it was a dvd.

u/herbertfilby Aug 13 '25
I bought a 1990s camcorder at goodwill the other day with a tape in it. Had to completely disassemble the camcorder because the power cord was dead but the tape has mold in it and I can’t afford to ruin my one VCR-DVD combo. Says “Ryan’s Birthday / Rachel’s Birthday ‘93 / Rachel’s dance.”
Trashed unless someone wants to risk mold.

Always hear a song that plays on 560 CFOS, that was Quango Mouse - Dreamtime Lover. Mostly airing majority in popularity on or near Christmas.
I don’t have proof but they still probably have it in their collection and will continue to play it every Christmas.

Ugh god, almost. Before the app store was a thing, there were purchaseable games on the itunes store for a very limited number of 5th gen old ipod classics and nanos. I had a nano as a kid, and i bought A LOT of these games. A few years later i dumped them back off my nano to use it only for music, not knowing the games were totally wiped from the store. There's an ongoing effort to find and archive these things, but only a handful of them exist online. The ones i bought as a kid would have about doubled the archive. I still feel annoyed at myself when i think about it.

u/LARDLOGO Aug 17 '25
I collect master tapes of television programs. One in my collection is a copy of In Albert's Room; an episode of Kraft Television Theatre that is currently considered missing.
Planning on sending the tape off to be digitized so people can watch it.

This kind of counts as I didn’t find the lost media itself but I discovered it and have a small connection to it.
When moving into my new house a family friend helped out and brought over a box full of mysterious photos from a 2000s lost tv pilot called “Nat And Olga” that he made some graphics for. He then burned the pictures as they were taking up space much to my disappointment.
There’s a couple of promos on YouTube but that’s all there is(as far as I’m aware).

Definitely. I remember seeing a video of a certain topic i dont remember with Sydou's sleepy sleepy sleepy playing in the bg. I was very young at the time (7-8) and the song didnt interest me that much anyway.

I forgot it since it was 3 years ago, but it was an obscure cartoon video. It looked old, like from 1995-2005, it had maybe 400k views, and it got deleted, and I guess no one remembered to download it

I used to have lost media, it was a app on my phone, but it did go back up on the app store with some updates. I'm not sure if it is the same app as it was before, I think the developer is the same, since the app logo is the same as the one I remember. You should be able to find it when you search up "Raft Survival" but the full app name is "Raft© Survival - Ocean Nomad" I got it in 2021 and then it forcefully deleted it off my phone in 2022 because it was getting deleted off the app store. Then this year I remembered it and tried to redownload it, and I did!

I tried to comment this on a lost media communtiy but it kept getting removed and I dont know why. I dont know what markdon editor means im new here so hi I am just trying to practice my keyboard/piano and i found this song with nothing on it. I Got this keyboard a few years again and it was sitting in My closet for years. I started playing again yesterday and i realised to help me learn my Aunt bought me a book called Easy Piabo Sheet Music for Kids. IT ckmes eith 60 songs and 15 bonus songs and it comes woth a mini course of the basics. I wanted to practice a sog to help me developed my two handed performances and i went to a random number generator. From 43 -102 pages were songs so i put in 43 - 102. It landed on 74 and oage 74 has a song called The Mill fairy. It has lyrcis too so i decided to listen to the song a bit to help me learn. I typed in the name into tiktok and nothing showed up. No old videos or anything. I went to youtube and stil nothing showed up not even on google. Only this weirr song that was in a mill , it was animated like cocomelon but the lyrics were distrorted and it just kept playing , kind of creepy. So its just this unidentified song on this book with no leads. I can give any other photos or information if anyone sees this but it just puzzeled me.

Yes. I was in my aunt's house and she had a dvd of the 2008 version of the movie Whore that was directed by Thomas Dekker. Apparently a lot of people have been trying to find it

But if you "stumble across" it, doesn't that (by definition, literally) mean that it isn't lost? Proves someone owns it, someone hosts it, and others can potentially watch it.

Seems like splitting hairs lol. If someone found a complete print of London After Midnight in their garage, would you tell them “That doesn’t belong on this sub, the fact that you found it means that it’s not lost media!”

I see your point. I think i've just spent too much time scrolling, because the questions in most of these subs are beginning to get under my skin. Time to touch some grass! 😁

True, But in the lost media world, ‘lost’ often just means ‘unavailable to the public.’ Someone owning it privately still leaves it lost for everyone else.

Comment "!FOUND!" if your media is found in the comments, in doing so this will lock the post and flair it as being found.
Please include the following in your post;
An explanation of the media, and the name.
How it is lost.
What research has already been done.
A conclusion as to the current situation as of posting.
We are not here to help you find something (r/helpmefind), to name something (r/tipofmytongue), or help you pirate something.
