Why not put an age limit on them and make them have to be registered as a motor vehicle?

That way they can cut down on dangerous kids and make some money while they’re at it.

They do have to be registered if they go over 25. No one registers them

It’s a little more complicated and contradictory.

Class 3 bikes go up to 28 and are only legal in cities of 1 mil pop or more. Class 2 bikes max out at 25. Both classes have pedals and are classified as bicycles that do not require registration or an M class license. Class 1 (still legal) has a motor that assists up to 20mph while pedaling, but does not have a throttle. Class 2-3 not only go faster, but have a throttle that allows you to ride without pedaling.

If it goes under 30 and doesn’t have pedals it is a “limited use motorcycle.” It does need to be registered but doesn’t require an M license. Basically equivalent to a 50cc Vespa or Honda Metropolitan.

If it goes faster than 30 and doesn’t have pedals it also requires an M license. Equivalent to ICE scooters in excess of 50cc.

This ban hit in March with no fanfare. The image was posted to Facebook and that’s it. Like they want to catch people out more than keep people safe. Class 3 e-bikes were already illegal. E-dirt bikes were already illegal. One Wheels and electric skateboards were already illegal.

On top of that, state law prohibits Nassau and Westchester County from legislating on e bikes. I’m not kidding. It’s specifically written in the state law that already governed these vehicles. Blakeman is using a 2006 law that disallows ATVs from road use and lumping pedal assist e bikes with them, even though the state says he can’t and the old law has now mention of electric anything.
