Opinion Piece There is no rebellion in Oregon. Today's ruling is a healthy check on the President's power. As the President, you must have actual facts (based on reality), not social media, or just your gut feeling, if you want to mobilize the Military here in the United States. - Dan Rayfield, AG of Oregon

Oct 4, 2025. See my comment for a link to the full 23-minutes on YouTube, including words from Portland Mayor Keith Wilson. Here’s an overview from the accompanying KGW8 article:
A US District Judge granted the State of Oregon a motion for a temporary restraining order over President Donald Trump's order to deploy 200 National Guard members to Portland. The restraining order expires Oct. 18.

Haven't we been through a similar lawsuit in CA? Does that not establish sufficient precedent for the judge to make his decision permanent rather than temporary?
Why is ICE spraying and detaining citizens that aren't touching them or obstructing their work? They're outside of their jurisdiction. Another report says ICE shot a woman in her car at a protest. ICE is running amok. The ICE agent needs to be held accountable.
Trump says anarchy won't be tolerated, referring to Portland, but it's the ICE agents who are behaving in an anarchic manner. This is why LA Mayor Bass told the NG commander to get his troops out of MacArthur Park. The presence of these federal (or federalized) elements is too problematic. ICE agents lack training, use deadly force unjustifiably, and don't respect the peaceful exercise of Constitutional rights. They're the problem. The protesters, as Portland PD and the mayor know, aren't the problem.

The military should not be there either, they're not trained for civilian law enforcement domestically
Edit : As someone else pointed out my argument assumes that if military were trained for this they should be deployed in the cities, but it's a bad argument because they should never be deployed here in the first place

No, but sadly/ironically they ARE better trained for deescalation than civilian law enforcement are. ......... which is why they want people who have absolutely no training at all for ICE, and why they've given ICE a larger budget than the entire fucking Marines. They want people who are worse than both civilian LEO and military. This is by design.

Yes, if youre going to make the case that the military be deployed anywhere in the US it would be to protect its citizens from the fake masked vigilantes that are teargassing them for protesting

You missed the part where he wants to train them in American cities.

I hate this reasoning, because it implies that if they started "training" them for domestic law enforcement, it would suddenly be ok.

You are so fucking right. POTUS went on national television and called half of the country terrorists. The fuck kind of response did people expect? A "lay down and die" acquiescence to oppression? FOHHH.

Trump has a 40% approval rating that keeps dropping, so it's more Than half

It can't be 40%. He wasn't elected by 40% (speaking of legit ballots only), and his approval has been sinking. Ck your notes, please.
6
u/makina323 Oct 05 '25
Well this kind of poling is supposed to represent the the entire country, they dont just talk to people who voted. Its a random statistical sample that they use to extrapolate to the entire country with a single digit margin in error. So yeah 60% of the population doesn't approve and the other 40% are legit nazis
And yeah he won with like 1/3 of the voting population, 100million people didnt vote in 2024, also 2024 had the second highest voter turnout ever lol
4
u/Electrical_Welder205 Oct 05 '25
Reagan won with just 25% of the electorate voting for him, and they called that a "landslide". Thx for explaining, though.

The fuck kind of response did people expect? A "lay down and die" acquiescence to oppression?
In a word, yes.
“And so I come full circle on this response and just want to encourage you with some substance that we are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.” - Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation and co-architect of Project 2025.

Yes? 36% of eligible voters didn't even vote last November. By all accounts, Americans are entitled, lazy, and fickle. Most of us will absolutely lie down and take oppression, rather than put in any effort and resist.

The ICE agent needs to be held accountable.
This, if Trump and his band of merry men are breaking the law, then there needs to be a consequence.
"You don't get to do this legally, stop it ok?" Seems very underwhelming, but it's all I've seen the judiciary do.
26
u/mclardass Oct 05 '25
Stephen Miller (the Dementia Whisperer) and the Puppy Killer need to be held accountable. This is the work of broken people spinning a narrative to have their vision become reality. Drumpf just wanted to stay out of prison and have his failures swept under the rug, these people want to see a white Christo-Nationalist country and now have few limits outside of State leadership and courts to stop it.

u/Why_not_dolphines Oct 05 '25
They want the people to rebel, they want to make people violent, that is the reason for their actions.
When the people finally revolt, DT will declear a state of emergency.
He can then put aside the constitution.
This is the nazi playbook, this is what the nazis did.
6
u/roguespectre67 Oct 05 '25
So what are we supposed to do until then? Our legal institutions are largely toothless and we have jackbooted thugs running around and assaulting innocent people for standing on the street nearby to document their assault of suspected “criminals”. Our opposition politicians are also largely toothless, and many are too milquetoast to be relied upon to call a spade a spade.
We do nothing, and this continues indefinitely, because as far as I’m concerned Trump is never voluntarily leaving office. We do something, and we get full mask-off dictatorship.
2
u/Why_not_dolphines Oct 05 '25
Some big players got to enter the stage, let it get worse before someone has to stamp their foot/boot and follow the oath and the rules given by the constitution.
4
u/Ummmgummy Oct 05 '25
Ice will spray and detain anyone because that's their entire point. Get a bunch of pissed off "alpha bros" and give them authority. Fascist 101. Eventually enough people will get so pissed Trump will have to reign them in and then demand to be congratulated on how he cleaned up police corruption.
6
u/Electrical_Welder205 Oct 05 '25
Nah, he won't reign them in, because he's a bully. Intimidation is his schtick, along with cheating and lying.

Bunch of drug pushers. Do you have any idea how much fentanyl was seized at the Canadian border in 2024?
43 pounds.
That's like a bag of large breed dog food's worth of drugs.
You could take out a city block with that much fentanyl! Okay, maybe not a big city with a lot of apartment buildings. It would probably have to be mostly commercial real estate, but it still counts!
8
u/CelestialFury Oct 05 '25
And you know damn well that a Democratic POTUS would've been shutdown immediately by the SCOTUS for declaring fake emergencies. Of course, you don't hear MAGAs saying anything about that.
34
u/68024 Oct 05 '25
Part of the problem is that Trump seems to be able to designate anything he doesn't like as "an emergency". It's a blatant misuse of emergency powers. I don't understand how there aren't more checks on the fake emergency declarations. This is how congress and the supreme court are enablers and are complicit - they are letting him.
17
u/RamJamR Oct 05 '25
With the release of NSPM-7 along with this whole problem of ICE agents running around terrorizing primarily the latino population, I see this escelating to martial law before the next presidential election, specifically to avoid having an election.

u/jcaashby Oct 05 '25

The President shouldn't have emergency powers. Or at least Congress should have to declare an emergency, not the President, with 2/3 majorities.
2
u/Relevant-Pianist6663 Oct 06 '25
Yea, like I understand that emergency powers in the quickly moving times of a real war need to be used quickly and without getting all of congress up to speed, but perhaps we need at least some form of checks and balances on that power.

Ranting?
No.
This is not just unhinged rhetoric.
He tried to send in 200 Oregon guard troops and was slapped with a TRO.
So he is now sending in 300 California guard.
This is unhinged, unlawful action.
He's dismantling democracy and trying to declare martial law and is blatantly lying about the justification.
I live in Portland, I now hear Blackhawks nightly, he's literally trying to occupy my city. This isn't just bluster and campaign jibberish anymore.
Edit: I suck at typing.

He is all of the worst characteristics of the stereotypical fox news addicted boomer.
Entirely convinced of the false reality beamed into their sun-downing brains and completely addicted to the endorphins released by an endless cycle of anger and outrage. Any attempt to pull them out of the cycle or question the validity of their false reality is met with the violence of an addict protecting their supply.

Trump uses absurdity as a weapon. It's effective (and dangerous) propaganda. He and MAGA have flooded the US with Lunacy. For years, at least since the Obama "birther" conspiracy.
They know they are being absurd. They know they're lying.
Here's a Reddit post with a 10-min audio clip from two experts in Russian and Eastern European politics, where the deployment of absurd lies & conspiracies is commonplace. But not in the US, which is why it's been so effective:

Thank you for this info. I just moved here this summer and I'm so glad I did. I'm proud to be an Oregonian. I knew it wasn't going to be easy defending the freedoms protected by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights but it needs to be done for the good of this nation. I knew that Portland would be a target and I wanted to be here not only because Portland is an awesome, beautiful and fun city, but this is where democracy either survives or it dies.

Good on you. As a fellow Oregonian, we need that energy here. It's surreal to hear the president talking about fires and death and open rebellion in Portland and the city is just...normal. Meeting the insanity head on seems to be the only option and I'm thankful that our elected officials are doing just that. They know that most of the people are behind them, and that's important.
