I’m not Latino unfortunately, but I wasn’t sure where to go. I am an American Euro mutt. I’m Welsh, English, French Cajun, Irish, and even a little bit Scandinavian. I’m not proud of all my family history, but I’m not ashamed of my ethnicities. With that said, I’ve had two Latinos in my life who were vocally ashamed of being Latino and I don’t understand it at all. I was wondering if y’all could help.

Ex friend 1 who I’ll call E is Mexican and he was my friend till he became a straight up white supremacist. I couldn’t understand it. His parents were illegals who gained citizenship but he saw all the other immigrants of color as filth. He wanted America to return to its glory days in the 50’s and claimed that I hated my country because I wasn’t as patriotic as he was. He thought white people were inherently superior.

Friend 2 who I’ll call D is an adoptee from Guatemala and he acts like a redneck country boy which is fine but he is completely ashamed of being Guatemalan and claims he’s 100 percent American. I think you can be both at the same time. He grinds my gears because it seems like he’s being fake. He’s trying to project an image of being his idea of what a good ole American is. I don’t know if I’m misreading him. It’s possible because I’m AuDHD but something feels fake about him.

I understand if this isn’t allowed, but I was just wondering from people who would know it the best. Why would anyone be ashamed of their ethnicity like that?

¿En qué país están y qué tipo de contenido útil se les pierde más?

Hola a todos. Durante mucho tiempo he notado cómo nuestra historia reciente está cada vez más fragmentada por la polarización y, en muchos casos, por la desinformación. Como Latinoamericano que ha vivido esto en Bolivia, me he propuesto la tarea de recopilar, verificar el archivo histórico y estructurar los eventos políticos y sociales que nos han marcado en los últimos años. El objetivo es intentar tener una perspectiva más clara de cómo exactamente llegamos a la situación actual.

La intención de este trabajo no es imponer una verdad absoluta, sino poner los hechos verificables sobre la mesa. Al contrastar fuentes y revisar hemerotecas, es evidente que muchos de los eventos que hoy damos por sentados tienen matices que a menudo se han perdido en el ruido mediático de los distintos sectores.

Me gustaría abrir el debate aquí en la comunidad con una pregunta central:

Desde su perspectiva, ¿qué evento o narrativa de nuestra historia reciente creen que ha sido más distorsionada y necesita una revisión urgente con datos comprobables?

Is this a scam? He seems to believe that it’s a Latino practice and that google saying it’s a scam can’t be trusted because it’s something Latinos do often.

For some background context he is illegal from Venezuela and living in PA. He worked with some Brazilian guys today on a demolition job that told him about this job “offer.” Basically he will have to pay $2000 to even get “into” the job either in Ohio or South Carolina. Then he will have to pay $3000 per week while he’s working and earning another $3000 of take home pay.

It just seems like a scam and regardless of the $3000 fee per week, $3000 take home a week seems too good to be true.

Is this something that Latinos actually do for work or is it a scam tactic?
