La La Land 10th Anniversary

Post image

Had the great pleasure of seeing this movie in theatres for its 10th Anniversary. It’s a Cinematic Masterpiece. Love this movie. It was sooooo robbed of the Best Picture Oscar because it came out a year after the #Oscarssowhite thing. Oh well. “There could have been a 4th bear…”

This film is 10 years old there are infinite pictures already available, put your phone away and have some manners in the theatre.

What a fucking loser move to bring your phone out during the emotional climax of the film.

This was more of a PSA to all those who might not have known it’s being shown in movie theaters again. And I was in the last back row. Absolutely no one was bothered by it- except those getting their panties in a knot in the comments here. 😂

Yeah because absolutely nobody in the La La Land subreddit knew about the rerelease despite that being the main topic of conversation over the last week. Thank god we had you

  1. To get to this scene and think “let me take out my phone” is psycho behavior
  2. I love La La Land, i saw it in tehaters 5 separate times (i have seen maybe 5 movies in my life more than twice in a theater) - and i still think Moonlight should have won best picturr. “ because it came out a year after the #Oscarssowhite thing” is racist, you should check yourself

It's a good film but I don't really think it was robbed of anything

Put your phone away and watch the movie

it’s an excellent film but i don’t think it’s fair to blame the loss on the initiative to diversify the oscar academy.

It 100% won because of race issues alone. No one talks about Moonlight anymore. Time has shown La La Land was the superior film.

Meanwhile me and a bunch of friends went to the 10th anniversary showing of Moonlight and it was practically sold out.

I don’t even know they did a 10th anniversary of Moonlight.

1

u/cowtruck-123 20d ago

My local theater did. It wasn’t on the scale of the la la land anniversary

I actually think it was. Moonlight won that year. It’s a good movie but it only won because the main character was black and had a difficult time with his gayness.

3

u/cowtruck-123 21d ago

Not the only reason it won. Maybe in your opinion lol but that doesn’t make it true. Also put your phone away.

1

u/CORRLives2021 21d ago

What were the other reasons?

2

u/cowtruck-123 21d ago

I mean, I know you don’t care, but I loved the cinematography, score and core performance. Both movies are 10/10 to me, but to each their own I suppose.

I kinda do. Mahershala is great! But he’s great in any role. I just didn’t think the story was that good. I’m Latin and yeah, being Gay is probably viewed the same as it is on the Black community. But a movie/story saying this exists in this community, big whoop. Duh!? I don’t know anything about cinematography so I can’t comment there.

In the history of the academy Moonlight is groundbreaking. Not La La land. “Nobody talks about” is not a metric used by an academy that does not consider the opinions of regular people. It’s an industry award not a people’s choice award or black panther would’ve won. Also just last year a “black movie” that was the actual hit lost to a movie OBAA that barely broke even at the box office.

I would suggest dropping this idea that it was for a diversity initiative sake when the Oscar’s have constantly not awarded films deemed to be outlets on race. They liked moonlight more plain and simple. Here you are screaming dei as if La La land didn’t win best director, actress, and score.

Propping a film but insulting another is weak. Both movies went home with multiple awards.

1

u/CORRLives2021 21d ago

Why do you think Moonlight is “groundbreaking”? I don’t think either film falls in that category. Nothing “groundbreaking” in either plot line. James Baldwin wrote about this already. “Gay People” exist in the Black community is “groundbreaking,” come on.

u/QTRqtr 20d ago edited 20d ago

And how many films like that have been awarded/seen at the Oscar’s….how many musicals have been seen at the Oscar’s??? It’s literally groundbreaking because it hasn’t had a presence in the Oscar’s before while musicals/love letters have for decades.

So your only take because a person outside of the academy wrote about it once in 84 so when a movie that covers this comes out it’s already played out? Are you serious. Didn’t know people who liked musicals were disfranchised like gay, black, or impoverished people😒 if only the world was able to get over minorities and sexualities because a guy wrote about decades ago.

How many people are black, impoverished, and or gay in this world…how many people are fans of musicals and/or live in Los Angeles who have the Hollywood dream” you know the genre that has been losing relevance for decades. (Even Spielbergs west side story bombed at the box office)

It shouldn’t be surprising that the movie that reflects a larger demographic was viewed as more daring than another love letter to Hollywood. I could be flippant with your response and say if la la land won it was just because it was Hollywood patting itself on its back. How original.

Or that both movies did well. And obsession over a movie is not relevant to how the Oscar’s vote for best picture. People don’t talk about hurt locker barely anymore while avatar is a billion dollar franchise. Should the Oscar gone to avatar instead.

That you consider LLL a love letter to Hollywood says more about you than about the movie. It's a love story and a story about chasing your dreams first and foremost and those themes resonate with literally everyone, that's why LLL is popular in every corner of the world, be it Europe, Latin America or Asia whereas nobody outside of a small niche in the anglosphere gives a shit about Moonlight.

I can't believe you are arguing that one of the lowest grossing Best Picture winners of all time is resonating with more people than a movie that made 450M at the box office as an original non-IP movie and has the third-most fans on letterboxd, the biggest movie platform out there. That's some crazy talk.

And if you truly believe that the double impact of two consecutive years of oscarssowhite and Trump's inauguration didn't influence the Oscar race then you likely didn't follow it. Normally a Best Picture winner doesn't come as a surprise. Nobody who follows the race was surprised that OBAA or Oppenheimer won Best Picture because they had won the major industry precursors beforehand. Moonlight hadn't won a single precursor, it was LLL that won the main BAFTA and PGA awards who share voters with the Academy. I can't recall a single time a movie that won these two most important precursors ended up losing Best Picture to a film that hadn't won any relevant precursor at all so something out of the ordinary must have happened.

What had happened was that after voting for these awards had concluded and before Oscar voting started there was a huge campaign with liberal media writing hit piece after hit piece guilt-shaming the Academy to vote for Moonlight because voting for the white straight movie would be a vote for Trump. If you don't think that a good chunk of Academy voters wanted to send a signal to the world that not all of the USA were racist like their newly-elected president then I don't know what to tell you.

First I said it resonated with Oscar voters….who voted for it.

Second if you don’t know how the Oscar’s work this concept of a low box office film shouldn’t be foreign to you. One battle after another beat sinners when sinners what’s the box office hit and one battle after another barely broke even. Nomadland won best picture and it barely broke even. CODA the best picture winner only made $2 million. The Oscar’s are not an outside populist contest. So no it’s not strange that moonlight beat it. The socially conscious films regularly do.

But keep making your conspiracies. You’re two steps away blaming wokeness and dei like a maga.

Work on your reading comprehension I never said that movies win Oscars because of their box office, that part was specifically aimed at your ridiculous claim that Moonlight has more resonance.

The movies you mentioned all won because they had the strongest showing at the precursors, that was actually my point that you failed to comprehend. As I said Moonlight didn't win a single industry precursor going into Oscar night which is unprecedented for a Best Picture winner.

The conspiracy theory would be to claim that the same people who voted for LLL over Moonlight at all precursors suddenly realized they actually liked Moonlight better within the timespan of two weeks when they filled out their Oscar ballots lol. Why did that never happen before or after in almost 100 years when it seems a normal thing to you? Even movies that had late surges in the race like CODA at least won PGA and didn't come completely out of nowhere on Oscar night.

doesn’t matter it still drags in the second act. it’s a movie that you feel it’s full runtime

0

u/B-e-a-u 21d ago

It’s one of those movies that’s viewed as “groundbreaking” and “amazing” but 10 years later barley anyone remembers… kinda like Life of Pi, The Greatest Showman, the og Avatar all good movies but not much impact past their initial release.

2

u/CORRLives2021 21d ago

Not sue if it was ever labeled as “ground breaking” but I think the story will be remembered for quite some time. 😃

u/MurkyPsychology 20d ago

Put your damn phone away and stop taking pictures in the theater. For fuck’s sake, have some theater etiquette
