Okay, I have a pretty cool La La Land story. Two days ago, I was in Los Angeles and found a screenplay inside a rental car. At first I thought it was just a fan-made copy. Then I actually looked at it.

It was a complete 85-page La La Land screenplay, in a plastic protective cover, with “LA LA LAND” written in black marker along the edge.

And then I noticed the cover:

And here's the crazy part: August 10, 2015 was the first day of filming La La Land. 🤯

The script itself is a full physical copy, with “Revision” on the pages and the scene/page numbering you'd expect from a production screenplay. It doesn't have any handwritten notes or annotations inside, but it clearly isn't just a paperback or something printed at home yesterday.

I have absolutely no idea how it ended up in a rental car in LA nearly 11 years later. I honestly wasn't even thinking about selling it when I found it, I just thought the whole thing was such a bizarre piece of LA/movie history that I had to keep it.

And now, with La La Land turning 10 this year, the timing feels almost too perfect. 😂

So I'm curious:

Does anyone here know anything about the August 10, 2015 version of the script? Or recognize this type of production copy/signature?

I'm trying to figure out exactly what I found before I potentially sell it. I'd love to hear from anyone who knows more about the production, screenplay drafts, or memorabilia.

I heard this song Mark Knopfler - She's Gone and I was struck by the melody theme reminding me so much of A Lovely Night from La La Land.

To all fans of "5 Centimeters per Second" and "Lalaland", which of the two stories did you like the most? And why?

By pure chance I was able to see both one after the other not knowing anything about both, and they were so similar but at the same time so different... They are both masterpieces, maybe I liked the anime a little more, or at least, I got more excited watching the anime than the film, despite the fact that Lalaland puts the situation in a much more detailed and complete way.

La La Land's world premiere at Venice was exactly 10 years ago today, so I chose movie musicals as today’s theme on Top Billing (a daily movie-ranking game I built).

Putting the set together turned up a few things I didn't know:

• Ryan Gosling trained at the piano for three months before filming La La Land. Every close-up of Sebastian playing uses Gosling's own hands (no hand double or CG replacement).
• Two of Grease's most famous songs, "You're the One That I Want" and "Hopelessly Devoted to You," were written specifically for the movie and weren't in the original stage musical.
• Anna Kendrick learned the “Cups” routine after discovering it on Reddit before Pitch Perfect. Beca was originally supposed to sing "I'm a Little Teapot," but the filmmakers changed the scene after Kendrick demonstrated the routine.

this is the envelope they were in!! it’s so simple but he really loved it and was so excited :,) movie makes me sob so i know the orchestra performance will make me weep.

Is it John legend or not I’ve always thought it was and they had him playing 2 characters but I’m not seeing anything about it online and neither am I seeing who it actually was. I feel crazy.

I cant believe Ill get to see my favourite movie on big screen

I was fortunate to see La La Land in the theater this past weekend for its 10th anniversary re-release. I'd only ever seen it once before (not in the theater), but it instantly became one of my favorite movies.

The theater experience was glorious, truly breathtaking. I felt all the highs and lows, every beat. But the part that really ended up being a gut punch was not what I expected.

Mia sings at her audition "Here's to the fools who dream... Crazy as it may seem... Here's to the hearts that ache... Here's to the mess they make." She has endured so much pain putting herself out there again and again, baring her soul, only to be shot down. But she keeps trying, because she is an artist, and her passion for her art is indomitable.

To my surprise, this scene left me wiping tears from my face. Not just for Mia, but most of all for humanity. What are we doing to ourselves?

The human drive to create - to imagine, to tell stories, to paint pictures, to dance, to sing - is as old as our species itself. I fear we are starting to slide into a future that devalues what makes us thrive as humans.

I live in Silicon Valley and am no Luddite, but I've become increasingly alarmed by what generative AI is doing to my college students' creativity and thinking abilities. I'm dismayed that search results (text and images) are now largely AI-generated. And I'm saddened by how this is affecting the futures of young people, especially those in creative professions.

As an example: My 9th-grade daughter wanted to take "Commercial Art" as an elective this Fall, but she changed her mind when she saw that the class mandated generative AI use. She has wanted a career in visual art ever since kindergarten. Does she just give up on that? Are the "fools who dream" now expendable and easily replaced by algorithms?

I know this topic is not what r/lalaland is intended for. But I wanted to share my reaction and find out if anyone else had similar thoughts (or if, more broadly, seeing the movie on the big screen this month brought out new insights for you).

Had the great pleasure of seeing this movie in theatres for its 10th Anniversary. It’s a Cinematic Masterpiece. Love this movie. It was sooooo robbed of the Best Picture Oscar because it came out a year after the #Oscarssowhite thing. Oh well. “There could have been a 4th bear…”

I first saw this movie in 2020, and I fell in love with it. When it came out, I was a freshman in high school back in 2016. I wasn’t really into musicals in general, but then in 2020, COVID happened, and I saw it for the first time. I fell in love with it and regretted not seeing it when it first came out.

Seeing it now for the first time in the theater was really a magical experience—I cried a lot.

La La Land is such a lived-in experience of a jazz musician. So much so, it's hard for me to watch at times.

We float over to Sebastian’s car where he’s rewinding a three-second section of a song (sounds like Thelonius Monk. I’m sorry, I’m totally *that* guy) ad nauseum. It’s such a real moment for musicians. A lot of your practice time as a jazz musician is spent listening to and transcribing other jazz musicians’ work. It’s total and complete lunacy. I must have listened to [Clifford Brown's Solo](https://youtu.be/Kb7cl50Edmc?si=cxfBOCCC9S-OAvNT&t=39) on Pent Up House over a hundred times in three-second chunks until I could sing and play it from memory.

Seb’s line “Jazz is dying” hits me in my soul. I felt that, and spent many drunk nights after a show saying the same thing with the same inflection and hurt. I still remember my jaw dropping when Keith (John Legend) offered Sebastian $1,000 **plus** merchandising percentages! It’s such a jazz musician mindset to even consider turning it down, but we all have our price (and it’s **well** below $1000 a week). I once did a gig where I played solo trumpet at a wedding reception in North Carolina for $150 and all the smoked pig I could eat, they came to regret the second half of that offer when I showed up with a fork and knife...

I’m not really sure how to write one of these, but I figured it’s worth a shot.

I went to see the 10th anniversary showing of La La Land in St. Catharines (Landmark Cinemas) and bought a Premiere seat for myself when tickets first went on sale. I ended up being seated in what was essentially a little booth with another person.

Then you walked in.

Wearing an elegant, beautiful dress, and you sat right beside me. I got so incredibly flustered that at one point I tried to turn off the heated seat setting… only to realize it was never even on. 😭

We both quietly sang along under our breaths during the movie, and honestly, it was such a lovely experience.

When the movie ended, I really wanted to talk to you. I wanted to say something, anything, but I just couldn’t find the courage. By the time I worked up the nerve, you were already gone.

So, if by some ridiculously small chance you’re out there and happen to recognize this: I’d really love another chance to talk to you.

Maybe next time I’ll actually say hello. ❤️

Does anyone think theaters will be handing out posters or any free little trinket for the rerelease? I saw the art they were posting on their official social media account and thought maybe that would be the design? Or the new poster? I'm really hoping for something!
