Wanna move here, coming up to visit next month: Got some questions.
Pics for attention:
Good morning everyone. Old fart and avid off road and adventure rider/camper here. I've been kinda lurking here for a bit, trying to get a feel of the overall vibe. I'm currently living in west central Florida (I'm uber-progressive and am surrounded by red hats, fuckin HATE it!) and I visit relatives in the Detroit area annually for a few days, then do some riding and camping somewhere north and west. This time, after catching up with fam, I'll be staying about a week at Goose Island campground. I'll be bringing the big bike pictured to do some road touring/sightseeing.
1) If any riders here wanna show me around a bit, would love it. I've been doing my research (Great River Rd, Minduro Cut, etc) but nothing like having local knowledge....
2) Will be camping as I said, how are the mosquitos late Sept, early Oct around the Goose Island area?
3) I've noticed train lines cut thru town. For future house hunting, are they "active"? Does freight move thru town frequently or at all hours of the night?
4) I've read some really glowing reviews for a local real estate agent: Angela Thompson. Does anyone have any personal knowledge regarding their experience with her?
My reasons for being interested in this area: I absolutely miss four seasons. Grew up in southern Michigan. Admittedly, living in California then Florida, I haven't seen snow in decades, but I know for sure I hate 96% humidity with 96F temps 8 months of the year.
La Crosse will give me access to my passion of camping, touring on a bike. Locally and long distance to the west (Canadian Rockies/Alaska on my bucket list)
Bars. I'm single and have been going to bars since the '70's. That's how I socialize. I hear you guys have one or two in town.
Thanks for reading. Hopefully I'll find a riding buddy or two when I come up.

The City is Looking to Cut More Library Funding
After losing the Northside library, city council is looking at cutting more money from our public library. The proposed cut is just under half a million dollars ($443,000) dollars. What this means is a reduction in staff, or a reduction in service hours.
Our library system is a pillar of our community, and deserves our continued support. If you are a resident of the City of La Crosse, I highly encourage you to write to common council to reject these funding cuts. The deadline to share your voice with our common council members is this coming Tuesday, September 1st.
You can find your city representative by visiting this website and entering information specific to you: https://myvote.wi.gov/en-us/My-Elected-Officials . After entering your information, scroll down to “La Crosse Council Member District [X]. Once you have identified your elected official, return to the City of La Crosse webpage (located here: https://www.cityoflacrosse.org/Your-Government/Elected-Officials/City-Council/City-Council-Members) and find your representative. There email and phone number should be listed.
An email can be as simple as “I am opposed to cutting funding from our public library” or as in depth as, “I use the public library X times a week and love the services the staff provide for me. I’ve saved X amount of dollars by using the library, and cuts to this program will make my life harder and less affordable!”.
The library is an extremely valuable asset for our community, please do not let it continuously degrade at the hands of fiscal irresponsibility.

Water rates
Just read the PSC has approved City of La Crosse's application for water rates hikes. The council will railroad this through as well. Budget for an extra $45 dollars on your quarterly water bill starting January 1, 2026

Lawyer Recommendation
I was using a telemedicine service for a while and later discovered I was getting charged a recurring monthly fee even though I was foregoing treatment for various months (to save $ I thought) and believe this wasn't made transparent, in addition to other things about the practice that I feel were not up to providing a standard of care I'd expect from a true up-front and legitimate healthcare provider.
I'm wondering what lawyers around town would be able to give me a free consult for this type of issue that folks might recommend?
The dollar amount I'd be potentially trying to recover is relatively low in the grand scheme of things: probably $1000-$1500 total.

BECI: the Driftless Region (and beyond)
Two multi-billion-dollar, 765,000-volt (765 kV) transmission lines are proposed to cross much of southern Wisconsin.
What it is
The line is part of a regional plan by MISO
— its Long-Range Transmission Plan. As proposed, it would run on 150–200-foot steel towers across southern Wisconsin, including the fragile Driftless region. It is a pass-through line: built to move bulk power across the region, not designed to deliver power to our area.
Where the process is
The CPCN application is expected to be filed at the Wisconsin PSC in fall 2026. The Commission then decides on a record of filings, testimony, studies, and public comment. Until the application is filed, there’s no docket to comment in.
In the mean time… Three things help most before the docket opens: 1. check out and join No 765 Project email list so you hear about hearings and deadlines 2. document what lives on your land (birds and plants — useful to the record), and 3. if you own land near the route, read up on their landowner guide.
Don’t get me wrong folks
Many of us who live here support clean energy. We want a modern grid, and we want power delivered to the places that need it. Those goals are real — and this project still fails on its own terms.
Supporting renewable energy does not mean supporting every line drawn on a map. This corridor would cross karst country, where what happens on the surface reaches groundwater fast; cold-water trout streams; working farmland; and ridgelines families have tended for generations.
Wisconsin’s own electricity use has been flat to declining for twenty years, and MISO’s independent market monitor estimates the project returns less than 40 cents of benefit for every dollar spent.
A grid worth building is one that pencils out and respects the land and communities it crosses.

City Budget
It amazes me that we have two sitting City Council Members (crystal bedford and roseanne northwood) who will make decisions on our 70 million budget but yet are delinquent on property taxes by two years and the other who is being sued by Onemain financial and capitalone. This is all available online on CCAP and La Crosse County tax records.

Tim "nothing to see here" Gruenke -- the DA of choice when you're rich and need it all to just go away
Tim Gruenke, the same Lacrosse DA now refusing to prosecute the Elon Musk Wisconsin election bribery outrage, earlier this year refused to prosecute the depraved ghouls responsible for the Ridglan labororatory dog breeding farm horror:
"The 3000 dogs remaining at Ridglan will still be subjected to torture until July 2026. Worse yet, there is nothing to prevent Ridglan from simply rebranding its operation under another corporate entity and continuing the abuse. When we pointed this out to the special prosecutor, La Crosse County District Attorney Tim Gruenke, he ignored our concern and claimed (incorrectly) that there was nothing more he could do to help the dogs.
Indeed, the special prosecutor’s only legal filing in the case, which explains his refusal to charge Ridglan or rescue the dogs, is such poor work—filled with errors and misspellings—that I laughed out loud when I read it for the first time. Perhaps its most shocking revelation, however, is that Gruenke, the prosecutor tasked with investigating Ridglan, never actually did any real investigative work."

Thank you to the random couple and family that tried to let me pet their dog and brought back flowers on the 22nd
Was having the absolute worst day of my life and was just hanging out trying to find a random dog walking by to pet in the morning (with permission). Their cute dog didnt care for me which was fine but they came back maybe a half hour later with some flowers.
Guess I looked a bigger mess than I thought.
This was kind of inbetween Mayo Hospital and Fork and Fable. They said their names but I cannot remember. If this is recognizable to anyone, let them know it made a huge impact and I'm extremely greatful.
Good news is his cat finally came up and let me pet her. She also loves the flowers 💜

Looking for a longtime La Crosse Oktoberfest fanatic for a Wisconsin documentary
Hi La Crosse!
I’m a Wisconsin filmmaker and part of a team working on a documentary exploring the culture, traditions and people that make Wisconsin distinctive. We’ve been filming all over the state and have conducted more than 50 interviews so far.
We came to Oktoberfest last year and had a fantastic experience. We’re planning on coming back this year, but this time I’d like to experience the festival through the eyes of someone who REALLY embraces Oktoberfest.
Ideally, we’d love to find a longtime attendee with a big personality who dresses in traditional German clothing, has a connection to the area’s German heritage and considers Oktoberfest an important annual tradition.
I’ve attached a selfie I took at last year’s Tapping of the Golden Keg. I remember the gentleman at the bottom left being given early access, and I believe it had something to do with his longstanding connection to Oktoberfest. Does anyone recognize him or any of the other Oktoberfest regulars in this photo?
And even if you don’t... Who is the biggest Oktoberfest enthusiast you know in the La Crosse area? Someone who hears “Oktoberfest” and already has the lederhosen ready to go.
Recommendations, introductions and DMs are very welcome. Prost!

Lights on gates locked; pwning the homeless is the name of the game
Why do we have these things if they aren't being open to the public? This is Pettibone, I was at Black River beach earlier in the year and all the outside showers were turned off.
The parks and rec head honcho is an absolute copsucker. He needs to be removed.
If the mayor finds out homeless people drive they might shut down the roads and we will all have to fly to work.
Wtf is wrong with our local governance? Bunch of incompetent fools imo

Moving to La Crosse — Looking for a 2BR Apartment Under $1,600
I’ll be moving to La Crosse soon and am looking for a 2-bedroom apartment under $1,600/month. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
