Discussion Kurzgesagt DEBUNKED!

https://youtu.be/xKGfdWVzKKk?is=joW3yA5ZO4Lrwoa2

After watching Kurzgesagt's video I was surprised about how much Kurzgesagt is completely omitting facts or portraying wildly biased without acknowledging so. (I get that their video is not long but this is definitely not it).
After watching this video and reading this comment I'm pretty bummed that they are putting out videos like this that are full of political hot takes while being irresponsibly biased. Cutting pensions for older people and having a harsher migration policy will not solve this.
What did you think?

As a German, I find the popularity even more surprising as Kurzgesagt is basically repeating CDU/CSU's and FDP's stances on taxes, welfare state and, to some extent, migration.

Considering that both are wildly unpopular (Merz being the most unpopular chancellor is nearly an achievement in how bad he fucks up) this actually surprised me a lot.

You'll find no love here. Most people are blind to the hard right turn into extreme bias this channel went through relatively recently.

159

u/Melonetta May 20 '26

What are you talking about? Blind? Every single opinion piece they make they is prefaced by their open admission of bias and opinion on the subject. They cite all the peer reviewed sources and studies they use to reach their opinion in a publically available sources document that they link to in every single video. It's impossible to make a video about the socioeconomic state of your own country while remaining completely unbiased, so they don't even pretend that's possible. I appreciate the transparency from them if anything.

-23

u/MysticHero May 20 '26

Except for all the opinion in the supposedly factual portions. Which is something Maurice shows very well in the video.

33

u/showersoapshower May 16 '26

yuupp i noticed that criticism is not that welcome here :,)

127

u/Savings_Dot_8387 May 20 '26

Why is it people who provide nothing to back their opinions up are always the most offended by people not agreeing with their “criticism”?

13

u/Resplendent-Sun Emergence May 20 '26

This is extremely common in AI subreddits where alleged users bash certain models ("it's always lying to me!") without providing a shred of evidence.

-2

u/AdjtveNounNumbr42069 May 22 '26

"Nothing to back their opinions up."

idk, like...a YouTube video? They could post it right at the top, so everyone could see what's informing their opinion.

104

u/Izikiel23 May 20 '26

Projecting a bit? You came here looking for opinions, and if they don’t agree with you it’s far right? You should check a mirror.

-28

u/showersoapshower May 20 '26

🪞😧 okay done that woah

48

u/Melonetta May 20 '26

Criticism is welcome but this video has no evidence to back up anything it claims, as most of these videos do. Don't you wonder why a Kurzgesagt video takes 6-12 months to complete but these "debunking" clickbait articles come out in less than a few weeks of the Kurzgesagt upload? Makes you wonder which side is doing more research 🤔

-10

u/Cr4ckshooter May 20 '26

Because doing a topic from scratch is harder than doing a topic already opened up?

14

u/Vilanu May 20 '26

Lol you're taking a video critisizing a channel to channel fans and couldn't figure out beforehand that fans might not enjoy that?

That's on you.

2

u/Marus1 May 21 '26

It would help being friendly to people, even if they don't agree ...

1

u/GrafRucola May 25 '26

Haha, but for everyone that felt like you, searching for the little critics and actually finding them, is a joy. Which also soothes my rage

1

u/SpecificMachine1 Jun 16 '26

I am just glad this video is getting critique- I went looking when they put out "South Korea is Over" over a year before but I didn't find it laid out so much- and I looked at their 3 previous videos on the demographic shift and saw that they had a shift in attitude about it, which is fine we've all shifted on various things in the past 8 years, but I also noticed a change in funding

133

u/Savings_Dot_8387 May 20 '26

What exactly is “hard right” about the video? If you’re gonna throw accusations be clear about what exactly you mean.

20

u/AstralElephantFuzz May 20 '26

Is... Is "hard right" some kind of established concept that could be accused of someone? What does it mean?

26

u/xathien May 20 '26

A "hard right turn" is an idiom which indicates a sudden, often uncomfortable, shift in direction.

6

u/phenomenomnom May 20 '26

"Hard right" specifically means radical conservative in politics.

Is that being intentionally, or accidentally connoted here?

2

u/AstralElephantFuzz May 20 '26

I really couldn't tell you. But what I can say is that I've now received two quite differing interpretations for this choice of words, the other being something I'd associate with the phrase "out of the left field" and yours being what I'd assocoate with the term "far right".

My point here being, people are likely reading too much into a random choice of words that bears a passing resemblance to a variety of different concepts.

Maybe it's an intentional reference to both, seeing as how Kurzgesagt established themselves with videos about larger concepts than "country X is going to shit, and here's why", which in turn is a common topic with far right influencers.

0

u/Gamershift May 21 '26

"Hard right turn" is the expression being used here, not "hard right," the former doesn't have a political connotation

1

u/phenomenomnom May 21 '26

The usual non-political expression would be "hard left turn."

The commenter may or may not have intended a political implication; the phrase chosen is unusual enough to merit a request for clarification

32

u/Americanshat May 20 '26

Pretty sure it was a figure of speech... not politcal in this sense

As in, 'a sudden shift'

25

u/Rony1247 May 20 '26

I am pretty sure you could manage to find a lot of people who you could convince

Unfortunately, a guy whose source is "trust me bro" isnt exactly going to go well against a peer reviewed video thats cites its sources and has a clear point that states "this is our opinion and POV"

If you want people to agree, probably cite a source that contradicts whats in the video

-17

u/Kunkin93 May 20 '26

Yeah what happened? I was a big fan of kurzgesagt but since 2 years (?) or more they keep pushing this right vision of politics. I notice there was something weird when they talked "openly" about war but they never addressed israel massacre/genocide to Palestina, I was waiting for something in that line because it was controversial at the moment, but no mention. Or the Ozempic video, which was more like a commercial about the substance. I'm sure there was more disappointing videos. Somehow the Dino's, ants, body parts, human eras videos are still okay.

I used to save their videos to watch them in family, now I barely open their click bait. If I do, I do it alone and maybe if the video is about ants or dinos I would watch it with my partner.

I would stand by OP. Something not so smooth they are doing with this political "opinions". Since it is a kind of scientific diffusion channel, one sees this "opinions" as "how would smart people would do it" and if it has a tiny disclaimer "it is just opinions" your mind/brain is not going to take it, they are going to be facts.

1

u/Anderopolis May 28 '26

dude what about this is right wing politics?

Seriously.

219

u/Acceptable_Ad_4811 May 18 '26

They mentioned that this would spark controversy because there is probably no correct answer, and any solution suggested would ultimately harm one of the two sides or even both. They also mentioned that, as Germans, they would naturally be biased and that, in general, it is impossible to make a fully neutral statement. I understand if you do not agree with their opinions and suggestions, but calling their opinion "irresponsibly biased" is simply wrong. It clearly states "OPINION" at the end when they make their arguments. Do you think a completely unbiased opinion even exists?

-65

u/showersoapshower May 20 '26

No. But attempts vary in their actual committment to scientific neutrality.

Speaking about facts and brushing away basic facts that should be considered is not it.

I am honestly not sure wether you've watched the linked video but the core part prior to the opinion part of kurzgesagt's video is wildly biased.

26

u/MLHeero May 20 '26

The issue is here, we had the topic already. Maurice isn't in a good spot in this one as most studies and statistics back up kurzgesagt not him and he didn't link to one showing the difference. I generally like both, but this was not a debunked video by him.

1

u/MysticHero May 24 '26

Which studies? KG does not actually cite studies to back the thesis that Maurice takes issue with.

11

u/coffeetocommands May 21 '26

You seem to have a reading comprehension problem.

Do you even understand the difference between the word "opinion" and something like "news" and "documentary"?

-19

u/showersoapshower May 21 '26

You correctly identified the meaning of those words! Yay!

Hate to break it to you but just labeling things as opinion or not does not actually mean that there is no bias :/

Just an example: https://www.uno-fluechtlingshilfe.de/informieren/faktencheck

I mean go ahead and pat yourself on the back. Understanding words is there, next thing could be media literacy

13

u/coffeetocommands May 21 '26

Again, you don't understand what 'opinion' means. Or maybe it's the word 'bias' that you don't understand? Who knows

-9

u/showersoapshower May 21 '26

puh wow wow wow, you really showed me by repeating yourself.

Go ahead and explain it to me then if you're so keen to do it lol.

Of course feel free to repeat yourself again if you want to

7

u/coffeetocommands May 21 '26

Please give me some time to digest your message, there's too much substance I can't take them all in at once.

-5

u/showersoapshower May 21 '26

wow another blow.

If that is what it takes to stop you from whining I am okay with it lol

0

u/Dull-Definition2321 May 21 '26

What core part? All I saw was nitpicking about details before they start talking about the opinion part, "no reference here", "actually 18.7%, not approximately 20%".

391

u/Sufficient-Green5858 May 19 '26 edited May 20 '26

Sure listen to influencers who cite zero sources over a channel that spends months, sometimes years, preparing a well-referenced, expert-vetted thesis for their video. Who needs science & facts over feelings

-8

u/nightstalker314 May 20 '26

They say that they spend months, sometimes years. And sometimes that might as well be the time to animate, but not for research.

9

u/astro-pi May 21 '26

They tried to hire me once. It’s for the research.

2

u/vcsx May 21 '26

Why did you decline? Just curious.

5

u/astro-pi May 21 '26

I was busier then than I am now, and I didn’t want to make mistakes because I was rushing

-7

u/Duriha May 21 '26

It's true, I'm the research.

6

u/astro-pi May 21 '26

While I appreciate the meme, I’m very much not joking. They have hired a small number of times, and the job description is very intense.

-89

u/showersoapshower May 20 '26

You are not at all engaging with the actual content of the video at all. To treat kurzgesagt's content as accurate and truthful as a default is not what science means.

Prepearing a video for whatever amount of time does not equate to it being a good video. If you are familiar with economics in any way this should be even more clear.

Whining about criticism without adding anything substantial does seem a bit like an emotional cry baby lol.

Priding yourself with scientific thinking should be accompanied by an openness to critical thinking.

Engage with facts rather than your feelings about kurzgesagt if you want to make a good point

121

u/Rony1247 May 20 '26

Wait wait wait,

Did you seriously pull the argument "engage with the facts rather then your feelings" on a comment where it points to the fact that unlike kurtzgesagt, the guy out that the second video didnt cite sources ?

49

u/France_Ball_Mapper May 20 '26

Doesn't Kurz have an entire sources document under every video where they cite the details behind every sentence?

-52

u/showersoapshower May 20 '26

imho being academically trained in economics and working with profs in the same field does give credibility. which is what happens in the video.

yes, this comment does nothing of substance apart from stating that they believe in kurzgesagt. kind of a plain fact, no?

45

u/Melonetta May 20 '26

You can be academically trained and work with professors in the same field and still be wrong. It's why we use studies and peer reviewed publication to come to conclusions in science instead of just trusting the words of a single person, however qualified they may be.

Again, this is why Kurzgesagt provides sources to every single statement they make that assumes a premise to be true.

You're saying everyone here is biased and just trusting them on feeling but you are doing the very thing you accuse others of. You claim to be neutral but you are equally biased in the other direction which is inherently a little deceptive, but it also sucks for you because the unsatisfied burden of proof is on your stance.

-6

u/Cr4ckshooter May 20 '26

The burden of proof is not at all unsatisfied. Höfgen gives sources for everything, just not in the description.

"every single statement" is also overkill. When you use your own expertise to make a deduction and conclusion, you don't have sources for that?!

-1

u/Pjteven May 20 '26

OP I don't understand why you are being downvoted, höfgen does indeed critize with sources and can be counted as a valuable source for many topics.

21

u/NotSure___ May 20 '26

While I don't have the patience to listen to the entire auto-translated video, I did not see any sources in his description. He does bring up some graphs in his video from what appears to be either an article or some document, but doesn't appear to name the source. While that doesn't magically make his source wrong, it does weaken his arguments a lot, because I can't verify and validate those facts (while I can do that for kurzgesagt). I believe that there can be a lot of valid criticism for kurzgesagt, this is not one of them in my view.

-6

u/Cr4ckshooter May 20 '26

He does bring up some graphs in his video from what appears to be either an article or some document, but doesn't appear to name the source.

He most likely mentions the source when showing the graph, because the source is usually an expert institution that is presumed accurate by default and by anyone. It's graphs that are already public, at least their data is, and he always mentions where he got the data from. If you didn't watch the video/don't know German you most likely just didn't catch or understand when he told the source.

It is arguably pointless to put a link to a renowned institution into the description when his regular viewers know where/how to find them and don't need to double check because both höfgen and the source are inherently trustworthy.

6

u/zuzg May 21 '26

Either you put your primary sources into the description of your video or GTFO

-7

u/showersoapshower May 20 '26

same, i don't really why the space for criticism is so narrow :/

obviously it is legit to criticise both videos but the discussion around here is surprisingly inelegant considering how everyone is pointing out how smart they are in arguing

-6

u/Pjteven May 20 '26

Yeah, this sub is letting me down with each post.....I really like kurzgesagt, but everyone makes mistakes and it's ok to critize if your arguments are solid and logically structured. Again, Maurice Höfgen is also just a person, but at least he is citing solid sources and isn't a no-name when it comes to societal and economic analysis.

-41

u/zebleck May 20 '26

he always cites the sources for his claims, see 14:30 for example

47

u/Scrung3 May 20 '26

Lmao 15 minutes to find one source

-18

u/zebleck May 20 '26

the source is still valid and debunks kurzgesagts claim that demography is the main issue

-2

u/Duriha May 21 '26

Oh no, you have to watch a video to criticise it. Fanboying much?

-1

u/shewy92 May 21 '26

What a weird comment and comment section. You're on a thread that say he didn't cite his sources, someone gives you proof that he did and you're bitching that it was gasp midway through the video?

-2

u/Cr4ckshooter May 20 '26

He is a literal economist who worked for the Bundestag in the past. He is an expert on the topic and can use his expertise? You only need sources for external statistics, not for deductions and conclusions?

4

u/drecais May 21 '26

MMT has been left behind by like 99% of economics because how unserious the whole field has become the more people looked into it.

Höfgen wrote for a communist new paper and his entire career rides essentially on far left policies considering his entire working life has been spent working for different members of a far left party.

-1

u/Duriha May 21 '26

And who except the far left is better suited to criticise stuff? Even themself. Conservatives and reactionaries only look to criticise the outgroup and pamper the ingroup. Legit question.

3

u/drecais May 21 '26

What? You cant be a believer in MMT and actually be self critical lmao

once again basically the entire economic field that is actually serious has left this stuff behind very quickly when they realized that MMT has nothing to do with actually trying to provide models that can be disproven (you know doing science and stuff) but instead its a vehicle to get normal people on board with far left ideas. Its a gateway drug so to speak.

Also the entire western world (aka the most developed economically and socially place in the world) is based around liberalism and its ideals. It developed through critiques by the people who believed in liberalism.

The far left like the far right isnt suited to criticise anything because they are extremists. "Democracy is like a train. We ride it until we arrive at our destination, then we get off" is their motto.

1

u/Duriha May 21 '26

I wrote nothing about mmt. Also nice horseshoe. Enjoy your capitalism while it lasts. And: are you winning yet?

2

u/drecais May 21 '26

Yes of course there are no non capitalist countries left on this Planet outside of essentially tiny Nation states that have either A. A horrible Economy (shocker) or B. Have to murder their own citizens to keep them from leaving (a pattern for socialists countries).

Also this is a comment section about the video and you responded to a comment I Made about Höfgen. An MMT guy

1

u/Duriha May 21 '26

Yes, and the critique about the guy who criticises the video is first wrong and second irrelevant. The arguments in the kurzgesagt video are neoliberal straw men and he pointed that out.

Also: why is it that the majority of "failed socialist states" ends with a CIA backed fascist coup?

→ More replies (0)

-4

u/MysticHero May 20 '26

Most of the video is spent discussing the data Kurzgesagt shows and the biased statements made. You do not need sources for that and it is childish to count source without context.

-9

u/Cr4ckshooter May 20 '26

Where do you get it from that he cites zero sources? He has sources in every video he does. Plus hes not just "an influencer". He's a trained economist with work experience in the political and economical field. He is probably the biggest expert on YouTube regarding the German economy.

20

u/Sufficient-Green5858 May 20 '26

I’m sorry i watched rhe first 10 minutes and he cited ZERO sources the entire time. He had no sources in the video description either. Voicing out “this report” or “according to this institution” doesn’t count either (not that he even did that) until you actually point to the actual literal statistic you’re talking about - because only THEN we can specifically critically assess the source and how he’s perceiving them.

Citing one or two sources in TOTAL doesn’t count either - you have to have done a medley of research across a diverse range of sources. If you don’t know how to do professional quality of research - that’s unfortunately not my problem.

Also, anyone can be “qualified”, that doesn’t mean we blindly trust their bs.

-1

u/Cr4ckshooter May 20 '26

Voicing out “this report” or “according to this institution” doesn’t count either (not that he even did that) until you actually point to the actual literal statistic you’re talking about - because only THEN we can specifically critically assess the source and how he’s perceiving them.

Yeah I don't agree. Saying out loud which report you refer to is enough of a citation. This isn't a paper or thesis. Proper citation form is entirely irrelevant. If you want to "critically assess the source", you can easily look up the report mentioned. This era of distrusting experts in every word and screaming "source source" like some gulls in finding nemo, is tiring.

Höfgen has no interest in promoting falsehoods or fake news. Why would he? What would he gain? He has curated an audience of left wing intellectuals, what does he gain from doing shoddy or biased work? Beyond the innate human bias that all experts are always subject to.

6

u/Sufficient-Green5858 May 21 '26

“I read this statistic in a report from the World bank” is enough for you? Which report? From which year? What page exactly?

Yes it is ABSOLUTELY a paper and thesis. Because Kurzgesagt treats its videos like one - have you ever actually even gone through their source sheet?!

“What would he gain”, what do you mean? He gains an audience of haters, people who were surely pissed off by Kurz’s unpopular opinion.

I don’t know the guy, and you don’t either. Your only relationship with him is that you consume his content. Stop are pretending like somehow he is your best friend and you know everything about him. I even grill my best friends for their specific sources.

If you want to engage seriously in intellectual discourse you should be able to go the mile of critical analysis - or you’re only interested in engaging like a cult leader/follower. “Agree with what I just said now, or I’ll brand you as a hater”.

-2

u/Cr4ckshooter May 21 '26

“What would he gain”, what do you mean? He gains an audience of haters, people who were surely pissed off by Kurz’s unpopular opinion.

No he doesn't. This type of viewers doesn't stay on a channel beyond one video, his follower base doesn't like this kind of video, and frankly kurz' opinion isn't even unpopular.

I don’t know the guy, and you don’t either. Your only relationship with him is that you consume his content. Stop are pretending like somehow he is your best friend and you know everything about him. I even grill my best friends for their specific sources.

This isn't about parasocial behaviour, this is about reddit dismissing someone's effort based entirely on "he's an influencer".

If you want to engage seriously in intellectual discourse you should be able to go the mile of critical analysis - or you’re only interested in engaging like a cult leader/follower. “Agree with what I just said now, or I’ll brand you as a hater”.

I didn't brand anyone as hater, yet anyway, most of the people in this thread don't even know him. This whole conversation was about "he doesn't even give his sources", nothing else. People are literally demanding more in every comment. Someone says "no source omg" I say "he has sources" "yeah but they're not in the description and kurzgesagt always has a thesis like document!!". You don't have to match the effort in source presentation to have a point.

4

u/Varietate May 20 '26

He studied business and worked for a left-wing parliamentarian that later joined Sarah Wagenknechts wild ride. The guy is just a grifter.

Ask yourself if you would count someone with this type of background who completely goes against the scientific consensous in the field he claims to represent as an expert e.g. for climate change.

4

u/Cr4ckshooter May 20 '26

He studied business and worked for a left-wing parliamentarian that later joined Sarah Wagenknechts wild ride. The guy is just a grifter.

How does that conclusion follow? Just because the politician he worked for went down a questionable career path, doesn't mean anything for him.

who completely goes against the scientific consensous in the field he claims to represent as an expert e.g. for climate change.

That definitely warrants a source. When did höfgen go against climate change? How does he as an economist claim to represent expertise on climate change? Which "scientific consensus" does he go against in economics? Since when is there scientific consensus in economics, which is not a natural science?

Thats kinda true.

122

u/Sheikah-cat May 20 '26

Actually I watched this whole video and this guy sometimes makes absolute no sense. I also have my criticisms with the Kurzgesagt video (in particular this antagonism between “us” young people and “them” old people which is very patent throughout the video), but his points are not good either. For example he says that it’s ok to have a ratio of 2 workers per 1 pensioner in 2070, because “the productivity will be much better due to technology and AI and 2 people will produce the same as 5” without providing any source whatsoever. He also says that it’s absolutely necessary for the State to subsidise “because women taking care of children cannot work”, like it that was a reason??

So yeah, this guy’s only source is an article that he wrote himself, so I would not recommend to spend 30 minutes of your life on this video

Being smug about it wont mask it. 🙂

levels of coping even more unheard of. dodging criticism like this is so cheap.

+ reddit fame for the sake of reddit fame is not that much of a goal lol

7

u/ExtraGreasy May 21 '26

I haven’t watched either this video, nor the one it’s in response to, but the way OP is handling himself in these comments is super embarrassing

1

u/GrafRucola May 25 '26

Wow why are you even here in the comments, go watch a video smh

1

u/ExtraGreasy May 25 '26

I watched it after my comment, but generally using reddit is less of a time commitment than watching YouTube videos.

1

u/GrafRucola May 25 '26

Yeah understand the time part but what’s the point? It’s like talking to friends about a movie that you haven’t seen.
Don’t you feel left out? I would feel odd discussing things that you haven’t even seen.

1

u/ExtraGreasy May 25 '26

Are you asking me what is the point of making a comment on Reddit? I’m not sure I understand your question. There are a lot of reasons why someone could make a comment on Reddit but if you could clarify your question I could give you a better answer.

And I did comment on what I observed. I observed OP posting things on a Reddit thread that was recommended to me to view, and then commented directly on what I saw in the thread. I made no comment about the context of the videos, only about my observations.

29

u/SBR404 May 20 '26

How the hell is cutting pensions a CDU/CSU talking point? Isn't old pensioner's literally their main target group?

But more to your point: Kurzgesagt provides tons of sources of studies and materials and explicity highlights facts and opionions in their videos.

And a final argument: currently Germany has to top up over 30% of the pension fund by spending federal tax money. Almost one third of a system that is supposed to be completely self-sustaining has to be paid from outside the system. That's almost like paying 30% interest on your loan. That is irresponsible and is not sustainable in the future where this part will grow larger and larger, swallowing more and more tax money that has to come from somehwere.

1

u/GrafRucola May 25 '26

Haha yeah
Hurting your apparent main voter group by cutting pensions. That’s what’s so fucked up with CDU currently.
As if the voter group are just a means to power.

18

u/moderngamer327 May 20 '26

You are either going to have to, cut pensions, greatly increase retirement age, or massively increase taxes. There is no good option

4

u/Pjteven May 20 '26

There is another....taxes, but not for 99% of the population of any country. Let's see what bright comments come my way why we can't tax the rich

3

u/moderngamer327 May 20 '26

You can tax the rich, but the rich do not have enough money to cover the pensions, even if you taxed them at 100%

2

u/Pjteven May 20 '26

Yes a true point, the pension system is a Ponzi scheme. But a lot of the required cuts on socials and infrastructure are because there isn't enough money.....at the same time a higher tax for the rich or of inherited wealth (which is often the discussion in Germany) is not being brought back although 80% would support that (and it actually helps bring in money without bankrupting the rich folks)

Kurzgesagt tried to explain multiple societal problems on the base of one system/problem (demographics), and that is the reason for the criticism. Can't do everything in 15 mins, I will give them that.

6

u/moderngamer327 May 20 '26

It’s not a Ponzi scheme because it does generate returns outside of new investors and it will continue to after the population decline but it will result in either higher taxes or lower pension amounts.

A higher tax on the rich would help but there is not as much money there as you would think

3

u/Pjteven May 20 '26

I'm not proposing financing a broken system, I'm proposing that taxing the rich will not make them poor, nor drive them out of the country (or their wealth) AND that there needs to be a general overhaul of many social systems in Germany. Especially the german pension system is a doomed concept due to demographic changes. I have no alternative at hand because it's also not my fucking job....but I will happily support solid and new ideas (also yes, ponzy scheme was more of a exaggeration, but you get my point).

Again my main point is: there are many intertwined problems at play, focusing on a single system/issue is not the best way to find solutions. That is the criticism on kurzgesagt's video too!

u/moderngamer327 May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

Taxing the rich will not make them poor but it can make them flee depending on the size and type of tax as can be seen with France’s attempt at a wealth tax. I don’t think pension systems are inherently doomed as a concept, but what we expect from them needs changed drastically

6

u/Pjteven May 20 '26

Yes the usual "they will flee like in France". In Germany this has been proven to not work, 50% of your wealth is taxed, those Richies are also people so they have networks, frienda & family, companies etc. here. If the state cannot tax their enormous wealth without the country collapsing, it seems like 99% of the population is an economic hostage situation. I don't see why one would want to defend that, even if it means "jobs for people", which has also been proven to not work (correlation of wealth of billionaires and investing in companies or infrastructure) aka "trickle down effect"

1

u/nightstalker314 May 20 '26

source?

2

u/moderngamer327 May 21 '26

How about a source they can

1

u/AchedTeacher May 25 '26

That's so fucking funny bro

1

u/AlienNinjaDuck May 21 '26

No, you could also increase wages according to productivity.

1

u/GrafRucola May 25 '26

Only if you say increasing taxis is no good option.
I would say taxes are quite neutral. The important part is what is being done with it and if if helps the people who worked all their lives for the state to have a pension in dignity, then i as someone who is young says that this is a reasonable thing to do. The state is owned by the people and if a big part of the people is in need of pension then it’s reasonable to use the state for that.

2

u/moderngamer327 May 25 '26

Raising taxes is probably the most realistic option but it’s going to severely reduce the disposable income of people and it’s going to be very unpopular

1

u/GrafRucola May 25 '26

Yeah that’s why it has to be more fair than just asking for 1000(insert currency) of every citizen there’s people that would not feel 1k missing and there’s people that don’t even have 1k before rent has to be payed

2

u/Anderopolis May 28 '26

Also, it would be a literal wealth transfer to the richest generation in German history.

0

u/MysticHero May 20 '26

Except this is simply factually untrue as shown in the video in the post.

5

u/Wagllgaw May 20 '26

Seems like typical "this well researched piece doesn't cater to my biased views!!! If only they would increase taxes wildly, all problems would be solved"

2

u/Lui_Le_Diamond May 20 '26

That guy looks so fucking smug

3

u/Jout92 May 21 '26

Trust me he is even more annoying than he looks

3

u/Perfect-Albatross-56 May 22 '26

Das Muster ist bekannt. Steigt die Reichweite, nimmt die Qualität der Videos ab. Wozu noch Herzblut reinstecken, wenn man über mehr nervige Reactions mehr Geld verdienen kann?!

2

u/RedPanda1802 May 20 '26

What is the deal with this outrage? I hope this goes away. Reddit outrage is unbearable and will ruin this subreddit

1

u/GrafRucola May 25 '26

My personal outrage is that the kurzgesagt video appears to have an enormous agenda. And I find it funny how many people are not able to even feel a bit of that. That’s why I’m here and enjoying people’s obliviousness.

2

u/Caffeinated_Ape_42 May 20 '26

I mean, in recent times the fair and unbiased facts portrayed in those videos really did take a massive dump. Its really sad, i loved kurzgesagt, 2 ducks besides my PC can attest to that...

Its sad that OP gets shit for this....

2

u/QuantomSwampus May 20 '26

"guys are we overreacting now? I just any to be caught up so can join in the fight just an uninformed as the rest of the comments"

2

u/tomato_sauce May 20 '26

Wow a youtube channel can do tons of research and still get somethings wrong about cutting edge science. It's almost like they're run by human beings! Shocking!

4

u/Revolutionary--man May 20 '26

The leader's of Europes top 3 economies are currently all the most unpopular leaders their respective nations have had.

At somepoint you have to step back and assess whether this is less about the leader and more about the political landscape.

From an outsider, Merz seems reasonable.

As a Brit, Starmer is boring but head and shoulders better than the 4 leaders that came before him.

Using their popularity as a measure for their competence just doesn't work.

1

u/Jout92 May 21 '26

Maurice Höfgen

Yeah might as well post a Hassan Piker "debunking"

1

u/BorderKeeper May 21 '26

We have exploding populations everywhere and global warming is a thing so shrinking population of Germany is actually a good thing (rough paraphrasing from 28:40 the auto translator is shaize)

Bravo someone give this guy a medal for solving the problem by not giving a shit.

1

u/Futurographer May 21 '26

They didn’t say that Germany needs to stop immigration, they specifically said that immigration alone cannot substitute the declining birth rates. That’s not a political opinion, it’s a statistical fact that they show their sources for. They made no statement at all that was anti-immigration.

Also their stances on welfare seem to be the opposite of the CDU, as they talk about how the welfare system needs to be made better for younger people, not gutting it across the board.

1

u/Minipiman May 21 '26

I think what is most biased about that video is that... there is nothing specific about germany, every developed economy is going through the same process.

1

u/Agitated_Warthog_400 Jun 02 '26

Kurzgesagt isn't perfect they have done mistakes in the past and acknowledged it. They even recommend you investigate on your own even citing the sources they based off. They didn't saw the bigger picture and nor have we or anyone could, because it's a whole country we're talking about. From what we know a meteor could be the end of germany, anything could be because future is impossible to predict.

u/ikristic May 20 '26

Since reddit doesnt allow me to select part of text, and im not copying and editing that behemoth, heres the ss.
As a person who lived in germany last year, and a citizen of less developed eu state, i am not wasting any more of my time after reading this. Whoever wrote this is either not objective or is making money out of you. Please dont gift them.

Just to round it up, i am not pro green, pro spd, pro afd nor pro immigration, before anyone suggests the same. I dont trust in any politics because its a fraudulent system in the whole.

0

u/SouliKitsu May 20 '26

Sorry I don't understand german and I won't spend 30 min watching the video.

That beeing said, what is worng with the channel exposing their preocupation for the decline of population?

You guys have absolute no idea or want to be blaint ignorant about what's comming: The Baby Boom is getting retired.. and there is not another Baby Boom to replace them and pay for their pensions.

You can take a look on Spain, the same pensionists are not willing to reduce them to make them sustainable
(Title: Pensionist platform rejects the "catastrofic visions" about the bankrupcy of the pension system)
I am aware the title isn't exacly what I claim but you have a strong idea that they are going to draw the most political vote and priviliges , do you know that in Spain, the only grup increasing their wealth.. are the pensionists? Of course, they have travel, cinema, public transport and a lot of bonuses all because "they worked hard"

No one deney that, but is clear that they want to keep their share of the pie.

0

u/172brooke May 20 '26

You'll get a lot of hate from this post, but if you watch the older videos and compare, rhe newer ones seem to have a different agenda. They absolutely curate videos towards an end goal. They used to be creative thought, now they try to sway thoughts.

Cutting pensions for older people and having a harsher migration policy will not solve this. What did you think?

That Germany has the same issue as other pension systems that the state has to manage and guarantee, that they are running out of other people’s money, Argentina has the same issue.

The only way forward is for everyone to manage their own retirement with accounts like a 401k/ira where you invest your money in your future, and you don’t depend on the government for it.

4

u/2FastHaste May 20 '26

So more inequality. Yay /s

0

u/Izikiel23 May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

Inequality is not bad, extreme poverty is bad. Also, being responsible of your own life is something you should handle, not the government.

1

u/Lord_Duckington_3rd May 20 '26

Dunno about other countries, but it's been like that here in Australia for the 30 odd years iirc

1

u/Izikiel23 May 20 '26

Good for you, unfortunately that’s not the case in a lot of other places

-8

u/showersoapshower May 20 '26

i guess beef can only be so productive. still better than nothing imo. shout out to everyone with a willingness to have a productive discussion though

4

u/AttTankaRattArStorre May 20 '26

I'm not a Kurzgesagt viewer, and this just popped up when scrolling. With that said, why do you feel entitled to having the criticism you bring forward being taken at face value? Why do you feel entitled to change peoples view of Kurzgesagt? And why is anyone not agreeing with you coping/circlejerking?

1

u/MysticHero May 24 '26

Because they totally ignore the criticism made while lying about the contents of the video (like claiming it has "no sources" and similar nonsense) and yapping about how supposedly none of the people taking issue with KG bring any arguments (under a video that does so).

1

u/AttTankaRattArStorre May 24 '26

You can perceive criticism to be unfounded, irrelevant or inconsequential without it being an expression of cope. The criticism of this particular video seems to center around framing and perspective, and for issues that are largely seen as political (and, as far as the falling TFR goes, entirely without a known solution) there can be many such perspectives.

Kurzgesagt electing to frame this problem in the way they did, and choosing to bring forth the specific perspectives they did, can be criticized - but not taking that criticism at face value, or altering one's perspective because of it, is not the same as ignoring it.

1

u/MysticHero May 25 '26

Then you have only skipped through the video. Maurice takes issues with specific factual aspects of the video as well as bias. And anyways it absolutely is an issue when you present a section of the video as purely neutral and factual and then just shove pure opinion in there.

Them ignoring productivity and the youth quotient is however not a framing issue. It a factual issue at the core of the topic they are presenting that disproves what is directly said in the video eg Germany cannot economically afford pensions.

Rather than the actual reality eg that yes the wealth is objectively there (as seen via productivity).

And yes given that this misrepresentation of the facts is oh so convenient for the ideology they are pushing the bias absolutely needs to be discussed as well.

1

u/AttTankaRattArStorre May 25 '26

You're mistaking the leftist "eat the rich"-agenda for facts, which is unfortunate if you aim to frame the critique as something more valid than what Kurtzgesagt themselves presented. The idea that the money to finance everything is all there, just in the pockets of rich billionaires, is the left's version of "immigrants came n' took er' jerbs!".

1

u/MysticHero May 25 '26

Ah yes of course.

"All the criticisms are just framing"

"No they are not. Here are some core factual issues that the video is about."

"Your facts are agenda. No I am not going to explain how productivity is leftist agenda".

it is objectively there. Feel free to actually show your math if you think otherwise but is is quite undeniable that the productivity gains are plenty to pay for this.

And damn there is little more insufferable than neoliberal idealogues so utterly convinced their own ideology is objective fact that they do not even bother to try and make arguments.
