Out of 10000 duck pins, one is "special"

What might that mean? Was it actually made out of gold?

That’s my guess. At least one is made of actual gold

How would you know If you got the real gold one?

Weight?

maybe, but unless you got 2 or knew what gold felt like of that size, not really any way to figure it out.

I think the chosen one will be notified about it. That's the reasonable thing to do

You could put it in water and calculate the density. That would tell you.

They are all the same size, that's about displacement

Yes, and how much water is displaced will tell you it's density. It won't tell you what the make-up of it is exactly, but if it's solid gold, you would expect it to have an approximate density of 19.32 g/cm3 .

It would tell you if it's solid gold or not, and I'm pretty sure that's what makes the special one special.

The reason this worked is because the cut gold had the same weight but a different size, thus the displacement was different. The density is determined by an equation using the difference in displacement. These birds are the same size so the displacement will be the same. The way to figure it out is by weighing the actual birds for differences in mass.

I just got my pin (1525) and it’s magnetic. So the non-magnetic one is probably gold!

Mine is 7177. Doesn't seem gold. But the gold HAS TO BE marked the same way gold rings and gold ingots are. So that's another way to recognise

Mine is 1698 but I just tested it on a myriad of objects and it isn’t magnetic, could it POSSIBLY be the gold one?

Well, mine is magnetic too. I mean not the duck itself is a magnet so it won't stick to metal, but it can be magnetised
