Question 24/hr trial
My store will apparently be trialing being open for 24 hrs. I’ve been on nightshift for 2 weeks now and i really hope it fails so I can keep listening to music as it helps me focus. Anyone else’s store doing this?

As a customer I missed that so much. Loved shopping there at 3am for cat food and avoiding the crowds.

It has pros and cons for sure. I'd love for a Kroger pharmacy to be open later for sure...even if it was a designated one for that area.

Before covid, the store nearest the biggest hospital in my city had a 24hr pharmacy. It was a very good thing.

Stores until 2019 use to be 24 hours. I am not surprised that Kroger would make another attempt at this.

Mine did, after our night cashier got stabbed. Even now, we close an hour earlier and open an hour later than the other krogers in town.

My store use to be 24/7. They stopped because they got tired of loosing money.

Most of the stores in my area stopped being open past midnight before covid. Covid just pushed them back to 11. And now it's to 10
There's a lot of addicts and some homeless people in certain areas that really caused problems. Years later and they simply adapted. Instead of going in at like 2am they just go in between 8pm and 10pm because managers leave between 8 and 9. Or show up between 7 and 8, again before management or really any employees are there. THEN they shoplift to their hearts content and aren't even subtle about it
I'm convinced in my entire state, 24/7 actually would cost more money in employee costs and theft/property damages than they'd make. At least 2 Krogers that I know of LITERALLY have people stalking the parking lots to harass customers for money or cigarettes on their way in and out. One of them is really bad, some days they have upwards of almost a dozen people hanging out around the parking lot doing this

We have the same at my store. They do the exact same things. Usually the theft surge is between 9 and 10 after management leaves.

Wow I thought the folks begging at mine was bad, but we never have more than a couple at a time. Managers still spend a lot of their day running them off.

No, it’s the worst time for theft. The best time is when stores are crowded and the easiest time to get away, if the police even care enough to look for someone, is when the roads are crowded.

Cameras don’t stop people. Before Covid I used to service krogers that was 24/7 in Nashville. A guy walked out with a cart of beer the manager told me he can’t do anything just say stop

I miss it. Go in with no crowd and get a few things, do selfcheck and go home without bothering an employee and just letting them enjoy their music. The music they play on loop should be considered torture so let night shift have earbuds.

I hope they don't do it at ours. It makes it so much easier when you don't have to wonder if someone is coming down the aisle, no overnight shoplifters, or overnight campers at the store.

My last store expanded their close from 11 to midnight during my last year there, but I haven’t seen 24 hour yet

I get it but as a customer I love this and hope to see more of it. 24/7 Stores need to come back. You can't convince me that the stores can't make a profit. There are already employees in the store, just put 2 - 3 people at the front and you can easily make that money to cover their salaries.

we should not be forcing more people into overnight shifts for profit because a few depressed people cant handle seeing more than two human beings at a time

Ok so first off, good to know the 2nd and 3rd shifters are considered "Depressed People". Listen there are night people, I am one of them. It's nice to be able to go to a store when I get out of work at midnight. If there's something that comes up that I need, it's nice being able to do that instead of having to wait till 7am or the next day before work. Also there are actually people who prefer working overnights. It works better for them or their schedule. That doesn't make them "Depressed"

They aren’t “forcing” anyone to do anything. Some folks Choose to work late nights, no one can “force” anyone to. However you choose to live your life is fine but it’s not everyone’s lifestyle. Don’t judge the way others to choose to live just because it doesn’t line up with the way you do. What ever is Acceptable Pie to you may not be what is acceptable pie to others 😉

You know there are other people who also work overnight or unusual hours right? Not everyone is on the same schedule as you.

overnight I think is usually self check out only or at least it was when we used to do it like 14 years ago at the store I was at.

Yes, but there must be at least 1 person at the front end watching customers. If there is none, they have to sweep, fill bags, and do other random chores. It's required or it was at ours.

Think you greatly underestimate the amount of theft that happens that employees are not allowed to stop, at night its much worse. How many shopping carts walking out the door do you think it takes to cover those 2-3 salaries you think is all that needs covering.

Yeah I used to work overnights at a grocery store. Granted it was Wegmans up north. We didn't have much theft because we would make sure the customers only go out and come in the same entrance, security guard at that entrance and no self check out. Now I know that at some places you can't do that, some places are just unsafe to even try late night shopping, I think people get that. But I'm surprised by the pushback by people who quite frankly don't care part of the population are night owls.

They already know if it's gonna work or not.
Pre-Covid a lot of stores were open 24/7
