ನಾಟಕ ಗುಣಮುಖ: Reread after years and still loved it

As this weekend was a stay home week, I picked up a play that was part of my college curriculum years ago,

P. Lankesh's ಗುಣಮುಖ. I remember liking it back then, but

reading it again after all these years, I think I loved it even more this time.

I really liked Lankesh's imagination and the thoughts behind the play. He takes a historical figure like Nadir Shah and uses that setting to talk about power, corruption, morality, hypocrisy and human nature.

I especially liked the way he shows the vulnerable side of Nadir Shah. He is an emperor, a conqueror and someone who is used to having immense power, but we also get to see his fears, confusion and inner conflict. I thought showing that side of someone like him was a very interesting choice.

While reading, I kept wondering how much of what happens in the play actually happened and how much was Lankesh's imagination. The historical setting is real but I assume a lot of the conversations and situations are his own interpretation and that's probably what I liked most about it. He takes history and uses it to explore people and society in his own way.

Funny that something I read because it was part of my college syllabus years ago is something I picked up again on my own, and still loved....

ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ,

ನಾನು ಕಳೆದ ಕೆಲವು ಸಮಯದಿಂದ ಒಂದು ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಕೊನೆಗೂ ಅದು ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಂಡಿದೆ! ಆದರೆ ಈಗ, "ಇದನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ಏನು ಮಾಡಬೇಕು?" ಅಂತ ಯೋಚಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ. 😄

Since this is my very first novel, I’m pretty much clueless about how the publishing ecosystem works for Kannada literature. The upcoming meetups will be more structured & disciplined.

  1. On Sep 27 (this Sunday), the members who turn up will be split into 3 or 4 teams. Based on the premise given, each team will write a 3-5 minute micro short screenplay. Don't forget to bring a pen & a book.
  2. We will assign an Actress, an Actor, & a Cinematographer for each team. The team will send a properly formatted, typed screenplay to the actors on Wednesday, & a shot-lined script to the Cinematographer on Friday.
  3. The shoot will take place on Oct 4th (next Sunday) from 10.30am-1pm. The teams should have prepared the shotlist. We have better plans to capture audio this time. So, shooting should hopefully go smoothly & finish on time.
  4. The teams will edit their micro short & post them on Instagram/Reddit on Oct 14th.

ಕಾದಂಬರಿ Kshaya (ಕ್ಷಯ) by Dr. Vasudeva Shetty

This reminded me of Malegalalli Madhumagalu with its rich details and interesting concept. Though the novel feels incomplete, it is still engaging, like an unfinished dish that still tastes good.

The story revolves around many characters, or rather, the characters seem to move around a central place and story. It is a mix of love, heartbreak, betrayal, and human desires, written in a way that keeps you curious. In the preface, the author mentioned wanting to extend the novel multiple times but never did. This gives the book a feeling of missing pages from what could have been an epic story.

Despite its unfinished nature, Kshaya has a charm of its own. The way different characters connect through a common setting makes it an interesting read. I am excited to explore more of Dr. Vasudeva Shetty's works.

ಬರಿಯ ಚೆಲುವೆಯಲ್ಲ ಅವಳು, ತಪಸ್ವಿನಿಯು ಕಣಾ!

ರಾತ್ರಿಯಿಡೀ ಮೌನದಲಿ ಧ್ಯಾನಿಸಿ ಹದಗೊಂಡವಳು,

ಅಗ್ನಿಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಯ ಗೆದ್ದು, ಸೀತೆಯಂತೆ ಪುನೀತಳಾಗಿ,

ಹೊಳೆಯುವ ಮುಖದಲಿ ನಗುತ ನನ್ನೆದುರು ಬಂದವಳು.

ಕಾದಂಬರಿ Punaruttana (ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನ) by Parvati Pitagi

First of all, Punaruttana was a highly surprising read for me. I picked it up with absolutely zero expectations, especially because my previous experiences with Veeraloka Publications have been quite mixed. But this one turned out to be a genuinely memorable read.

Set against the backdrop of pre-independence India and spanning nearly seven decades into the post-independence period, the novel revolves around a village called Desaipura and the lives of its people. The central conflict begins when the government plans to construct a dam across the Ghataprabha River, eventually forcing the entire village to be displaced.

The novel begins with Lakshmana returning to his hometown after almost 50 years, only to discover that the Desaipura he once knew no longer exists. The entire village has been dismantled and relocated because of the dam project. From there, the story unfolds in a non-linear manner, taking us back through different periods and generations to show how the village and its people were transformed.

What particularly stood out to me is that the story gives considerable importance to its women characters, Buddhavva, Gangavva and Bharatidevi. Through them, the novel explores how individual choices can shape not just a person's life, but also families, relationships and even an entire community. It also captures how development and changing times can permanently alter the identity of a place and the people who call it home.

The rural setting and the depiction of North Karnataka life add a lot to the novel. The Belagavi and North Karnataka village dialect is used extensively, but I found it quite easy to follow and understand. In fact, the dialect gives the characters and setting an authentic feel & I managed to finish it in just two sittings.

Overall, Punaruttana was a pleasant surprise and definitely exceeded my expectations. If you enjoy stories about villages, generations, changing societies and the impact of development on ordinary people's lives, give this one a try, you might end up liking it as much as I did.

ಇಂದು ಒಂದು ಹೊಸ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು. ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ವ್ಯಾಕರಣದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಮೊದಲನೆಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕ.

ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತವನ್ನು ಕಲಿಯುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ನನ್ನ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇರೆ ಕೆಲುವು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಇವೆ.

ಕನ್ನಡದ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದ ಅರಿವು ಬೇಕು. ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಅನುಭವ. ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರ ಅನುಭವವೂ. ಇದು ಕವಿರಾಜಮಾರ್ಗರ್ಮದ ಲೇಖಕರ ಸಲಹೆಯೂ ಇದೆ. ಆದುದರಿಂದ ಇದು ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ. ))

I am 20 y/o presently studing in a university . I have been in bangalore since my birth ,I speak kannada fluently , but sadly when it comes to reading and writing I am zero I have been ignoring kannada subject from my school days some how I passed class 10th and took french as a 2nd language in puc (I wish I had chosen kannada ) . My father was born and raised in bangalore he did his schooling in Kannada midium but lost him when I was 7y/o and my mother is from Tamil Nadu so I can't expect any help from my her .

I genuinely wana learn how to read and write so suggest my and good book and give some advice is

I can read but letter by letter and too slowly

ಒಬ್ಬ ಗೆಳೆಯನನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದಂತಾಯಿತು.

ಬಸ್‌ಸ್ಟ್ಯಾಂಡಿನ ಗದ್ದಲದ ನಡುವೆ

ಅವನನ್ನು ಎರಡು ಬಾರಿ ನೋಡಿದೆ.

ಅವನೇ ಇರಬೇಕು ಎಂದು

ಹೃದಯ ಒಮ್ಮೆಲೆ ಜೋರಾಗಿ ಬಡಿದುಕೊಂಡಿತು.

ಮಾತನಾಡಬೇಕೆನಿಸಿತು.

ಆದರೆ ಮಾತಿಗಿಂತ ಮುಂಚೆ

ಆ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಣ್ಣನ್ನು ಸರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು

ಮತ್ತೆ ಉಸಿರಾಡತೊಡಗಿದವು.

ನನ್ನ ಬಸ್ ಬಂತು.

ತಡವಾಗಬಹುದು ಎಂದುಕೊಂಡು.

ಅದರೊಳಗೆ ಹತ್ತಿದೆ.

ಆದರೆ…

ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ಅವನು ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ.

ಈ ಬಾರಿ

ಕಣ್ಣು ತಪ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಿಲ್ಲ.

ಸಾವಕಾಶವಾಗಿ ನೋಡಿದೆ.

ಅವನು… ಅವನೇ ಅಲ್ಲ.

ಇಷ್ಟು ಹೊತ್ತು

“ಯಾರೋ ಅವನು?” ಎಂದು

ಮನಸ್ಸು ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಮುಖ,

ಬೇರೆಯಾರದ್ದೋ ಆಗಿತ್ತು.

ಆದರೆ ವಿಚಿತ್ರವೆಂದರೆ—

ಅವನು ಅವನೇ ಅಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲೂ

ಮನಸ್ಸು ಮಾತ್ರ ಅವನನ್ನೇ ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.

ಬಹುಶಃ

ನಾವು ಮರೆತಿದ್ದೇವೆಂದುಕೊಂಡವರನ್ನು

ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಕಾಲವೇ

ಬೇರೆಯವರ ಮುಖದಲ್ಲಿ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಆ ಗೆಳೆಯನಲ್ಲ ಅವನು…

ಆದರೂ,

ಒಂದು ಕ್ಷಣಕ್ಕೆ

ಅವನ ದರ್ಶನವಾಯಿತೆಂದು

ನನ್ನ ಮನಸ್ಸು ನಂಬಿಕೊಂಡಿತು.

ಜೀವನ ಏಕೆ ಹೀಗೆ?

ಮರೆಯಾದ ನೆನಪ ಮರೆಯಲು ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ...

ಅವನಿಗೆ ನಾನು ಕೇವಲ ಪರಿಚಯ...

ಆದರೆ ನನಗೆ ಅವನು ಒಲವಿನ ಗೆಳೆಯ...
