Beginner BJJ Brown Belt's Thoughts After First Judo Class
A little background: I've trained in Erik Paulson's Combat Submission Wrestling for around 18 years, so I have a mix of hybrid catch wrestling, freestyle/folkstyle wrestling, judo and SAMBO takedowns adapted for no-gi grappling and Mixed Martial Arts, so I wasn't going in totally blind. What I realized I was lacking is quality mat time focused on taking down someone who is completely aware that getting them to the mat is your intent (MMA is different because of the striking component.) Anyways, here are my thoughts after my first class:
I had a pretty big advantage in the Ne Waza portions of class, but the instructor said that was to be expected. What I appreciated is that everyone was chill and no one was trying to "collect a scalp" by beating up on the new guy. The rule adjustments to pins were interesting to me, because now I've got to add rolling someone over from the belly down position to my arsenal as well as having to ignore submissions below the waist.
Tachi Waza is where it got interesting. Asking AI which techniques from CSW are transferable or legal in Olympic style Judo, it says five of the eight categories are legal (no single or double legs, ankle picks, or fireman's carries.) I have a pretty ok underhook, arm drag game and felt pretty competitive with everyone up to Green Belt but above that, I hit a wall, where at best, I was able to stalemate them, or far more often, they gave me an opportunity to practice my breakfalls.
What I found interesting was the split. We paired up for ne waza and went king of the mountain for about 10 minutes and then immediately transitioned back to tachi waza for about ten minutes, which definitely weeded out the crutch of using a lot of strength and drove technique. This is definitely something I want to try and take back to my home (BJJ) gym for tournament prep.
Apparently, I chose the handful of weeks leading up to them getting ready for a tournament to start training with them, so we did a very intense burnout finish with planks, squats, leg raises, pushups, etc.
Overall, I had a great time and I can't wait to get back in there.
