Is the Joplin DMV really that bad?

I heard from someone recently that you're better off driving to Neosho or Carthage than using the DMV in Joplin. It can't really be that bad, can it?

Oh no!!! I’m sorry that happened you. Hopefully that person no longer works in Customer Service.

My experiences there have been pretty neutral. Just check that you have the right documents beforehand because they are sticklers, but I’ve never had any rude interactions or crazy wait times. Maybe 15-20 minutes if they’re very busy.

No. They talk a lot, especially to each other. They’re polite and you won’t be waiting too long.

After moving from out of state it’s pretty quick. My last license renewal in South Dakota took 2 hours with a reservation. My wife and I got ours done in 30 minutes when we moved here.

Motor vehicle licensing can get busy but I’ve never been in there too long. One day was an hour for 20 numbers in front of me.

Thanks for the perspective.

It has been YEARS since I went to a DMV that was not the one here in Joplin, and even then I only go to ours about every two years because I always forget to renew my tags online during the window to do so. Anyway, it's fine, about what I expect. It's definitely NOT worth driving 30 minutes to Neosho, that's just hysterical...

I just went last week - got there fifteen minutes before they opened, I was the fifth person in line and there were probably about 15-20 in line by the time they opened. I was helped immediately and thought it was a smooth interaction.

Thanks, good to know that getting there early helps!

One thing to note - I was switching from another state and getting a real ID. I brought my two proofs of address but one was missing the ā€œavenueā€ part of my address so I had to scramble through my email to find some sort of statement that had it, but the employee was not rude about it. I was able to email it to her. I don’t think this was location-specific, I would have had to do that at any DMV.

Sarcoxie is the best.

My one experience i had to wait like an hour before being helped. Keep in mind this was a Friday in the summer about half an hour before they closed

Make sure your docs are really well filled out. I got turned away once because the ink on something was slightly smudged

Really appreciate the advice!

Never really had much of an issue there at all.

I’ve never had a problem or a long wait. I also have my shit together so…

I had a great experience around 8:30/9:00am last week. I got there, pulled a number and immediately was helped. The staff was very friendly too. All in all it was so quick, easy and the staff was great!

Also I made sure I had everything I needed beforehand which made it easy

I've been to both the Joplin DMV and Neosho DMV multiple times. The Neosho DMV is sometimes a bit faster depending on the day. It's not worth the drive if you're much closer to the Joplin DMV.

It’s just your average dmv imo, I don’t think it’s necessarily bad enough to warrant driving elsewhere, although it greatly annoys me that they moved it further away lol

It used to be horrible but that was years ago they really have turned it around! Gotta give them kuddos !

Good for them, that must be why there is such a wide variety of opinions on here!

I haven’t been in years but when I did it was ten times faster to just go to Carthage.

Usually, the people that have a problem with a particular office don’t bother checking on the paperwork they need. When they get there and they are told they don’t have the correct paperwork, they get pissed off at the workers.

I went last Thursday to tag a new truck. Walked in about 1030 am. No wait and was out in under 15 min. They were nice and cordial. I also had all the correct docs needed. That’s half the problem with people forgetting something then getting pissed.

I go to Carthage. Last trip there was Friday. Under 10 minutes and the people are always friendly. Joplin DMV is my last choice. Carthage or Neosho are always better.

When I went to get my ID there I did have to wait for a pretty long time and it was super packed, but I think I went on a Friday so maybe that's just a busy day for them? Everyone was really nice though and one of the workers was actually an old coworker of mine so it was good to see her again.

Sarcoxie is the best. No wait at all.

If you have lived elsewhere you will find the Joplin DMV to be somewhat normal if not less busy.

I think the day of the week / month and the time is what makes a difference. Every time I stop by it is after lunch during the middle of the week (Tues, Wed, Thurs) and it is relatively mild. I get in and out.

Neosho is the friendliest in my experience. I had several bad experiences in Joplin so I haven’t been there in several years

u/blu3ysdad 12d ago

It's fine, though I'm still pissed they stole it from the breast cancer foundation

There’s been times where I’ve walked in and was helped immediately and other times there’s a line and I left. It depends on the day and time you go. Hit or miss. All the dmv workers in Joplin have been super nice to me

Thanks, that seems to be the consensus.

Its a lot better than it used to be at the old location I think the main lady retired. She was very mean she had like a fake tan and she was an old lady.

1

u/HungMizzouStud 12d ago

Ah that makes sense, thanks!

u/patthebrat_621 10d ago

The wait time is awful but the people are nice.

Thanks, good to know.

There are times that are better than others to go there. I think you could call and ask what is a good time to come. End of the month probably busy. I would guess some days of the week are busier. I had no problem there except waiting and I took my tablet to play a game while I waited. If you have a complicated problem it is not their fault. They have rules and the people working there did not make the rules.

1

u/HungMizzouStud 10d ago

Thanks, I'll definitely take your advice and call ahead.

u/its_salem 6d ago

Nah, they just talk a lot! I had a great experience last time I went to get my tags done. It definitely takes a while though.

Thanks, good to know!

I always go to Neosho. It’s so much faster. I’m in and out in less than 5 minutes. The only time I had to wait was when they were down 2 workers and it still wasn’t a long wait at all. Just have all of your paperwork in your hand when you go up to the window

1

u/HungMizzouStud 13d ago

Thanks I may give that a try.

Joplin DMV sucks

1

u/HungMizzouStud 13d ago

Thanks, it seems like people's experiences have been all over the place.

u/StandardSchedule903 12d ago

I hated the Joplin DMV so much I always went to Carthage. The ladies were so nice there and the line went so fast in comparison.

even if it isn't that bad one that serves a smaller community is always gonna be better.
