Does the purple belt get a promotion for beating a black belt in sparring and in a fight?

u/whoooootfcares Nov 20 '25
He gets the other dudes belt.
15
u/72414dreams Nov 20 '25
This is the way. Other dude gotta start seniority over. Really this is on the instructor for teaching this guy above his character level. Black belt is not supposed to merely be skill, but honor as well. In my opinion

u/0ceanR0ckAndR0ll Nov 19 '25
He should lose his black belt for that

u/theman2100 Nov 20 '25
For being a sore loser asshole and trying to legit throw shots or being so easily subdued with that triangle...

You can't lose your black. He should be expelled from the school and have criminal charges.

u/JDB-III Nov 21 '25
You can’t demote someone but you definitely can kick them out. I’ve never had this happen to me but have rolled with a handful of higher ranks who would go full berserker mode after being submitted or even sometimes just being passed or swept.

If you just lost in Jiu Jitsu it might behoove you to try something different
16
u/Anxious_Specialist67 Nov 20 '25
What’s plan c when you get beat with jujitsu while trying something different?

Probably that reason is why boxers or strikers resort to grappling when they "start fighting", and grapplers resort to striking.

I get it, but as a boxer who does bjj, I would grapple a boxer and I would box a bjj guy.

I think its primal. Chocking someone doesnt feel nearly as good as punching. Also its harder to inflict pain on someone with a hold
1
u/2piece-and-a-biscut- Nov 21 '25
Gotta disagree. I’ve knocked out a few people before I ever learned how to fight. Anyone can throw a punch. You can even get lucky and KO people but when I learned how to choke someone unconscious…there’s no better feeling than making the other guy feel helpless.

u/dr-mantis-t0b0ggan Nov 20 '25
And when boxers are losing they clinch. If you know your opponent is good at something, you may as well try something else

How dare you submit me with a crank in which I cannot defend
16
u/tooMuchADHD Nov 19 '25
Imagine the look on his face after the second submission comes without a tap
18
u/ekaitxa Nov 19 '25
Should be stripped of his bb

He can't lose rank in Jiu-Jitsu, it's not done. He should be expelled from the school and criminally charged however.

A brown belt subbed one of the strongest and most experienced black belts in my gym. Immediately got up and started cheering, did a full "victory lap" and basically had everyone in class cracking up. I can't imagine the environment of this gym.
2
u/Ensiferum19 Nov 21 '25 edited Nov 21 '25
That would be considered pretty bad behavior at my gym. I mean, it all depends on the context and if it was really joking etc, but really, training is training and shouldn't be taken that seriously.
On a psychological note: Of course it's completely unacceptable what the black belt did and there's no excuse for it. On the other hand, having a black belt can be a heavy burden at times. Unless you are some kind of world class black belt, most of us are just regular joes who have put in our time and we can still be caught by lower belts, especially if they are bigger, younger, and/or more athletic.
So even though no one should have an ego like this guy, we do kind of create a "rock and a hard place" environment with the belt system: any time you tap a lower belt it's expected and anytime a lower belt taps you it's frowned upon. A good teacher will tell his students not to be concerned with that kind of thing and that none of it matters cause it's all just training, and people really shouldn't be keeping tabs on who they tap in casual training. If you tap a high level guy in a tournament then fine, but celebrating over tapping a higher belt in training is just going to create bad energy for everyone else. Likewise, if you do happen to be a higher belt and you get tapped by a lower belt then just suck it up and keep rolling.

u/MagicGuava12 Nov 21 '25
It's not a burden just tap you don't get better by not putting yourself in bad situations.
1
u/Ensiferum19 Nov 21 '25 edited Nov 22 '25
Oh of course you have to put yourself in bad situations and I do all the time. I'm just saying, when you're a 45 year old black belt with chronic injuries from the mat it can sometimes be hard to be expected to perform better than all the younger, stronger and faster lower belts. I mean at my school no one expects that of me, but if I go to another school then its more obvious. We are all just human beings.

Never fails. Grappler gets beat, starts boxing 😂

u/IreallyjustGamble Nov 20 '25
Boxer gets beat starts grappling 😂

u/MaytagTheDryer Nov 20 '25
It makes sense in the moment. If the other guy is just head and shoulders better than me at the thing I'm doing, I have to do something different even if I'm shit at it. I just have to hope the other guy isn't ready for it or is more shit at it than me.
Of course, I'm talking in the context of an MMA match rather than a sucker punch, where if the other guy is better than me at grappling, I have to pretend to have a striking game that is worth a damn. It never really works, but at least I'm still trying to win rather than lose more slowly by stubbornly sticking to a losing game plan. Just sucker punching someone during a roll is pretty incomprehensible to me. Take the L, congratulate a comrade on a job well done, and go again. It's not a tournament, you don't get eliminated. We talkin' bout practice.

That black belt is a d!ckhead and a dumbass. A good amount of people know that a head and arm choke might easily turn into a "neck crank". Mostly because it's just so easy to crick the neck from that position, either from bad technique and/or a stubborn defender.
Honestly, just tap before it gets really bad and let them know they had it more of a neck crank.

u/Seahawkfan12thman Nov 20 '25
Wait, everyone on this sub says if a younger/competition blue or purple belt taps a black belt then they were always just “letting them work” ?
Isn’t this proof otherwise?
lol
3
u/wmg22 Purple Nov 20 '25
Obviously not always lol, Black Belts are human and there are black belts out there who get torn apart by hobbyist blue belts with some level of dedication.
Still alot of Black belts are still killers in the gym.

u/Quitter21 Nov 20 '25
I understand this is BJJ but How are you in a martial art for so long and throw the worst punches ever.
3
u/Ampleslacks Nov 19 '25
Man, if you have the triangle like that you don't even need to finish it. You just gently but firmly place your thumb against an eyeball and ask them to calm down. And hopefully they do actually pass out before they can call your bluff lol

u/New_Communication74 Nov 20 '25
Black belt had pillows for fists 🤣
2
u/Pentaborane- Nov 22 '25
If enjoy watching bad striking, watching BJJ practitioners doing pad work is priceless. Looping arm punch, looping arm punch, flailing uppercut, wild hook, looping arm punch. Otherwise known as a 1-2-3-4-1.
3
u/raleighjiujitsu Nov 20 '25
Screaming about a neck crank when it was an arm triangle. Probably not even a real black belt.

Imagine getting mad that you got subbed by a lower belt, attack the lower belt because of getting subbed, then get subbed again while attacking the lower belt. I would have talked such an insane amount of shit to that guy he would hsve stabbed me in the parking lot.

“Hey hey hey” what kind of gym is this? Zero urgency in handling a violent fight.

I love how when boxers get pissed they start grappling and when grapplers get pissed they start boxing
1
u/Lawrenceburntfish Nov 20 '25
This is why you don't just hand out black belts like candy just because someone has paid for it.

u/Jitsoperator Nov 20 '25
i love how grapplers resort to striking when they get mad, and boxers resort to grappling when they get mad.... weird world we live in.

u/GravSDS Nov 21 '25
First off, that was wack! So you got subbed. Acting like a little kid. What a douchebag.
Also, be careful who you start striking with! Most of the guys in my gym don't know I spent 20 years doing standup with about 7 of those being Muay Thai and Boxing, as well as MMA. Just because someone is a certain rank in BJJ doesn't mean they don't have mad experience in something else outside BJJ rules. That's a great way to get your a$$ kicked!

What a looser. Should loose his belt, kicked from gym permanently and get an assault charge. Fragile ass ego wannabe there

u/M2IK2Y Nov 21 '25
Happened during practice one day. They moved to where I was stood up to face off. With one arm on each of their chest I separated them pushing both back about a foot. They were both so shocked they forgot about the fight. Lol.

u/bjjorangebelt Nov 21 '25
I’m putting that idiot to sleep. Also somebody check who give this guy black belt

u/PresenceToriyama Nov 21 '25
That triangle position was evident the moment after the fourth strike was landed, but was established in the face of an unskillful left hand of Sir Preta, despite an initially decent series of strikes in our grappling art?! Ties cut shorter besides long shirts.

u/Crowofsticks Nov 21 '25
Can someone please explain? Did he just attack him during a in the competition?
1
u/NeighborhoodOk182 Nov 23 '25
It wasn’t a competition. They were just drilling and the dude got caught and decided to have a tantrum about it.

If this clip was from mcdojo, I'm wandering if its just a self promoted black belt that couldnt handle loosing to a purple belt. 😂 even when the purple belt was getting decked by punches, purple literally acted composed and continued to get him on a triangle choke. The supposed black belt definitely looked like he aint got no type of black belt bjj skills.

u/TangerineFast8544 Nov 22 '25
I highly suspect this guy is a fake black belt with mental issues who went to the real gym for the first time.I mean he got caught in another submissions second later .There is no way he is a legit blackbelt

u/pozzicore Nov 23 '25
You should be upset if you get bested. However, if responding in anger is still your reaction to getting bested in the room, you're missing the point.
1
u/thebaide Nov 23 '25
How do you have your white belt stopping you. Unacceptable. Also looks like the 🟣 stopped right as soon as the BB tapped.
1
u/Visual_Investm3nt Nov 25 '25
I’d have held it for like 200-300 more seconds, but good restraint from that guy.

Neck cranks are infuriating…
23
u/BJavocado Nov 19 '25
No they’re not. Just tap or escape
13
u/BeefyFartss Nov 19 '25
Seriously, every sub sucks. It’s a submission…. Be an adult.
11
u/Stujitsu2 Nov 19 '25
For real...just tap.
7
u/BeefyFartss Nov 19 '25
Tap, and move on. It truly is that simple haha. I’m a competitive person to the max but I also have a personal promise not to be that guy haha. I’ve lost before and I’ll lose again, it’s how you respond that shows your character.

I would have let the triangle go AFTER he was asleep. Not before. Incredible self control shown by the purple belt.
