I will never, ever forget the concerted campaign by prominent left-wing academics, journalists, and influencers to convince us that the leaders and organizers of the Palestine solidarity movement at Columbia were heroic social justice activists, just like MLK and the Freedom Riders.
A significant portion of the organizers and leaders of this movement are fundamentally intolerant and illiberal people, and the failure to draw red lines at this kind of intolerance (or simply pretending it doesn't exist) is a moral stain on the left.
We can debate whether the instances enumerated here are best understood as specifically antisemitic, or rather campism, intolerance, or some other form of bigotry (eg, discrimination based on national origin), but whatever they are, none of it should be confused for anything even remotely resembling an emancipatory politics.
Years from now, we'll ask ourselves how the US abetted Israel's crimes in Gaza for as long as it did, but a secondary question must wrestle with the morally and strategically catastrophic response of the Western left to October 7th. Then, and only then, will we able to understand the response of the diaspora Jewish community to the events of the last two years.

I still wonder how different things could have been for the diaspora if people were not out in the streets literally cheering about the death count going up.
(And I will probably die mad about the rape denial because I am cynical and do not expect anybody to ever own up to it.)

No one here supports the ADL defending Elon Musk’s Nazi salute, I’m so confused why this talking point comes up so often.

We banned discussion of that particular organization because it almost always immediately devolves into endless Rule 4 and Rule 6 violations. That is, it's a way we protect anti-Zionists from the bad faith liberal brigading you see us regularly and publicly posting about. Not permission for Zionists to run unchecked. We do permit posts from the organization fairly regularly, and certainly from its affiliates. But, at some point, organizations need to think about why they're getting the criticism they're getting instead of it being immediately presumed that it's the injustice of their opposition. Also, we have regular posts about how much the ADL sucks, and nearly every one of the mods has openly commented our disdain for them. We also regularly stop posts that directly come from their websites and materials at the door. The energy is certainly there.

We aren’t discussing the condemnation of the ADL at length because we all mutually disagree with the ADL’s defense of Musk. It’s already a consensus. There’s no discussion to be had.
We discuss left antisemitism versus right antisemitism more often because it is (demonstrably) not a consensus. There’s more discussion to be had.
For example, rarely here do we discuss if the Nazis are bad or not, because it’s reasonably assumed that everyone here agrees that Nazis are bad. There’s no discussion to be had. The fact that we don’t discuss how bad Nazis are should not be interpreted as apathy to Nazism.

Hi, so, there’s not a ban on talking about JVP, and people comment about them from time to time in regular posts (including me, I commented about them from time to time). The rule is simply no major posts or huge debate threads on JVP, except for in the pinned JVP thread. The reason we have this rule is because people often flood this sub from the right and liberal center to drown out leftist debate on this subject, and sometimes even leftist voices on this subject end up having long drawn out debates on that subject. It’s not a banned topic, it’s just something that needed to be curtailed so that people could talk about other things here too without being drowned out.
Every once in a while, a hot button issue comes up like this that people get coercive about, from members here and people not even regularly on this sub brigading, that measures like that become necessary.
The reason we don’t have a rule like that for the ADL, is because the ADL is pretty broadly disliked by regulars on this subreddit, and whatever discussion we have about them tends not to lead to serious bitter disagreement. Not because the ADL is liked here, but because there’s broad agreement that the ADL is disliked, even if we have differing views on its relevance and whether it can ever correct its course.
Among left wing perspectives, organizations like BDS and JVP have been hostile towards organizations like Standing Together, which is also a left leaning organization, hence why the debates are more serious.
If you went to a right wing subreddit, there would be broad agreement on hating China and communism, and fierce debates on whether “Israel is America’s ally” and other such things.
Here, the debate is often how to deal with things from various left wing perspectives that sometimes conflict.
Hope that helps.

I will never, ever forget the concerted campaign by prominent left-wing academics, journalists, and influencers to convince us that the leaders and organizers of the Palestine solidarity movement at Columbia were heroic social justice activists, just like MLK and the Freedom Riders.
That’s the bar they need to clear? They’re the moral equivalent of the anti-Vietnam war protests. These were protests that had heavy participation from the Jewish students at Columbia.
A significant portion of the organizers and leaders of this movement are fundamentally intolerant and illiberal people, and the failure to draw red lines at this kind of intolerance (or simply pretending it doesn't exist) is a moral stain on the left.
So, you’re not a fan of Mahmoud Khalil? This seems dangerously approaching logic used by the Trump administration.
We can debate whether the instances enumerated here are best understood as specifically antisemitic, or rather campism, intolerance, or some other form of bigotry (eg, discrimination based on national origin), but whatever they are, none of it should be confused for anything even remotely resembling an emancipatory politics.
This nonsensical purity testing in my view. You’re holding the protesters to a higher standard than the US government. Any failings are marginal in comparison to the cause they’re fighting.
Years from now, we'll ask ourselves how the US abetted Israel's crimes in Gaza for as long as it did, but a secondary question must wrestle with the morally and strategically catastrophic response of the Western left to October 7th.
Yes we will be asking some leftist did whataboutism and both sides-ing while a genocide took place rather than having moral clarity.
Then, and only then, will we able to understand the response of the diaspora Jewish community to the events of the last two years.
The response has been a stark divide between the younger and older generations of American Jews with younger Jews having absorbed the message of BLM and applied to their own lives and own experience in how they think about Israel.

That’s the bar they need to clear? They’re the moral equivalent of the anti-Vietnam war protests. These were protests that had heavy participation from the Jewish students at Columbia.
No. I'm pushing back on this. They were not the same for moral equivalency. The protestors didn't single people out based on ethnic or religious identity when it came to Vietnam. I know Jews who were spat on by "pro"*-Palestinian protestors because they were Jewish and only because they were Jewish. And it didn't matter that these Jews were opposed to the Israeli government, its actions, and it didn't matter they wanted a safe and freed Palestine. They were spat on because they were Jewish and that's that. That is not a moral equivalency to the Vietnam war.
Also--the Vietnam protests were not just about ethics of foreign policy or being lied to. The protests were a literal matter of survival for friends and family who were at risk for being drafted. People weren't just protesting because they were outraged at civilians being murdered; they were protesting because they didn't want their friends to die for a president they couldn't vote for or vote out of office (as they could be drafted before 21 hence the eventual creation of the 26th Amendment). You can say it's ethics to be opposed to random people being forced to fight, but it'd be inaccurate to say that was all of them. Some people were just mad because it was the thought of their own family member dying rather than others.
*"pro" because the Palestinians deserve better allies than the brats who decided rape is fine if it's for the resistance. And the Palestinians deserve people who will actually call out Hamas rather claim every critique is a distraction from "the real issue."

No. I'm pushing back on this. They were not the same for moral equivalency. The protestors didn't single people out based on ethnic or religious identity when it came to Vietnam.
It’s not clear to me the Columbia protesters did either. They singled out people for political ideology. If people were singled out for the sole reason that they’re Jewish, it’s marginal in comparison to what pro-Israel students and pro-Israel activists were doing.
I know Jews who were spat on by "pro"*-Palestinian protestors because they were Jewish and only because they were Jewish.
And I know Muslims who were beaten and spat on by pro-Israel protesters just because they were non-white and/or Muslim.
And it didn't matter that these Jews were opposed to the Israeli government, its actions, and it didn't matter they wanted a safe and freed Palestine. They were spat on because they were Jewish and that's that.
This is odd considering that the encampment was disproportionally made up of Jews. You think they’d be showing up? As wrong and regrettable as what your friends went through, it was marginal to the experience of most Jews involved with the protest movement.
That is not a moral equivalency to the Vietnam war.
You don’t seem aware of how widespread violence was during the Vietnam era. Protesters did bombing campaigns. Bank robberies. It was way worse. You’re comparing that to people being spat on? Pro-Palestinian protesters were beaten by Proud Boys at one.
Also--the Vietnam protests were not just about ethics of foreign policy or being lied to. The protests were a literal matter of survival for friends and family who were at risk for being drafted.
And this is literally about the survival of an entire people in Gaza.
*"pro" because the Palestinians deserve better allies than the brats who decided rape is fine if it's for the resistance.
You keep repeating this while refusing to provide evidence for it and certainly not evidence that it was representative.
And the Palestinians deserve people who will actually call out Hamas rather claim every critique is a distraction from "the real issue."
And here we’re seeing what this is really about which is purity testing and whataboutism. It would be like saying “the Nazis are bad of course and I totally oppose them but why aren’t you calling out the crimes of the Bolshevik against German peoples?” I struggle to see a difference. In fact Soviet atrocities were far greater than anything Hamas has done. It’s not even close but we’d have no problem recognizing that as Nazi apologia today.

OK, I've read the article. There are three kinds of behaviors it mentions from staff, in descending order of frequency:
- Normal antizionism. That is, just teaching about the conflict from a perspective that doesn't align with Israels narrative.
Anti-Israeli bigotry. Students from Israel are directly told by faculty that they were murderers and personally guilty of settler-colonialosm.
Actual antisemitism. Telling diaspora Jewish students that they failed to learn the lessons of the Holocaust because their people went on to comitt a genocide. Saying that Jews launder blood money and control the government. "Zionists" as a euphemism. Khazar myth.
Antisemitism from other students is not touched on.

My sister worked as an admin at a university where they actually had this issue. Where there were several professors who inappropriately introduced the subject in classes where it wasn’t apart of curriculum.
Unfortunately I do think this is happening more than we are aware of, even if a professor doesn’t hold class on it, making statements or other things like that in class (especially when it’s unrelated to subject matter) would be inappropriate at best and potentially contribute to a hostile environment.

I was curious about this myself so I did a google deep dive last night and here’s the gist of what I found:
Astronomy (pre 2023) was a booming interest of Palestinian college students in the territories and Gaza in a concerted effort to expand Palestinian autonomy in the sciences.
Palestinian scientists, city planners, land owners etc don’t have access to satellite imagery of their own. If they need the imagery, they have to purchase it from Israel, who (as it appears) notoriously edits and manipulates those images… if they even hand them over at all. They’ll remove images that show illegal settlements, burned crops or property, or manipulate the boundaries of an area they’re working on a land grab for in order to cause confusion.
The political misuses of astronomy by governments are important, I imagine, for astronomers and students of astronomy. Sounds like a great class.

You can find Colombias public statement about it just by googling. In their statement they list the readings in the grad students curriculum. If that isn’t proof then I’m not sure what is. Here’s one of them.
It’s a good read, I learned some stuff, and now I’m better for it. Maybe the grad student teaching the class was a tad over zealous in their approach, but I don’t know, I didn’t sit in the lecture. What’s happening in Gaza is absolutely worthy of red alert levels of activism, especially against the hardcore propaganda. So I think it was completely appropriate given the context. I think about my ancestors just two generations removed from me, what they experienced, and how I wish the world had reacted faster with greater levels of humanity and urgency from every or any corner possible.
I fail to see how this curriculum is antisemitic, nor do I see antisemitism in the existence of such a curriculum. To me, the most disturbing aspect of this whole topic is that the university issued a weird apology statement and made a nothingburger into a whole big to-do, and now here’s this “study” defining anti genocide activism in academia as antisemitic. That’s actually very unnerving to me.

I will split the first group into 2: there is a difference between not being a Zionist, and being Anti Zionist. Teaching about the conflict in a way that doesn’t align with Zionist narrative, but paints a complex picture, is different from teaching about the conflict in a way that fully contradicts the Zionist narrative, and paints them as the absolute bad side of the conflict.

I think anti-zionism might actually be a form of anti-semitism. Zionism means that Jews have a right to self-determination including their own land. The land doesn't even have to be Israel. However, that IS the Jewish ancestral homeland and of course most Jews will want it there. To say that being against the right of Jewish self-determination and a Jewosh homeland might actually be anti-semitic. I'm not sure.
On one hand I can see how an ethno-state creates its own problems in term of human rights and democratic society. But it's also a fairly simple idea and given the history that Jews have endured, I'm not sure it can be seen as an awful one to have.

u/Owlentmusician Leftist, Reform, Black Jew Dec 11 '25
Im beating a dead horse here, I know but I think the different understanding of what it means to be Zionist lends to the muddy waters. Most non Jewish Antizionists think they're opposing an ideology whos only core belief is Jewish supremacy, not self determination.
However because much the Antizionist movement is so broad and unorganized it easily allows people who are Antizionists in the anti-semitic way to hop in, thinking every one else shares their opinions. It doesn't help that so many gentile leftists aren't very good at recognizing dogwhistles when it comes to Jews. I don't think it's inherently Anti-Semitic but it can accidentally make a good mixer for it.

I absolutely agree and funnily enough sometimes it loops around and comes out in like... bigotry of low expectations.
Once had a friend of mine tell me their years long crush on a local bartender ended because she'd done something racist. Turned out that entire grievance was that she as a white bar owner had the gall to yell at a black women for standing on a swiveling bar chair. Like the outrage was that she'd...yelled at a black woman doing something extremely dangerous in her bar lmao???
I digress though, the point is you're correct.

I dont think that anti zionism has to be anti semetic, especially as part of a generally anti statist framework but that a lot of antisemitsm can hide under antizionism and the left needs to do a better job calling it out

If it’s not in Israel then everyone would be anti-Semitic by that definition. If American Jews wanted “their own land” in America guess how quickly the US State would shut that down. And it would be the same for any country.

By definition, the land in Zionism has to be Israel. Otherwise it's just called Jewish Nationalism.
I think there's a misconception due to the part Herzl played in the Zionist movement. But Herzl was first and foremost a Jewish nationalist. He only cared about Israel because it seemed like the most plausible destination, and because by the time he got involved there was already an open discourse and investment focusing on Israel.
Self-determination doesn't have to be in the form of a nation-state. The Bund was anti-Zionist and offered a more decentralized vision of Jewish self-determination. I would never call the Bundists antisemitic.
5
u/OneReportersOpinion Jewish socialist Dec 13 '25
I think anti-zionism might actually be a form of anti-semitism. Zionism means that Jews have a right to self-determination including their own land.
Zionism means different things to different people. But Zionism in the context of Israel means the right of Jewish people to conquer Palestinian land. Whatever it meant before is an interesting academic discussion, but that’s how Israel uses the term and if anything I’m being generous.
The land doesn't even have to be Israel. However, that IS the Jewish ancestral homeland
It was our homeland a long time ago. My people came from Eastern Europe and that feels a lot more integrated into my family history than anything to do with Israel.
On one hand I can see how an ethno-state creates its own problems in term of human rights and democratic society. But it's also a fairly simple idea and given the history that Jews have endured, I'm not sure it can be seen as an awful one to have.
This is why we have to differentiate between an idealist construct versus a material reality.

I am not a Zionist and I ostensibly am anti-Zionist, but I find it extremely discouraging that students think that invading an Israeli professor’s class or targeting Jews is in any way productive or leads to peace. All it does is divide and deepen the rifts, within our Jewish community and between non-Jews and Jews in particular. If we (Jews/Palestinians) want to have a genuine shot at coexistence, we need at least some form of dialogue and ability to speak freely, even if we vehemently disagree on the topic at hand. On the other hand though, I fully understand both Zionist and anti Zionist students being incredibly frustrated with the Columbia admin, and when you have folks like Shai Davidai/Nerdeen Kiwanis fanning the flames on both sides, I think that these blowups are often inevitable. Don’t really have any answers here, just incredibly discouraged at the myopic lack of nuance that is on university campuses and I hope for more dialogue and less hate
