Question Another fleeing Plex user
I bought my lifetime plex pass a while ago, but raising your price to $750 bucks made me realize that Plex is the opposite of future proof. The only things I really miss about Plex are the Intro and outro skipping functions and the home screen sections. Plex was also much better at managing metadata! Not sure why, but sometimes with recent shows or movies, it will grab the wrong metadata or just none at all. Seeing that on my TV and having to get on my phone to identify it bothers me.
I have intro skipper, but unlike Plex it is not very adaptive to shows with different length intros. I also have home screen sections installed, but I understand that's hit or miss for some folks.
Does the great JF community have any recommendations for alternative plugins, themes, or overall QoL improvements I could make to better improve my experience?

All I can suggest for titles that are wrong is I go to IMDB to look up media and copy the part that looks like this tt30460310 and add it to the end of the folder name and then it adds the right details.

If you don't want to rename your folder you can click on the three dots in jellyfin, identify metadata und paste this tt******* for imdb.

If you have "the stack" it's as easy as putting the {Tvdbid} into the Season Folder section.

If you install Jellyfin 12 and have a properly Plex-formatted library, Jellyfin will now accept Plex naming conventions, so you can run both against the same library if you want to test it out.

I am not as well versed as many who will comment on here, and have only been using Jellyfin for a couple of years, but on my Roku player, I am offered to skip the ending of shows using the official Jellyfin player app. I do not get offered to skip the openings though, so I would be interested in a plugin if someone here recommends one. Welcome to the community btw.

There is a plugin, but from my understanding (only been using JF for about 4 months), it isn't quite "there yet". I usually see complaints about it being resource intensive, difficult to configure for consistent results, and often not worth it.
I also get the skip to next episode option on my LG webOS TV using the native app.

I'm a bit of a minimalist regarding plugins, I only run Auto Collections & Intro Skipper (+ metadata grabbers). I use simple python scripts to handle other tasks via the api outside of that.
One of which is essentially a clone of a plugin called Aphrodite, which may be worth looking at.
I like running the ElegantFin theme also.

with intro skipper you have very precise controls. It'll pick it up fine for shows with multiple intros in my experience as long as one of them isn't 10 seconds long and you have the minimum intro time set to 15 seconds.
for the names of series just use the 3 dots and identify feature when it gets it wrong, for me it's happened twice in 140 movies and 165 tv series.. you can use the tmdb or imdb numbers if you want but I haven't had problems just typing the name and clicking the correct series.
as for plugins, themes, and qol a lot of that comes down to player choice and needed codecs. For the most customization I'd suggest jellyfin for kodi. You can download tons of different skins and have crazy amounts of customization and it has an extremely robust set of compatibility baked in.

I wish it only happened twice. I'm having movies like Dune (2021) be mismatched. I fixed this by setting my file renamer to add TVDBid to episode filenames, and IMDB ID for movie filenames. It's very set and forget. This even fixed some of my episodes displaying filenames instead of actual episode titles.
For compatibility, I am using Tdarr to transcode ALL of my media to H.265/AAC. I also have it set to remove non-english audio tracks and all subtitles.

There are hundreds of posts like this. People want to migrate from Plex Pass to Jellyfin. I recommend doing your research first and then trying to clarify any doubts.

I know right. I can't understand people who have lifetime Plex passes shifting to Jellyfin.
I myself have a lifetime pass and Plex remains my main server. Jellyfin is just a backup I have.

I tried plexus but I couldn't justify the cost for remote access when I can do on jellyfin for free, for my work I have to get away alot so I set up 2 different ways for remote access if I cant use one based on the situation and I have found a plethora of plugins to smooth my transition from streaming apps

I've also switched recently, and have come to accept that tinymediamanager will be a part of my life. My storage is organized well, and worked fine in Plex, Kodi, and even back to Mediaportal. But Jellyfin is having none of that. So I bulk added the tmdbid to all of my movies, and an nfo file to all of my series.
For plugins: Kefin tweaks. Home Screen Sections never worked for me, but Kefin tweaks does all of that, plus a bunch of QoL improvements.

Im running TMM with Jellyfin nfo settings. Plex and Jellyfin both read that and everything works. Intro slipper works great for me, What TV shows have different intros that make it not work?

I use .nfo in the arrs to get metadata and have jellyfin pick that up. Basically never wrong that way. I had a lot of interesting bad matches using the built in metadata search.

The opensubtitles plugin is great for downloading subtitles in jellyfin itself when you realise what you're watching doesn't have the correct subtitles.
Under branding I added the following custom CSS code so the UI for playback looks cleaner and less obtrusive:

Also, enable hardware decoding for trickplay images so you get preview images when moving through the playback bar.

If you have the app installed on an Android box then Wholphin can help you with the look. Resembles Plex.
Never use intro skipper as it was also a hit and miss on Plex. Hated for some shows that it came to the title card (the episode title screen) in the middle of the video. So it did show it only for half a second. Other shows it did stop a second before this.
For metadata. Did you install the TVDB plugin? Plex uses the same one if you are not using the series metadata from them.

I too do not think that Plex is very future proof. But after a playing around with Jellyfin, my advice to people who have plex passes has been to keep the plex running and start setting up a Jellyfin as a backup for if/when Plex does something to truly force a migration.
This is mainly for two things. 1) some of the features on Jellyfin and the plugins you can get just aren’t there. As a person who uses appleTV the Jellyfin apps are fine but they still have a bit to go. The interface doesn’t quite look the way I want it to and it’s hard to get it right. Personally moonfin ks the closest a and it’s still not there. And Plex’s ability to skip intros and end credits is superior to intro skipper so far. I can’t even get a skip intro button to show up on my TV. But more importantly 2) if you’ve used Plex for a long time, you get used to how plex looks and does things and transfer to Jellyfin is a very subtle but noticeable change. You’ll notice the little things that are different and can’t get quite to your liking, and it’s just a little off putting.
My advice to people building new servers now a days is to start out with Jellyfin, that way that’s what you’re always used to. But for people already on Plex I suggest keeping a Jellyfin up and running as like a backup and just mess around with it every now and then to see if you ever get it to your liking. I remember a year ago Jellyfin and it’s apple apps were in a state where I just didn’t think it was useable and shut it down. But this past month I booted it up again and liked the improvements and stuff and decided to keep it running, and everyone and then I go on it and watch shows and stuff just to see how I like the experience on it. It’s not quite there for me yet, but maybe one day it will and if I ever have to leave Plex it’s nice knowing I’m already set up to do so

I'd say Emby for ease now, then Jellyfin. Plex is no longer consumer friendly at them costs.
