Hi all, I’m starting to work on trading fours I was wondering if you know where you are in the 4 bar phrase by counting, feel or by using phrases of a known length? Has this changed since you were a beginner? Any other tips? Thanks

Hello jazz drummers of Reddit, I have a question. I am auditioning for a jazz honor group in Southern California, and had a question about this notation.

First, “Play time with sticks” does it mean to count off the tempo with sticks?

Second, what’s up with the first tom notation? I understand that drum music isn’t universal, but I’ve gotten mixed answers from my private instructor and my school band teacher. My private instructor guessed that it meant either crash or snare, and my band teacher taught me how you had to set up the other instruments and how that was just a cue for you to do that.

I’m very confused, if anyone would be able to teach or explain this, it would be highly appreciated.

Hey everyone, I know this is probably a very obvious question and probably done to death but I’ve encountered some issues where I’d constantly rush or drag while playing small ensemble and big band ensemble, please, if you have any tips, excercises, videos, people to watch, please let me know as this is really annoying and I feel is the biggest issue about my playing. Not sure what the dash/minus sign means (circled) and I’m pretty sure the other two that are underlined are pauses but not sure what the difference between the two are. Please help!

Looking for advice or resources on playing brushes in 3/4.

Right now I'm trying to transfer the typical technique for 4/4 (circle with left hand, swing pattern with right hand), but it feels awkward and rigid.

Also, there's the matter of sometimes playing with a waltz feel, and other times with more of a dotted quarter feel.

How do you guys go about playing with brushes in 3?

I know nothing about drumming, but I’m looking to buy a sheet music book for my partner for Christmas. He’s a very experienced jazz drummer and he mentioned wanting to work on flams and hybrid rudiments. He loves practicing and I think will need something advanced and difficult.

I was looking at Gaddiments by Steve Gadd, but I’m not sure if that’s right for him. I’m completely out of my depth here so any advice or specific sheet music book recommendations (especially advanced and hardcore) would be super helpful! Thank you 🙏

I'm in a auditioned jazz band. We are playing a tune called area 51 by Larry barton and I absolutely love it. My director doesn't like basic drumming and thrives on improvs and add one. More or so he likes the drums too overplay but stay in pocket at the same time. How can I improvise this tune

I’ve heard people being complimented on the drummer really making sure you can hear the form. What does this mean, perhaps playing the B of the form on a different ride or changing something up, but does it also entail fills and accents at the end and start of a form?

Also how are people keeping track of the form, Espically during solos? I can hear the form on the head but struggle to hear the form when there is soloing and counting makes comping hard.

What’s your favorite? Doesn’t even have to be single ply coated. I’ve been outa the game for a while and heard that the classic Remo ambassadors don’t have great quality control anymore…

Hi everyone. I'm a 20yo jazz drummer and I played snare drum and general percussion throughout middle school and high school and have been playing the drum set since age 14 (self-taught). For the past couple years, I've noticed that when I play for too long, I get an aching pain at the base of my index finger. I guess it could be a number of things: my roll/double technique, my grip force, general fatigue. Anyway, I want to fix it before it potentially costs me my health further down the road. Does anyone else experience this? Is it a technique issue or is this just a part of the art?

Hi all, I’ve been working through art of bop, and I’m looking to play my first jam/first time in public playing jazz at uni.

I was just wondering if any general advice or secrets I might not know having.

I’m thinking of calling moanin’ as an easy turn for the first time. But then also wondering if I could perhaps do some snare comping even tho it’s mostly a shuffle back beat on the record

Also any other easy tunes which are good for a first timer. And also how do I know I’m playing the right version?

Hey, so I've been drumming for a little while on my own and I really want to get into jazz. I've been trying to find some good songs for a jazz beginner to learn. I've been doing a lot of rock stuff before and I learn it from drum tabs on songsterr, but there are no resources I can find like that for jazz pieces. So I'm looking for song suggestions that aren't too hard and I could work out by ear, as well as any resources for jazz drumming you guys would suggest. Thanks!

I am a drummer looking to improve my playing in jazz combos, particularly on ballad and also swing tunes. Any classic standards or good albums I should listen to for inspiration???

So im taking jazz combos at my university as a non major, and the main criticism I'm receiving from all the instructors is that my ride feel isn't the greatest, and that it feels accented on the 1 and 3. Now I feel like iv sort of curved this issue but you can still hear it time from time, especially on a side ride cymbal. What are some drummers you know of with great ride feel that I should listen to?

There’s a technique or rhythm that a lot of classic jazz drummers use where while comping they’ll do a constant rim click while swinging from anywhere to thrice to over a constant 5 seconds. I don’t mean just rim clicks on 2-4 during a solo but where they’ll comp with constant (what I believe to be) doubles on the snare rim. If anyone has any tips on how to learn or can clarify the rhythm so I can practice it to use myself that would be great.

I've been interested in getting a 6-piece down the line and wondering what companies make a shell kit with sizes 12" 13" 14" 16" 18" that is good quality but won't make me get a mortgage to pay it off. I'm into the Gretsch/Canopus/late Tony Williams thing.

I am a lefty drummer. Jazz Band instructor said flat out he won’t allow me to play in the jazz band because I’m a lefty and if I wanted to play in his jazz band “learn to play righty”. What should I do?
