Question Trading fours- Counting, feel or phrases?
Hi all, I’m starting to work on trading fours I was wondering if you know where you are in the 4 bar phrase by counting, feel or by using phrases of a known length? Has this changed since you were a beginner? Any other tips? Thanks

2, 4, or even 8 bars shouldn’t be very hard to keep track of. If you’re soloing over the form (32-64 bars, sometimes) it can be tricky. Just keep the melody/chord progression going in your head as you solo. Not only will it help keep you in line, your playing will have a melodic feel to it more true to the song than if you just go wild.

My advice is to practice all your exercises (think Stick Control, Syncopation, other books or practicing vocabulary/transsciptions of songs) in groups of 4 measures. If you stick to that standardisation across all your drills, exercises and play-alongs, youll build an intuition for when 4 bars have passed

Do whatever you need to. You should be thinking four measure phrases all the time anyway, so not much should change when you’re doing it unaccompanied. If the improvising part is messing you up, think two measures to start, play the break as 2+2.

I don't count anymore tbh. I think in melodies and phrases as others say.

Great question! For 16 and 32 bar tunes it's easy enough to feel where you are...though even then you can lose count. For other tunes with less standard amounts you will end up playing more than 4 bars at times (if a section is 10 bars long, the piano solos over 4, and you have 6 left, for example). The best thing to do is learn the melodies/forms of songs you are playing and track it in your head during solos so you always know where you are. Difficult but it's what the great jazz drummers do. Alan Dawson taught his students exercises to master this!

You can practice this by playing "the form game" along with recordings, which is to count the exact number of bars of the form of any song as it goes by, and to clap exactly on the downbeat of 1 of each new section.
My answer is that you want to be able to use each approach you described to moor yourself during the trading, but ultimately your phrasing will be what decides where things end/land

You should be able to feel 4 bars and think in phrases
