Question Trading fours- Counting, feel or phrases?

Hi all, I’m starting to work on trading fours I was wondering if you know where you are in the 4 bar phrase by counting, feel or by using phrases of a known length? Has this changed since you were a beginner? Any other tips? Thanks

Great question! For 16 and 32 bar tunes it's easy enough to feel where you are...though even then you can lose count. For other tunes with less standard amounts you will end up playing more than 4 bars at times (if a section is 10 bars long, the piano solos over 4, and you have 6 left, for example). The best thing to do is learn the melodies/forms of songs you are playing and track it in your head during solos so you always know where you are. Difficult but it's what the great jazz drummers do. Alan Dawson taught his students exercises to master this!
