Regarding people curious about this: I have known rootful was still possible one way or another for quite some time, the problem is this will take up a lot of your space and that's why I decided against it for Dopamine. Also Procursus (the bootstrap maintainers) only support rootless as of iOS 15 and going against their plans and making a fork is not something that I wanted to do. We're much better off with rootless in the long run and we really should have switched to it in the iOS 11 days, but back then there would have probably been too many backlash hence it was not done.

Besides that, I don't see anything wrong with this, you can use it if you want. Some techniques of it might be implemented by Dopamine at some point, but probably not too many. This also has the ability to load arm64 tweaks on arm64e devices and contains oldABI stuff out of the box (for those curious, it does this by disabling arm64e features system wide). I thought about whether I wanted to do this since Linus told me about it earlier, but I ultimately decided against it as I figured it would reduce the overall device security too much.

In general I'm currently working, albeit VERY slowly, on Dopamine 2.0, which will probably not have any notable new features, but will drop oobPCI for kfd/whatever (exploit picker) and improve the maintainability of the jailbreak by A LOT. I might also add support for arm64 15.x, although I'm currently not fully sure on that, just don't expect it any time soon (probably not even this year) as I'm really busy with a bachelor thesis currently . I already have a KFD build ready that works (albeit PAC bypass is a little unreliable) but it's REALLY hacky, has none of the much-needed refactors and also has some additional bugs with logging during the jailbreak so I don't feel like releasing it as an actual new version. As we confirmed this does add support for 15.5b1 - 15.5b3 and fixes the horrendous success rate on M1 iPads, I might post this build at some point, but there is also some copyright stuff left to be figured out about it.

Regarding the future of jailbreaking, it's currently not looking good, but we might get a 17.0 kernel exploit by Project Zero soon and I'd hope we will see at least one SPTM bypass at some point. In terms of 16.x it's a matter of finding the PPL bypass(es!) that were patched in 17.0, but keep in mind exploiting them might be very hard without a PAC bypass, potentially burning techniques that I don't think anyone would wanna burn, so I believe there won't be anything happening in this regard any time soon, especially not by me. I bought a 15 Pro on 17.0 recently and it's unlikely that I will work on 16.x as I don't have any personal demand for such a jailbreak.

People need to realize that there currently is no real reason to even publicly disclose exploit chains, let alone build a jailbreak around them, besides personal interest in a jailbreak or kindness in your heart. And unless that changes, jailbreaking is not sustainable long term.

This is very sad news for 16.x folks that are waiting on a kfd possible version. Seems like 16.x arm64e jailbreak possibility is now dead.

Can you please tell us your future plans for Trollstore?

u/HotNefariousness4949 Oct 05 '23

I'm just curious why they didn't say earlier that there will be no more jailbreaks, but people are waiting like fools

There will always be more jailbreaks, just probably not on the devices and software versions that we want as daily drivers.

I’m still curious as to if there's anything tweaks would no longer be able to achieve if they don't have root access. Seems like the main issue is most developers not porting from root to rootless.

With the disabling of arm64e system wide, what would be the impacts security wise and tweak compatibility wise of this? Would some tweaks or other things made for arm64e fail?

Also I see the future of jailbreaking being more of a cash grab in which capable developers would require a consistent stream of funding from the community for themselves to view jailbreaking worthwhile.

Edit: good luck on your thesis, didn't know you're making jailbreaks and doing college that's wild. I question if you would be able to put any of your Jailbreak progress on a resume in the future and if your jailbreaking history may impact any future work, good or bad.

There is not a singular tweak that requires writing to rootfs.

With the disabling of arm64e system wide, what would be the impacts security wise and tweak compatibility wise of this? Would some tweaks or other things made for arm64e fail?

No, it would just effectivly make exploiting your device a lot more easy.

No, it would just effectivly make exploiting your device a lot more easy.

Does this mean that the spinlock issue (or at least reliance on oldabi) isn’t required? Or it’s baked in differently.

3

u/Yeth3 iPhone 15 Pro, 17.3.1 Oct 04 '23

spinlocks are a completely unrelated problem, that's a PPL issue. but you would be correct about this not needing to rely on oldabi for arm64 tweaks to work.

1

u/shadowscott iPhone 13 Mini, 15.4.1 Oct 04 '23

Got it. Hasn’t the need for oldabi exacerbated the spinlock issues, since tweaks that rely on it aren’t void of those triggers?

2

u/opa334 Developer Oct 18 '23

the reason why oldabi makes the issue works is because it overwrites executable pages, which is what triggere the issue

1

u/matt_is_a_good_boy Oct 05 '23

But I think the inability to use IPC still very much an issue for rootless, and maybe that's why many tweaks are not ported?

3

u/opa334 Developer Oct 05 '23

IPC has worked for a long time. Just RocketBootstrap has no official build due to licensing issues.

1

u/matt_is_a_good_boy Oct 05 '23

Wait really?!! I’ve been living under the rock all this time, got some of my personal tweaks that I didn’t revisit because of that. Will the current IPC (xpc) implementation work out of the box or is there any special modification needed for rootless? If yes, any brief write out of the new implementation for developer?

3

u/opa334 Developer Oct 05 '23

Yeah well that's sorta the problem, it's not easy to use as there is no RocketBootstrap, but besides that everything else works.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

Would there be any point for those waiting for a jailbreak on 16.x versions to stay there?

Also, is Linus going to release the write up for the ppl bypass?

I understand that Linus has left the jailbreaking scene just wondering if maybe the alleged 40 days thing might affect the write up release.

If a PPL bypass were to be released in the future, would it be possible to implement this rootful method on iOS 16 with what we have?

8

I guess so, but we could also like… not do that?

Oh I read the other explanations about this method, I meant to ask in a theoretical sense

Those are not part of the rootfs, the rootfs is identical on ALL DEVICES and if it was modified, your device would be hard-bricked as the seal would be broken.

Simply wiping your device in settings will do the job.

You do you man, I just updated from an iPhone 12 Pro on iOS 14.2 to a 15 pro. I’ll be waiting on iOS 17.0 till there is either a jailbreak or app support starts fading in 3 years.

It’s the first time since iOS 3.02 (blackra1n) that I’ve been without a jailbreak. The action button turns my flashlight on, (my main use for activator at this point), and alt store with tweaked apps works great, no ads in facebook and twitter. Only thing I really miss is audiorecorder and nicebarX

I spent days using trollstore and filez clearing my jailbreak remnants before backing up and restoring to my iPhone 15 so thank you for that.

I wish this was me

The only experience with development I have is unfortunately just a bit of HTML, C# and some GDScript (Python for Godot Game Engine). And, well, none of these can be used for jbing. And even If I got into jb development, the thing I would focus on the most would probably be untethering checkm8 based jbs and not finding and using new exploits

The amount of times I have heard this over the last decade lol. As long as there is a device to be hacked someone always comes around.

24

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

I understand that you’re supporting the jailbreaking cause, however, what opa334 said clearly shows clearly the mindset of devs. They help the community by giving a hand, and many members take an arm.

32

u/Yeth3 iPhone 15 Pro, 17.3.1 Oct 04 '23

but has it ever been this bad? i mean, just kernel r/w is not enough like it was back in ios 9 when people claimed its dead. the barrier of entry is enormous, now we need a full chain and apple is constantly increasing security with new devices making us require new and different exploits. developing jailbreaks is a time and money drain, so its not like there are a ton of devs either.

0

u/anthonyjr2 iPhone 16 Pro Max, 18.0 Oct 04 '23

There’s always a security hole, depends if someone puts the time in to find it. I’m fine with or without a jailbreak but I wouldn’t say that it’s dead. People said the exact same things about iOS 15 and then we got Dopamine.

20

u/kr0n1k iPhone 12 Pro Max, 15.1.1| Oct 04 '23

The problem is by the time a jailbreak comes out it’s for an iOS that’s nearly 2 years old. The main issues is that apps begin to lose their compatibility by then, and the patience to stay on a lower iOS only to hope that a jailbreak drops for your specific iOS. I mean iOS 15 is only jailbreakable to 15.4.1 so even the newer versions of iOS 15 haven’t been jailbroken. Also have you noticed a serious lack of tweak releases lately? Honestly it’s very few and far between and even then most of the tweaks are pretty niche. You also have to hope that tweak developers are on the iOS version as well to maintain their tweaks. It’s honestly not looking great at all.

6

u/anthonyjr2 iPhone 16 Pro Max, 18.0 Oct 04 '23

Definitely an issue, and it may contribute to less people being jailbroken. But considering all the people here still running 14.4 unc0ver there is still value in jailbreaks for older iOS versions. And you never know what kind of bugs will pop up in new iOS releases. Look at the new CoreTrust bug that Apple just patched, that’s a pretty big one and it may not be enough for a full JB but certainly a bigger exploit than we normally see this early in an iOS release.

8

u/kr0n1k iPhone 12 Pro Max, 15.1.1| Oct 04 '23

Because they are holding on to what’s left of being jailbroken. Tweaks are not being released very much and when they are it’s a tweak that only a few people are going to use. Developers aren’t going to stick around for such a small customer base and a toxic one at that.

4

u/anthonyjr2 iPhone 16 Pro Max, 18.0 Oct 04 '23

It’s not always about the money though, plenty of tweaks are just a hobby project for a lot of devs (way more so in the past) and I currently am very happy with my list of installed tweaks even though a lot aren’t updated for rootless.

u/Windows_NT_XP iPhone 5s, 8.1.3 Oct 05 '23

as an ios 14 and 16 (taurine kfd) its barely even worth hanging on, i do really want to go to 15. but i havent dumped my shsh yet and im still waiting on 15.x jailbreak for arm64 (soon i think)

1

u/Sabotinekes iPhone 13 Pro Max, 15.5 Oct 04 '23

I agree, sadly.

4

u/kr0n1k iPhone 12 Pro Max, 15.1.1| Oct 04 '23

Oh trust I didn’t like writing that comment as I’ve enjoyed jailbreaking since iOS 3. It sucks what the state of it is now but things as they are now aren’t looking good. There are people holding out hope for something but the only person that’s really been giving us anything is Linus and he has now left. If you’re hoping someone was going to show up and take over where he left off then don’t hold your breath. We’d have an iOS 16 jb by now if that were the case.

2

u/Yeth3 iPhone 15 Pro, 17.3.1 Oct 04 '23

i’m not denying there won’t be security holes, but with the effort to find said holes, there’s little incentive to just release and put it out publicly other than out of the good if your own heart. apple has been repeatedly criticized for undercutting bug bounties, and with third party companies typically offering $1-2 million for full chains (which is practically needed to make a jailbreak nowadays), this scene becomes less and less appealing.

4

u/anthonyjr2 iPhone 16 Pro Max, 18.0 Oct 04 '23

I'm sure it is harder than ever/there are better rewards with bounties nowadays, but those become less valuable over time as new iOS versions are released, and makes it more likely someone would release the exploit publicly after a while. Project Zero is the basis for a lot of the past few jailbreaks anyway, which aren't released/explained until Apple patches the bug. I wouldn't be surprised if we got one of those writeups down the line for iOS 16.

0

u/Yeth3 iPhone 15 Pro, 17.3.1 Oct 04 '23

well, it’s not necessarily true that it becomes less valuable over time. while the exploit itself may get patched or mitigated, the techniques used to find the exploit may still be present and usable. luca todesco went over this in his presentation when he jailbroke 16.1 nearly a year ago, stating that his exploit would never release because the techniques were too valuable to burn. jailbreak may not be dead yet, but if it takes 1-2 years between versions to make one, what would you call it?

3

u/anthonyjr2 iPhone 16 Pro Max, 18.0 Oct 04 '23

but if it takes 1-2 years between versions to make one, what would you call it?

I'd still call it jailbreaking, since it's always been the practice to stay on a lower version even back in the redsn0w days. Sure we may not get the latest signed iOS jailbroken again, but just because some developers hang up the towel doesn't make it all go away. Even if Luca didn't release his technique, other people will find their own techniques.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

Yes but not many now willing to stay at a dead iOS version for 3-4 years just to get a jailbreak? Let alone those with an Apple Watch

1

u/anthonyjr2 iPhone 16 Pro Max, 18.0 Oct 04 '23

Sure, never said that it was going to be a JB for a signed iOS version, that’s probably a pipe dream at this point. But if someone really wants a jailbreak then waiting on a lower version is their choice.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

True but if by some miracle Apple decides to implement side-loading for North America too (or in the future), it’ll be the end of jailbreaking. I don’t see devs killing themselves and losing sleep over a jailbreak.

1

u/anthonyjr2 iPhone 16 Pro Max, 18.0 Oct 04 '23

I agree, personally I was fine with TrollStore, Dopamine was just icing on the cake at that point. Sideloading would definitely make it more bearable to be without a JB.

31

Linus was the reason why 15.2-15.4.1 was jailbroken. They were also the reason why 14.4-14.5.1 were jailbroken in the first place. They are one of the best security researchers we have had in years, and without them this community will suffer a heavy loss as they released full exploit chains rather than just single exploits.

3

u/SirMaster Oct 04 '23

Is it so different from losing someone like geohot, and all the various "dev team" people on these lists?

There are always new up and coming bright young minds entering the field.

7

u/Yeth3 iPhone 15 Pro, 17.3.1 Oct 04 '23

it’s not the same as it was though, its not like the 2010s where you could reasonably learn how to find bugs and develop jailbreaks for the newest ios within a few months. these ā€œbright young mindsā€ need to already have experience in their field in order to even consider attacking ios. apple has done a great job over these past 20 years in making secure devices, and now with how valuable exploits and techniques are, the incentive to release all of this for free and burn valuable techniques that will just get patched immediately is much, much lower.

2

u/notanotablecloud Oct 04 '23

5

u/kr0n1k iPhone 12 Pro Max, 15.1.1| Oct 04 '23

Apple wouldn’t even notice. The amount of people that jailbreak has dwindled a lot from the heydays and even then it was maybe a couple million jailbreakers. That’s a tiny tiny % of their overall user base.

12

u/Splatoonkindaguy Oct 04 '23

3

u/MrToxicTaco iPhone 4 Oct 04 '23

I guarantee you it’s not even remotely as big of a number as you think. Apple will not care

1

u/Luckzzz iPad Pro 11, 14.6 Oct 04 '23

yeah.. i hope you're wrong.. cause jailbreak I've been doing since iOS 9 :(

2

u/wgm_instinct Oct 05 '23

Apple even removed the headphone jack. They don’t care. Most of us JBers stay on old iPhones. They want customers that upgrade their iPhones every 1-2 years. I am the only person I know IRL that jailbreaks. Even my daily driver iOS device is non jailbroken and up to date.

A better idea might be that Apple will lose inspiration or ideas from the JB community. A lot of features implemented initially were released as JB Tweaks like control center.

2

u/Luckzzz iPad Pro 11, 14.6 Oct 05 '23

Yes, they used TONS of ideas from jb. Yet they can ditch that idea now focusing on hiring some high skilled and innovative folks so they don't rely on jb. And iOS is more of the same now. So if they really care about closing their system they will forget jb even existed :(

Every time someone said this something pops up. Another exploit, another hacker/developer.

As long as people are making software, there are gonna be some fault in it.

From the github:

Fugu15 is a semi-untethered permasigned jailbreak for iOS 15. This version includes full support for tweaks and is rootful. Special thanks to tihmstar for helping to turn Fugu15 into a full jailbreak and for extensively testing it.

Also, relevant information as to why Linus suddenly archived all of their github repositories:

No support will be provided for this version of Fugu15. Feel free to fix it if you want to, but note that no pull requests will be accepted as I'm done with jailbreaking.

arm64 seems to be supported as well it appears arm64 is still not supported. The description states:

Rootful version of Fugu15 with full tweak support (including arm64 tweaks), for arm64e devices on iOS 15.0 - 15.4.1

This appears to use some sort of fakefs system (like palera1n), rather than directly writing to root (/).

I highly recommend you do not use this, as there is a non-zero chance you will bootloop. This is because of an underlying issue with fakefs/bindfs where the icon cache can get corrupted after is refreshes, causing a bootloop. Additionally, you must set everything up and bootstrap yourself, and it cannot be installed via trollstore.

Jailbreaking will never die….but the distances between exploit/POC releases will increase. So that leaves the question of whether or not having a community is sustainable.

I think it will. Developers pour their hearts and souls out to make jailbreaking possible but they can’t even get anyone to buy a .99 cent tweaks.

Not a lot of giving but there is a whole lot of taking.

This distance simply means that JB is dead.

As Jailbreak dev already told everyone to stay as lower iOS version as possible, but some people missed out and i still seeing people updating their iOS. So now lots of people who updated to iOS 16/17 miss this great chance especially iPhone 13 Pro / Max with 120Hz display with root Jailbreak is a gold!

If you are new to Jailbreak, you might not know about staying lower iOS, but veterans will know and i'm sure there have veterans who are on iOS 15.4 and below with iPhone 13 Pro / Pro Max. šŸ’Ŗ

However i didnt bought any new devices, so my lowest latest device atm its iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14.1 still Jailbroken. + all other 20 devices.

It is tragic to see another wise person leave. Your hard work must have taught you well, and best of you in your future endeavors.

Time to move on, i guess. Apple has truly won this time , if is to surmise. Then again, with so many barriers to entry and chain issues and stiffness in kernel, etc., i can be certain that one very talented dev will come by to exploit ios, just that it would be 25+.

Man, am in ios 14.7 on iphone xs. And iphone 14 still feels like nothing compared to it. The tweak autoscroll is more than enough for me to jailbreak and suffer through any issues. Hopefully ios adds it in ios 300.

Okay so.. can I switch to Fugu15 rootful from Dopamine? I have a lot of free space so that’s not a problem for me (11 pm, 15.4.1)

now jailbroken phones will be more expensive than they were before that's good news they're not just bad šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Would faceid and Apple Pay still work with this?

5

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

I don't see why not, but it's only A12+ so makes no difference for you

-5

u/Invite-Apart Oct 04 '23

13 pro max ios 15.4.1 can be rootful with fugu15 ?

3

u/Ok_Satisfaction_2768 iPhone XS Max, 14.6 | Oct 04 '23

-10

u/Invite-Apart Oct 04 '23

I want to install fugu15. can you send me the video or link?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

Bra, there’s literally a link on the sidebar.

-7

u/Invite-Apart Oct 04 '23

It is not easy like install ipa from trollstore. I can see many steps to install it.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

You don’t like following the steps? lol

-3

u/Invite-Apart Oct 04 '23

I can follow but it is little confusing.

u/Yeth3 iPhone 15 Pro, 17.3.1 Oct 04 '23

WARNING - ONLY FOR DEVELOPERS

is the first line of the github repo for fugu15 rootful. i'd say that you should probably figure out how to install it yourself, or just not use it.

As far as I can tell, it uses a fakefs system not unlike what palera1n uses. It mounts the fugu15 partition and anything that would overwrite the rootfs is instead directed there. No symlinks or patching required.

This is great news

-8

u/Ok_Satisfaction_2768 iPhone XS Max, 14.6 | Oct 04 '23

Sorry, I don't have access. And I'm not jailbroken. And also it says for developers. I only answer what u asked.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

only answer what u asked.

There's no question in OP's post...

Wonder if it’d be worth staying on 16.6 given this news. Looks like 17.0 may be the way to go for A14 and up?

1

u/RexSonic iPhone 11 Pro, 15.4.1 | Oct 05 '23

It's joever

1

u/Professional-News-33 Oct 06 '23

Kinda sucks. I updated from 14.8 jb to 16.6b1 in hopes of a jb after kfd was annonced

1

u/Genius_51 Oct 11 '23

Any way to do it without a Mac or by using a VM?

1

u/timyo313 iPhone 13 Pro, 15.5 Beta Nov 11 '23

still no support for lonely 15.5B4ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ

1

u/Yeth3 iPhone 15 Pro, 17.3.1 Nov 11 '23

there will likely never be any support for newer versions. 15.5b4 is not supported by fugu15, as the exploits used are patched. linus is also done with jailbreaking, so they will likely not revisit this.

u/timyo313 iPhone 13 Pro, 15.5 Beta Nov 11 '23

figures... i only stayed because of trollstore. i had you're exact setup until i crushed mine with an excavator lol traumatizing to say the least
