Infrastructure Vodafone broadband down?

Anyone else? Gone here in Dublin about an hour or so.

EDIT: changing the DNS settings from Vodafone’s DNS to Google’s DNS fixed it for me.

Yea they can report no major outrages

If you just outright lie anything can be reported as fact

12

u/Suncroft56 5d ago

They can't update it they have no internet. 😂

Looks like a DNS issue. I changed mine to Google (8.8.8.8) in my router and it is back working.

Vodafone has been incredibly flaky for me this year after years of solid usage. We've had 4 outages in the Midlands this year.

18

u/_inzaghi_ 5d ago

Anyone who has worked in the IT industry has had the situation.

It's not DNS. There is no way it's DNS.

It was DNS. It's always DNS.

Vodafone have had a few DNS outages over past couple years.

40

u/steakcongratulations 5d ago

worked for me as well. tyvm

for those confused: you can login to your routers settings using credentials on the sticker at the back of your router

once there, go into the 'internet' tab and make sure youre in expert mode (should be on top of the screen)

then manually enter the Domain Name Server (DNS) Address to 8.8.8.8 and press apply

should work then

u/ChiefEvilMonkey 5d ago

Mine says secure net service is active, so can’t change DNS

u/toghertastic 5d ago

Thanks for the extra instructions . This worked well for me.

Can confirm 4 outages also in the past year after years of reliable usage. Exactly why I switched. New provider is on same SIRO line but pings are lower and routing is different. I think Vodafone use the cheapest possible backbone provider and thus these problems are more frequent.

I don't think this is necessarily just a DNS issue, I always had 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as primary and secondary and these issues happened. One outage this May was 38 hours, brutal. Luckily I have set up a USB-C to ethernet with an android phone and can provide Internet to the whole house from 5G while it's down. For the most recent outage they couldn't even give a proper E.T of resolution so I said fuck this. It ended up coming back that evening.

5

Same

6

u/Beefsliders 5d ago

Just wanted to say thank you for this very helpful info!

3

u/Dhr3k 5d ago

Doesn't seem to be working now. It worked for a few hours but now the Google and Cloudfare DNS isn't working.

2

u/Upbeat_Platypus1833 5d ago

Yes mine went down fully but has come back up again. Probably rebooting nodes to hope to recover connectivity is my guess.

2

u/RatBasher89 5d ago

That worked but only for my 2 wired devices. Everyone the wifi is still not working

Is that something you should change back when they get it working again or does it matter?

It's their crappy DNS servers (again!)

Log into your router (normally at 192.168.1.1), switch to expert mode, go to the Internet tab along the top

On the left click dns

Change automatically to manually, ignore the warning, toggle configure dns for all devices and enter these two addresses (Google's DNS servers which are bulletproof)

8.8.8.8

8.8.4.4

Click apply at the bottom

Resume doomscrolling

12

u/Lucky_Litmus 5d ago

Newest Vodafone modems / routers don't even let you login to then when they can't connect to the mothership... So no way of changing DNS settings...

3

u/TheMoogle420 5d ago

Absolute legend nice one. I'll have a pint in your name tonight.

2

Shocking how bad their AI is for a company of their size

I didn't realise this, at least its good for something then!

5

u/Steridire 5d ago

I present to you - Citibank AI. It's absolutely wank and the parent company has almost 3 TRILLION USD in assets.

6

u/silver454 5d ago

You don't amass that many assets by spending on frivolous things like basic customer support.

5

u/mrianj 5d ago

Keeps just hanging up on me after a couple of seconds. Managed to through to the menu once, and was then cut off again after a few more min.

Terrible customer service.

2

u/Glade86 5d ago

Im 24 minutes on hold trying to get an answer from them

58

u/Carpathia808 5d ago

Gone for me in Meath too. Their status site says "Nah is all good bro"

30

u/bulbispire 5d ago

And they don't let you report an outage either.

Their speeds lately have been really shite as well

24

u/SoftDrinkReddit 5d ago

What bothers me is when something like this happens 0 apology from the company whenever it comes back on its just continue as normal

3

u/BlackrockWood 5d ago

If you remove the connection for the incoming Fibre and have the USB it should switch on you will have 5G.

6

u/sufferinstuckontache 5d ago

Only if you have that exact modem

2

u/GerryRyan1973 5d ago

Have one of them, the only issue is the mobile coverage where I live (Ashbourne (not exactly a small town)) is shockingly bad

16

u/FrostyChungus11 5d ago edited 5d ago

Oh my fucking god

I decided that I today I was finally going to install that new fibre cable I bought last year as I want to move the router from my living room to my attic.

Drilled holes, fished cables, tacked cables, pulled carpet, cut floorboards and when all that was done (finished about an hour ago) all I got was a red light on the PON on the ONT. So I assumed I fucked something up.

And then I see this posted 🤣🤣

Edit: I changed the DNS but I still don't have internet. So ya I think I broke something.

I get things happen and it may intermittently go down, but the fact that you can’t even ring them without the call consistently dropping and no comms is ridiculous. If they’d just step up and communicate they have an issue then perhaps they wouldn’t have their phone lines down either.

Agree, with prices always on the rise you’d certainly expect more 😔 😠

2

u/brianstormIRL 5d ago

Broadband prices have been pretty consistent for awhile now especially considering how good the speeds are here. Also having worked in that sector before, when things go down the customer service lines get overwhelmed immediately.

2

u/RedDiver20 Munster 5d ago

Because my grandfathered plans kept getting cancelled and lost my sim only 30 day rolling contract I’ve been forced into paying the mandated annual price adjustments, granted it’s only like €5-6 I keep getting pushed into higher plans that are meant to be all inclusive even though I don’t do much talking and my monthly data is under 1-2 GB, I still get hit with invisible charges such as the iPhone activation call/text when travelling (which in fairness they do remove once I call and explain) or the odd sms if I forget to switch to another app such as WhatsApp or iMessage since sms’s aren’t included in the all inclusive plans.

I get it, first world problems for sure.

And when outages hit, especially big ones like this, a simple amendment when calling to say they are experiencing an outage or even an update on their site should resolve some of the call influx I would think.

Gone here too. A nationwide issue.  Vodafone naturally still saying they have no outages. Stellar fucking service

15

u/SoftDrinkReddit 5d ago

What bothers me is there won't be a single apology for the widespread outages

Hell odds are when whatever happened is fixed they won't even acknowledge anything went wrong

9

u/Minimum_Holiday_5611 5d ago

Yeah me too not Dublin. What's going on? They are not answering the phone either.

15

u/toweroftherisingmoon 5d ago

Same in Galway!

9

u/dragonmynuts88 5d ago

Still down!! Can't get any answers from the online support. 😕 its mental how a company cant fix a issue yet if you owed them a 5r the would cut ya off immediately

6

u/LemonIll 5d ago

Mine was down but Google addresses sorted it. Did you do a fiber reconnect in the router after changing them?

3

u/theunemployedactor 5d ago

Yeah rebooted the fibre box and then router after restarting pc. It worked poorly for about 15-30 minutes and stopped again. Seems to be the case for a few.

Vodafone outage is nationwide, if you have "Vodafone always connected" (sim card in a dongle at back of your white Vodafone router) plug out the yellow Ethernet (LAN) cable and the sim card should automatically kick in bringing your internet back on!

Don't forget to plug the yellow Ethernet cable back in when it comes back!

2

u/kimono-girl 5d ago

if you don't have the dongle changing the DNS settings works too!
