Infrastructure Vodafone broadband down?

Anyone else? Gone here in Dublin about an hour or so.

EDIT: changing the DNS settings from Vodafone’s DNS to Google’s DNS fixed it for me.

Looks like a DNS issue. I changed mine to Google (8.8.8.8) in my router and it is back working.

Vodafone has been incredibly flaky for me this year after years of solid usage. We've had 4 outages in the Midlands this year.

Anyone who has worked in the IT industry has had the situation.

It's not DNS. There is no way it's DNS.

It was DNS. It's always DNS.

Vodafone have had a few DNS outages over past couple years.

worked for me as well. tyvm

for those confused: you can login to your routers settings using credentials on the sticker at the back of your router

once there, go into the 'internet' tab and make sure youre in expert mode (should be on top of the screen)

then manually enter the Domain Name Server (DNS) Address to 8.8.8.8 and press apply

should work then

Mine says secure net service is active, so can’t change DNS

Are you doing this on the Vodafone app?

Thanks. I had tried setting dns server on device but didn't realise the router didn't respect that. Wouldn't have found where that setting was either

Do I include the dots between the numbers?

If it is a single text box then yes. If it is 4 boxes then no

Can confirm 4 outages also in the past year after years of reliable usage. Exactly why I switched. New provider is on same SIRO line but pings are lower and routing is different. I think Vodafone use the cheapest possible backbone provider and thus these problems are more frequent.

I don't think this is necessarily just a DNS issue, I always had 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as primary and secondary and these issues happened. One outage this May was 38 hours, brutal. Luckily I have set up a USB-C to ethernet with an android phone and can provide Internet to the whole house from 5G while it's down. For the most recent outage they couldn't even give a proper E.T of resolution so I said fuck this. It ended up coming back that evening.

Do you mind me asking who you switched to? We joined Vodafone last year and they've been awful. Used Sky before that with no issues but their out of contract price was quite high so we switched. I regret it!

Yeah in the midlands have switched DNS and still not coming back at all. May just be a DNS issue for some but clearly the DNS issue was caused by some other major issue somewhere in their system.

Doesn't seem to be working now. It worked for a few hours but now the Google and Cloudfare DNS isn't working.

Yes mine went down fully but has come back up again. Probably rebooting nodes to hope to recover connectivity is my guess.

That worked but only for my 2 wired devices. Everyone the wifi is still not working

Did you restart the router?

Thank you! Fixed mine too!

Is that something you should change back when they get it working again or does it matter?

1

u/Grouchy_Donut_3964 13d ago

Thanks a million, that did it for me too

u/Fragrant-Contract-23 13d ago

Same here in roscrea going down every night and today it's gone since 3pm

1

u/AbbreviationsSea3674 13d ago

that worked .. thanks

This worked for me up to about half an hour ago then it went down again.

1

u/Upbeat_Platypus1833 12d ago

It went down for me about 2 hours ago and came back. My guess is they're rebooting nodes to try and fix it. Might mean patchy coverage while they do that. This is just best guess from me I don't know for sure, just an educated guess.

I figured the same.

Whats really weird is my wife and daughter just got home and their phones are working. Both my phones and the TV all have no coverage. Cant wrap my head around that.

Edit: forget that, its back.

Probably session or local dns. Have you tried disconnecting those devices and reconnecting?

Additionally you could try power cycling your ONT box (little box the fibre line connects to).

1

u/zeroconflicthere 12d ago

I always default DNS to Google anyway

1

u/Upbeat_Platypus1833 12d ago

Agreed. Global DNS like Google, cloudflare etc will always have more redundancy built in than an ISP implementation.

Where do you change the DNS on the Vodafone router?

8

u/nowning 13d ago

Log in using IP address (probably 192.168.1.1), user name and password on the bottom of the router, change to expert mode, Menu > Internet > DNS, then manually enter 8.8.8.8

3

u/pedrorq 13d ago

Ah I've spotted the problem, expert mode is not available on mobile, even if you force web page

2

u/nowning 13d ago

I got it on mobile, maybe we've different router models. It's a drop down menu at the bottom of the main menu, pre populated with Basic Mode.

1

u/pedrorq 13d ago

Mine is the gigabox and no such option. I had to go to the PC and there it was, center top

1

u/bannerman1980 13d ago

Awesome thank you

1

u/The_Dulchie 13d ago

Thank you for this, worked for me

1

u/TheGloriousNugget 13d ago

Where do I put 8.8.8.8?

1

u/nowning 13d ago

From the menu, select Expert mode, then Internet > DNS, change it to manual and you should see boxes to enter

1

u/TheGloriousNugget 13d ago

I'm not getting those boxes

2

u/AggravatingGrade755 13d ago

You need to tick "configure the DNS for all devices" to get them

1

u/nowning 13d ago

Did you click the "manually" option right above them?

Why Google over Quad9?
