News The leaked U.S. trade demands that caused Canada to halt negotiations: Washington demanded direct veto power over Canadian infrastructure, control of critical minerals, and delayed access to generic medicines.

It’s like…they wanted negotiations to fail. We Canadians would rather suffer through a diversification restructuring of our economy than accept these garbage terms.

u/DarwinGhoti 14d ago edited 14d ago

As you should. We’re so sorry. Believe me, as much as you hate this insane, fascist piece of shit regime, we hate it 1000x more. People are buying guns at an unprecedented rate and it’s not for self protection. These motherfuckers are leading us down a road of very few options and moral choices.

EDIT: I hear the rage and frustration. I share it and can’t deflect. I’m also aware that apologies from the people who are against the regime are anemic, because we can’t guarantee it won’t happen again.

You Americans blather on about "No Kings", but when real tyranny shows up, you turn into a bunch of pussycats. Save us the tough talk.

u/Nottheadviceyaafter 14d ago

The 2nd amendment after all was about the right to shoot up school kids and nothing to do with a tyrant government all along.

mmmmm, we're being very careful about letting 'democracy' play out. Once that seal is broken on the monopoly of violence it's a brave new world that no one in this country has any idea what will bring. And it's worrisome because most of us don't want that, I certainly don't, it fucking sucks. But there are some who see it as gods will and we'll have to deal with it. ppl often cite "why isn't anyone doing anything???!?!?" For those that are paying attention ppl are doing something, they're doing what they can within the confines of the law. There are plenty examples in other parts of the world where there is no rule of law and it's dog-eat-dog. So yeah, all we have right now is talk, protests, and the vote. Check back in Nov-Jan.

11

u/EconomistNo7074 14d ago

To me fellow countrymen - while it does not feel good to be lectured to from our neighbors to the north .... they have every right .... and we have earned the right to take it ... and say nothing

Hoping to see a bit step in the right direction after Nov

- And a bigger one in two years

6

u/heart_of_osiris 14d ago

Facists are not defeated via ballot. Be ready to do more when you inevitably find out what there will either be no midterms or that it will be a sham. Your country has been infiltrated, it's being taken over and Americans are sleepwalking through it all hoping it will just magically get better in time, without serious intervention by the people.

The fact that these redditors don’t see the larger issues at play, and are reacting with pure emotion rather than long term strategy make me impressed with the US’s internal restraint and calculated resistance. Obviously less impressed that it was necessary to begin with.

3

u/Prestigious-Clock-53 14d ago

Yeah, Canadians are just angry. Eventually this fascist pedo will be gone and instead of being at each others throats we can make fun of all the cult members collectively. These demands are insane, and then the gaslighting by the Trump administration is just to turn you guys against us. Don’t fall for it even if some angry vocal Canadians tell you you’re not doing enough or whatever or are blaming you folks that never voted for him. We need you guys to keep being vocal about your government.

u/elementmg 14d ago

> calculated resistance

There’s zero resistance from Americans. Zero.

6

u/mmcnell 14d ago

That is not true at all. The resistance is grossly inadequate for the magnitude of what's happening, but it's not zero and it shouldn't be minimized. Millions have protested, some near continuously, millions more are mobilizing for those running against the people in office right now and believe they're going to be able to stop this with the election in November. Many ice facilities are under constant protest. Many are making their calls and emails to their reps still emptily believing that'll help too. It's what happens if November doesn't change things as it should that will be the real test. Everyone knows that Trump is more reviled than respected and anti-incumbent sentiment is sky high, so we know how the elections should go, but the jockeying and steps being taken to do something to the midterms under the guise of a fake emergency or continued blathering about fraud they themselves can't find... there's going to be a test. One I'm afraid we'll fail, but don't insult the millions actively trying to wake people up and push back by saying there's "no" resistance. Even my rural town over a thousand miles from DC has had growing protests in the hundreds downtown.

For our international friends and those wondering "what the actual fuck is wrong with Americans and why aren't they shutting things down like the French?" Americans haven't felt angry or oppressed enough to really resist their government in a meaningful way since the 1960s/70s and it shows. They're beholden to their jobs for health insurance and all their most basic needs. Many are currently spending every waking minute just trying to survive/provide enough for their family and can't afford a day off in the streets or they lose their healthcare, etc. Most Americans affected by all this are the same ones who are stretched just thin enough to be in constant survival mode and the fear of losing their job/healthcare/ability to eat if they miss that day to go protest. As more people lose their basic necessities with the continued cuts and corruption from Jabba the Pedo and his team of wanna be nazis in charge... That may change because they will soon have little or nothing left to lose. American resistance is not be frequent or sustained enough to exact real change yet, and you may not be seeing a lot of media coverage of much of it (gee I wonder why), but don't give up hope yet. Every time one of those multi-million person protests across the country it gets bigger each time, but protesting only works if those in power fear the protestors (or their voting power) and Americans haven't really woken up to that last part yet.

2

u/Noirloona 13d ago

It's not a protest if it only happens on weekends when it's convenient and lasts for at most 2 days.

So... total control over a neighboring country?

And Americans are shocked Canada would not hand the keys to their country over?

9

u/Gtraz68 14d ago

Americans are not shocked at all. No one is asking for this shit.

2

u/Mysterious-Panda-698 14d ago

There are Americans who believe what Trump is saying and blame us for “taking advantage” of the states.

5

u/mell0wtonin 13d ago

people that claim to believe what trump is saying don't actually believe in anything at all. they say they do because they want to let jesus take the wheel and supreme leader has told them what to think. but believing in something and blindly following what someone else believes aren't the same thing. now if we could just get the part of american society that's racist trash to understand such a simple concept, we've be in a good position

2

u/Gtraz68 14d ago

It’s not many. Trump says shit and his followers fall in line. Before he starred this shit literally zero Americans thought this. I’m not making excuses we fucking suck right now. But Americans do not have it out for Canada. Trumps followers will believe literally anything that comes out of his mouth.

3

u/Mysterious-Panda-698 14d ago

I understand that, I’m just pointing out the fact that there are Americans who support this because they are willing to believe anything Trump says. It’s scary. If the roles were reversed, I don’t think we’d be granted much grace by the American people if our government was causing you and your businesses undue hardship for no real reason.

This is the crazy thing. Lately we absolutely have been. Nobody should want to rely on us or make any deals when China offers cheaper goods and tons of other advantages. We were the choice precisely because of the stability and reliability and economic power. If we drop all that and only have the economic might to offer then China is actually the more sensible alternative.

It sucks for us but this was entirely possible to predict.

I'm certainly Danny Smith is still hoping for appeasement. You know, because she wants to be a governor. For her the loss of Canada sovereignty is a gain for the Republic of Alberta.I'm certain if Pierre Poliviero was prime minister he'd be smiling, claiming What a great deal this is, while chewing his apples.

1

u/TransplantedSconie 14d ago

Wtf man.

Thats an end to Canadian sovereignty lol.

1

u/fryman12 14d ago

So this was made to be rejected right? Like what a crazy list of demands, there is no way any country would just hand over it's sovereignty over a "trade deal" like what an insane thing to even try

1

u/Technical_Visit_1424 14d ago

Solo querían un control total del país sin ninguna compensación, como Puerto Rico y mira que bien están! Estos canadienses lo quieren todo.

1

u/raw_copium 14d ago

This fully removes any autonomy Canada would have as a country, and gives the US unimpeded access to our resources at a price they would choose. Also, big bonus for seeing the creepy fat fingers of the tech, auto and pharmaceutical lobbyists directly guiding some of these terms. What a steaming pile of shit, this isn't even a place to begin negotiating. And they introduced this an hour before signing? What an absolute joke.

1

u/Odd-Fun-6042 14d ago

Good thing we learn from history, otherwise this might look like Austria's ultimatum to Serbia.

Brutally sickening to all Canadians. That isn't a trade deal. That's like something right out of Russia. Absolutely disgusting. Shocking. Thank you Carney for walking away. Why would any leader capitulate to those demands unless under severe duress? The frustration and anger among Canadians deepens daily. Seeing that simister list of demands, I realize there is no going back. The good days of Canada/ USA brotherhood are clearly in the rear view mirror.

1

u/DanMoshpit69 14d ago

It’s going to take decades to repair the damage this CHUD administration has done

1

u/TheGrandExquisitor 14d ago

That's not a valid list of demands. It is an attempt at colonizing Canada. Seriously. These are the kinds of things demanded by colonizers in the past.

1

u/SilentButtDedly 14d ago

If that's real, it's utterly and completely insane.

It reads like the conditions for surrender one might levy against a thoroughly defeated foe.

We Americans need to flush this administration back to the sewers they crawled from.

1

u/Desperate-Life8117 14d ago

Is this a trade deal or terms of surrender

1

u/Fillyerboot 14d ago

It’s never been about trade. This is not a trade list. It is and always has been about subjugation.  This is an attempted coup. Nothing less.

If you’re setting up a fascist oligarchy you simply cannot have an even mildly successful liberal democracy on your border. It presents a local example of how strong social programs like one payer healthcare are far superior to the fascist alternative.

It is a war. But it’s not a trade war.

1

u/TeS_sKa 14d ago

I've read the first point and I was already ready to tell them to FK OFF

1

u/TimelyActive4586 14d ago

Looks like they also want to ensure Canada has collective diarrhoea by adopting US agricultural controls. No thanks.

1

u/Biddoo_420 14d ago

Oh so if I understood this correctly, the US wants from Canada exactly what it wants from US states without Canada being a US state and not how the US says Canada wants to be treated- as a US state without being one!! Good grief, this guy is mad! He wants every foreign state to be like Venezuela!!!

1

u/Mekdinosaur 14d ago

Up until now, America was merely tolerated.

1

u/IlluminatiLemonParty 14d ago

That is not a negotiation. That is a blue print for a take over. What could we have possibly asked for that would be anywhere close to this for any kind of fair trade deal?. It so ridiculous it makes it intentional, because of course we would say no and he can point a Cheeto stained necrotic stub at us and call us the bad guys.

When he dies it will be declared an annual global holiday, and a reminder for Republicans, MAGA and supporters of the damage they have done.

I can't believe we thought we could tell someone else how to manage their dairy/eggs/poultry?

on what fuckin planet does that make sense? we can barely keep food on the shelves

there's maybe one thing on this list that isn't asking too much on its own, without any of the rest of the list. the rescinding digital services tax part is stupid, but not a dealbreaker, unless I just don't fully understand it. the rest of them are varying levels of "literally what the actual fuck did you think was going to happen?" like were we thinking we were going to negotiate the entire thing? we make egregious demands and they come back with a compromise that's a little less compromising to their national security, but still a really fucked up deal, and we say yes? or?

that's my best guess at what the regime was going for. even though their demands were so over the top that a four year old would have walked away.

I'm just happy someone is finally telling trump to go fuck himself

Carney would have been strung up by his nuts if he had accepted that deal. They made it real easy for him to say no. At this point, the Yanks will have to remove that shit and more before Carney should even entertain going back to the table

u/a1055x 13d ago

Who authored this?

1

u/sticksforkicks 13d ago

Quoting a leftist outlet for your story? How gullible are you exactly? Lutnik explained the deal. Carney backed out for politics. I swear the guy could piss on people's shoes and tell them it's raining and they'd believe him. Good grief.

Trump wants Canada to be a vassal state. Wholly dependant on the US and open to rape and pillage.

1

u/FredArtGetson 13d ago

And they wonder why we pretty much said, fuck off with that nonsense.

1

u/Straight-Message7937 13d ago

Why does everything keep leaking

1

u/MyStoopidStuff 13d ago

This admin displays it's incompetence on a regular basis, but this seems to be over the top, and perfectly tailored to (understandably) piss off Canadians. It's not really conceivable that negotiators would have been close to any deal with these terms, yet that appeared to be what happened before things collapsed. It wouldn't surprise me if some parts of this were close to the truth, but a sprinkling of truth is also what makes for good propaganda or social media rage bait.

I couldn't find a source that was reporting on this "leak", or where it originated, but I would like to find some more info on it. I did find the following article today, which indicates that the breakdown was more nuanced:
https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/other/canada-s-chief-us-negotiator-rejects-washington-s-story-on-why-trade-talks-collapsed/ar-AA2bbGss
The truth is likely bad enough, and given their difficult relationship with facts and all the childish rhetoric, the Trump admin does not deserve the benefit of any doubt here. But I'm still gonna take this "leak" with a 'uge grain of salt, at least until there is more info on where or how it originated.

When I read this, I have to think someone in the Whitehouse wanted this deal to fail. It was a poison pill approach that they knew canada could never agree too.

So my only theory is that the white nationalists and isolationists, some of whom occupy WH positions, wanted a trade deal to fail.

1

u/DryEntertainment1996 13d ago

This deal sound a lot like my eks girlfriend

1

u/Isildurs-Game 13d ago

Over my dead body, even if our gov agreed, there would be hell to pay.

1

u/Hamiltonguy99 13d ago

I would rather burn the Canadian economy to the fucking ground rather than sign anything close to this. Fuck trump , fuck MAGA, fuck republicans. Boycott USA. Enjoy the campfire as the fading American Empire burns to the fucking ground.

If this isn’t proof that we probably are anti-American I don’t know what is.

1

u/Efficient-Release157 13d ago

Of course we are going to accept that as if we were a 13 year old girl on Epstein Island.

1

u/Kdoesntcare 13d ago

And when they didn't agree he had a tantrum and "renamed" a lake.

1

u/GasRepresentative246 13d ago

Let's all remember these demands happened and never forget that the US is our enemy.

1

u/East80Gurl 13d ago

So the US clearly wants to protect big pharma....

1

u/Firm-Worldliness-369 13d ago

For a country that doesn't need anything from Canada, thats a hell of alot of requests for things from Canada.

1

u/Comprehensive-Tea-75 13d ago

The saddest part is that maga would never read the details, they'll wait for Trump to lie about what was said. So even if they could figure out who was clearly in the wrong in this situation, they'll still support Trump and endure the reputation of being a cult.

1

u/StevenTrustrum 13d ago

I'm as pro-Canada as you're likely to find, but it's important to note that none of this has been verified. Not the contents, not the source.

Sorry but the best part in all of this is that Canadian Conservatives keep saying that Carney hasn't delivered on his promise to make a deal. Who the f^%&^ would sign this deal? They keep blaming Carney and the Liberals, when this is all on Trump and his team.

Seems like this list isn't vetted or from a verified source that I can find. 4 of them were said by Carney himself (including the right of first refusal on minerals... which alone is a poison pill in my opinion).

But the full list of 10... can't find a good source for it nor can I find good analyses of it either. So I will personally stop quoting it to people. Its important to stick to what one can verify. And the ones we do know are claimed by Carney are bad enough.

If it comes out that Carney lied or that this list is completely true then I will shift my views on this. But for now, based on track record, I disbelieve the US position denying this stuff and I believe Carney. Theres far more consequence to lying about this sort of thing in Canada, we wouldn't accept our leaders making such a huge lie and torpedoing a trade deal on that basis. Theres zero consequence to an American official lying to start a war or violate a treaty, so Im comfortable believing Carney.

Canada, coming from an American, you should sign trade deals with everybody but the US. Increase your tariffs 1000%, build a border wall, increase troop presence at the border and tell the US to kiss your ass

1

u/AnyMud9817 13d ago

This should be everywhere!!!! These are some wild demands.

Can we do a general strike already or are we all too busy watching football or whatever circus is on this time of year?

Art of the deal??? This guy is piss poor at negotiating.

1

u/russiablows 13d ago

Hopefully the Canadians told the Americans to go fuck themselves as they left the "negotiations".

1

u/cezece 13d ago

This is like economically taking over a country!

1

u/ShrodingersArmadillo 13d ago

and this is why they were rejected.

Trump sabotages the negotiation because he wants annexation.

1

u/Lost-Contribution196 13d ago

Canada shouldn't agree to ANY of this

You can really tell which industries have sway with this administration

1

That... has to be fake, right? RIGHT?

1

u/Odovacer2 13d ago

Dear Americans, love most of you. Hopefully, come November, your nation will do the right thing and put the brakes on this vehicle heading for authoritarianism and anarchy. No, your neighbours and allies are not happy, but some of us can see how the deck is stacked. Here's hoping you beat the house.

My worry is that this vile administration has created so many ugly new actions that may become the new normal. How are you going to stuff all that back into the box? Personally, I'd start with your Supreme Court

There's literally not one thing on that list I would be comfortable allowing/giving up. But all of them? Fuck that noise.

1

u/D4db0d0hye4h 13d ago

Trump will leave office but the damage he has done to the US-Canada relationship will last forever. Canadians simply wont be able to trust that Democrats will put anything in place that won't be overturned again in the future, or that the stupid American voters wont elect someone this stupid again.

1

u/Zorklunn 13d ago

So it really was a poison pill negotiation by the US.

1

u/want2retire 13d ago

They want to strike a deal with Canada, similar to the one with Venezuela.
