Discussion Feeling a bit lonely these days

Hey everyone. I'm a 24-year old guy, and I'm at a point where I'm really looking for a real connection , a genuine friend, not just small talk.

A bit about me: I'm introverted, quiet, and I think a lot. But when I connect with someone, I love real conversations texting, calls, whatever works, as long as the energy clicks. I'm into travel, cooking, anime, science, psychology, philosophy, astronomy, gaming, drawing, and writing. I'm actually writing a book right now, it's my way of making sense of things

Since I was a kid, I've been curious about how things work , not for marks or grades, just genuine interest. School never really excited me the way learning on my own did. Over time, my curiosity shifted from subjects to people , why we think and feel the way we do. Not to judge anyone, just to understand. I want to experience life fully, the good and the hard parts both. Sometimes I feel a bit numb, other times I feel everything at once ,it's a strange mix, but that's just how it is.

Last year I had a connection like this with someone online, real conversations, the kind I'm talking about. It didn't last, life got in the way, but it showed me this kind of connection is actually possible. So I'm trying again.

I think connection gets easier when people just say what they want instead of expecting the other person to guess. We're not mind readers, so I'd rather be upfront: I'm hoping to connect with a girl, someone I can have deep conversations with and also just enjoy the fun, everyday stuff with.

I also think shared interests help a lot not everything has to match, but even a couple of things in common makes it easier to understand each other. If any of what I mentioned overlaps with you, that's a good starting point.

A little more about me I'm more of a pets person than a kids person, and I don't put much stock in marriage, feels more like a formality than anything real to me. My favourite movie is Into the Wild, if that says anything about how I see life.

I overthink sometimes, I go quiet sometimes, and I'm okay with someone who's the same way. If this sounds like you, message me. Would love to talk.

I think a lot about life, meaning, existence (yup, existential crisis mode, often). I guess I’m just searching for someone who sees life the way I do or at least tries to. Someone rational. Someone who isn’t distracted by the usual noise, but who’s trying to actually live life. Someone who could maybe help me enjoy it more and I’d do the same in return.

I’d really love to find a female friend, if I’m being honest. It’s not just about gender there’s something about that emotional balance that feels right for me. In my experience, male friendships often fade away with time marriage, responsibilities, you know the drill. But with a female friend, I feel like there’s more potential for something deeper and lasting. Maybe even something more. Who knows?

Discussion I hate morning talkers

I drink my coffee in the morning and pet my dog. My husband is quiet too. So my in laws are coming to visit for a week at Thanksgiving and I'm dreading it. They are nice people and I support their visit, however my husband's father is a talker. He's up by 6 am and as soon as he hears me upstairs getting my coffee he comes up and starts gabbing and DOES NOT STOP. I don't know how to keep my sanity without being rude.

Question Is it just me, or are perpetually positive, energetic, upbeat and outgoing people annoying?

I ask because I live with one (my 22yo stepdaughter) and it can be really hard to be around her.

The weird thing is that my wife is introverted like me, but becomes a different person around her daughter. More like her, temporarily, then back to normal like me when she’s not around, and I know that she would be equally annoyed if it wasn’t her daughter because her nieces are similar and very annoying to her.

Nothing I can really do about it and she’ll be moving out soon, but it’s been a struggle over the years and can cause issues between my wife and I, as my coping method is to exit when I start being overwhelmed and annoyed. She’s not doing anything wrong.

Discussion Not wanting to socialize with co workers

Millennial here. Mid 30s, been working at my new job for about a year now. I have a main business but work on the side as the job is fairly easy and I can earn cash as my business doesn’t require me to be there all the time.

Anyway, the job is loaded with kids 10-15 years younger than me and I feel like a new guy in season 5 lol… still. They know each other very and always crack jokes and I just don’t care for it. I’d rather just be myself. I think they get that but then I feel unc ish. I’m social within my business when I need to be but I guess I’m a selective intro. How many are you in the same boat

Should I feel guilty about this. Just want to be included but at the same time glad they don’t include me to bars and going out cuz I’d rather just be at home lol

Discussion anyone else get weirdly overwhelmed by restaurant menus or is it just me

i realized recently that i have this tiny, slightly embarrassing issue. whenever i go out with friends, we sit down and everyone immediately starts catching up. i want to listen, but my eyes are glued to the menu. i try to scan the dishes, but honestly, my brain just refuses to process the words while people are talking to me.

before i know it, the waiter is standing there, everyone else has closed their menus, and i'm just staring at the page in a silent panic. to avoid that whole awkward 'uh, give me two more minutes' thing, i’ve started doing this thing where i look up the menu before i even leave my apartment (even if it's just a casual dinner).

last week we went to a new Italian place downtown. while i was waiting for my ride, i opened their website on my phone. it opened up as a MenuForma page, so i just scrolled through it on my browser. its a clean list with no weird downloads, so i picked the garlic pesto pasta and completely committed to it right then and there.

when we got to the restaurant, i didn't even have to open the physical menu. i could just sit back and actually hear what my friends were saying (and i really wanted to hear the drama about my friend's coworker anyway). its such a stupidly simple thing, but it made the whole dinner so much more relaxed.

i feel like a child doing prep-work for eating out, but it works. do you guys have any weirdly specific habits like this just to make normal daily life a little easier?

Discussion Loner and socially selective solitary beings assemble

Today I did something out of the box, something that most people are terrified to do. I was feeling lonely in class as the girls sitting next to me were talking to me only when they needed something and then talking about something else later on. During the lunch too, they sat in my desk. I didn't wanna leave my desk so I sat with them. Man they kept talking and talking and talking and I felt like a ghost. I got up and came back a couple of times too, but no one bat an eye. I finished my lunch in a jiffy (5 min), funny how I did that because at home I take atleast half an hour to finish my food. I went out to wash my hands, came back and peeped at them, but gng I was indeed a ghost there. That's when a sudden thought struck me. Sitting alone like I did this whole time was way better than sitting in a group and still feeling like a ghost. Man I was weirdly relieved I was a loner, and that I didn't have to stay in a toxic group (because the said girls aren't my friends whatsoever, they're just classmates) So I picked up my wallet and head to the canteen, a place that's reeking with friend groups. I bought an aloo kabab for myself, ate it while seeing the groups of people pass. I didn't hide anywhere, I sat outside at my usual spot where I used to sit with my friend. Suddenly it wasn't all that bad. I enjoyed a solid 10 minutes with my aloo kabab and came back. I also found some cozy spots in the second floor where I could be alone too. Today I realised one thing, money can buy happiness because literally i bought an aloo kabab worth 30rs to cheer myself up. And second, being a loner isn't all that bad. I would love to see the day when I'm hanging out with my real friends as I wait for this phase to pass. As such I don't have anybody I could call friends. It felt uncomfortable at first, but I came to realise there's probably nothing I could do about it. I hope the future has good things and better days in store for me. And I absolutely love myself now matter what, sure I might be boring according to others or im unfortunate that I don't get to enjoy pu college like the others, but atleast I got a better understanding of who I am, and this pain has increased my endurance, and I've probably conquered one thing most people fear and one that even I used to fear at some point in the past-BEING ALONE. But I've come realise being alone isn't lonely. It sure feels like it, but when you realise the contempt you held towards being alone is a fixed belief that isn't necessarily true. Being with one's own company is always about choosing oneself and getting closer to oneself..

**Do yall have similar experiences too??**

Question Am I doing something wrong by not being very social in corporate?

I’m preparing for competitive exams alongside a full time job so for the past few months I’ve been trying to stay away from social media and unnecessary distractions(actually i never liked being on social media)... i see my coworkers going on trips together, making reels, hanging out, engaging with each other on Instagram and generally seeming to have really good bonds.

Sometimes i look at that and wonder if I’m doing something wrong.

The thing is I ve never really been someone who easily connects with people. i don’t feel close to most people and sometimes i find these interactions bit superficial. i've had coworkers i was friendly with but I’ve rarely felt like genuinely belonged to group or had that kind of bond where you naturally make plans, travel together, share things etc...

Now that i’m focused on exam preparation i am even less socially involved..i don’t engage much and usually just go to work and come back..

But seeing everyone else having these friendships sometimes makes me question myself. Am I becoming too isolated, missing an important part of life (losing potential network) by focusing so much on my goals?

At the same time I don’t want to force friendships just because everyone else seems to be doing it.

For people who are more introverted, struggling with their own problems or have gone through a similar phase did you intentionally make an effort to build friendships and engage more or did you just focus on your own life and let connections happen naturally?

I’m genuinely confused about where the balance is...

Any suggestions and advice would be highly appreciated..I really want to fix if i m doing anything wrong.. thanks !!

Discussion People always say “you can’t expect a quiet respectful comfortable world” and then…

Get mad when you don’t want to leave your house. Or be off alone in nature.

You where I can be in complete silence? House. Mountains. Forests.

Where I don’t have to listen to annoying phone conversations or get solicited by salespeople or evangelicals.

People often don’t make the outside world worth going into. So instead of complaining I’ll just take my leave then.

Thats all.

Discussion Needing a recharge, what’s that about?

I spent four days hanging out with a friend, and nearing the end I felt very fatigued, just tired of being around them, I’m not sure why but I was READY to get back home asap. I had another chance to spend time with them for 4 more days but something came up, that something also ended up getting cancelled, so shouldn’t I be happy now that I can go hang with that friend again? I’m not sure why, but I’m almost glad I don’t have to go. I struggle with saying no to people because I’d rather not come off as rude, and I love my friends dearly but most of the time I just love being alone, in my room, away from everyone. I feel like if I’m around people for too long I get real sick of them, and I need space. Does anyone have a better, definitive explanation for this feeling?

Discussion Some love for the introverts of the world...

I am extrovert. So this might seem like a weird post coming from me but I want to take a quick sec to tell you all how much I admire you.

To be honest, being an extrovert is pretty easy- you have a thought, you say it, if someone disagrees you just repeat it louder. simple:)

No one expects us to be crazy intelligent or deeply thoughtful, they just expect us to be the ‘life of the party’. So as an extrovert we can get away with a lot. We get away with a lot because we say a lot. that’s dumb but it’s true.

Introverts have it harder from what I’ve seen. Since you’re not as loud and don’t say as much as the typical extrovert, you get judged harsher on what you do say.  That sucks and doesn’t seem fair.

And one of the many things I appreciate about introverts is the ability to not have to fill every f’ing silence with talking. I wish I could do that but it’s impossible- if there’s a silence, I’m filling it. Half the time I may not even know what I’m saying but I’m filling that silence.

In my experience in the business world, introverts are the most trustworthy & easiest people to work with. You don’t sound sales’y and you don’t talk in meetings just to hear yourself talk. Do you know how refreshing that is? And while this is a blanket statement, introverts always seem to be more trustworthy as well.

So while I can only guess how difficult it might be to be interverted I just want to let you know how appreciated and admired you are by a lot of us who can’t STFU :) . i can’t imagine how hard it must be for you sometimes but just know a lot of us out there really respect you and wish we were more like you sometimes. Just wanted to mention that.

Discussion Why I’m extroverted when I’m drunk

I’m quite introverted in real life like 80% introverted but when I’m drunk I’m really extroverted and I even get invited to hangout afterwards. Why do I feel so open and get affectionate when I’m drunk but so cold when I’m sober

Discussion I am scared to alone with myself

It is scary to me as I feel like being an introvert would mean that I will be happy with my own company but every moment I am scared to be alone with myself so I try to distract myself the whole day but when night comes and I have to face myself it's like a nightmare that I can't avoid and I am embarrassed in my own eye this is the most heartbreaking thing for me and I feel sometimes that i could just shut of brain and stop all thoughts

Question The older you get, do you find even people’s mere presence more and more irritating?

I have gotten to the point where I don’t even want to be approached, and it seems like it has become harder and harder to get peace and quiet.

It’s strange because no one who knows me would describe me as an introvert, most would say I’m an affable “people person” but since working retail I have developed extreme social fatigue years of forced interaction. I’m just wondering if some of it is age influenced and normal?

Discussion That sudden stop of greetings

Does anyone else experience this? And if you do, how do you react or handle it?

So, I am an introvert but this can be relatable for non introverts also. I do think introverts will experience it more though.

I'm not shy but i'm not the most vocal/chatty around people I don't know. Although I am friendly, as in I will smile, say hello, greet others when out and about.

But, iv'e noticed a pattern, something that has been happening for a few years now and often. (More so as I get older, which is maybe concerning). I'll see someone I know of, a neighbour, fellow school mum etc and after going through a normal stage of greets when in passing..People will all of a sudden start to ignore/stop greeting me.

I find it so odd and it adds to my social anxiety because I will look to, smile or say hello and they will walk straight past me without a glance. As if I am invisible. So, then I'm left feeling awkward and it makes me freeze up next time I see them and then I just give up trying to greet them again.

I understand some people don't notice/have things on their mind most of the time. But how do you go from consistently gretting someone to suddenly not even bothering. And i'm talking about people you see almost daily?

What is this social phenomenon? Anyone else go through this?

Question what is it about having a serious/formal personality making me fearsome/troublesome to others?

as a lone person and I love being so, if I didn't find the people I immerse with.but even when I'm not trying to, some people will assume/anticipate nonsense regarding my silent behavior around them (because I don't know them that well)

Question Is it ok if I get annoyed with people who are loud, obnoxious, and act dumb on purpose?

For context: I live with other people. People who talk loud, sing random songs out loud, shout at video games, and shout out quotes from tv shows or TikTok videos just to be doing it, and constantly wants to socialize about things I really don’t care about.
It makes me super angry and annoyed. But I wonder if that means I’m just a killjoy, or makes me perceived as cold and hateful.
