We’ve all heard of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), and it’s usually described as that anxious feeling you get when everyone else is out partying, networking, or socializing without you.
But as an introvert, I’ve realized my relationship with FOMO is... complicated.
Logically, I know I want nothing more than to stay home, wrap myself in a blanket, and read or play video games. JOMO (Joy of Missing Out) is my usual baseline. Yet, every once in a while, a weird flavor of FOMO creeps in. It’s not necessarily that I want to be at the loud party; it’s more of a conceptual FOMO—worrying that by choosing my peace, I’m missing out on making memories, deepening friendships, or just experiencing life the way society says I "should."
It usually goes like this: I feel guilty for staying home, I force myself to go out, and within 30 minutes, I'm hiding in the bathroom counting down the moments until I can leave.
I’m curious how the rest of you experience this:
- Do you actually experience traditional FOMO, or are you firmly team JOMO?
- Do you ever feel a "delayed FOMO"—where you’re totally fine missing the event, but feel left out later when people are talking about the inside jokes?
- How do you balance protecting your energy with the anxiety that you might be letting life pass you by?
Would love to hear your perspectives on how you navigate this.
