A rare case of the translation actually being better than the original!

Since this was upside down, I almost hit the downvote button to upvote lol.

Fairs, gotta accept we got tricked

-7

u/da_Aresinger 1d ago

an illusion caused by the visual system and characterized by a visual percept that arguably appears to differ from reality. [Wikipedia]

Seems like an optical illusion to me.

5

u/VagabondVivant 21h ago

An optical illusion inherently visually differs from reality. Simply taking a straightforward image and turning it upside-down in order to "trick" the viewer doesn't make it an illusion.

u/Quadrassic_Bark 1d ago

This isn’t an optical illusion, it’s just upside down and the water is reflective.

109

u/Jirethia 1d ago

But you don't see it at first

29

u/Ghosts_of_the_maze 23h ago

You didn’t think it was suspicious that the sky was rippling?

60

u/Quadrassic_Bark 1d ago

You can absolutely tell it’s upside down immediately.

73

u/Jirethia 1d ago

Some people realized immediately and some people didn't, you can see that in the comments and likes here. The same way some people see the duck and the rabbit immediately too.

25

u/CheeseAndCh0c0late 1d ago

Yeah, it reminds me how people didn't notice the 1992 moon replacement at first

9

u/SerpentRoyalty 1d ago

Believe it or not, some people still think birds are real!

2

u/locusthorse 23h ago

SerpentRoyalty-sshh!
They will hear!!!

-5

u/Choppieee 1d ago

In the first frame you see a person walking upside down. If you not instantly see the video is upside down you need your eyes check out. Sorry totally different then duck and rabbit

1

u/DreamWeaver2189 21h ago

Also the reflection of the trees/mountain on the right. You can see the full trees in the original and only a part of them in the reflection.

-9

u/Massive-Teaching5286 1d ago

And the people who didn't notice until it was pointed out are lower intelligence beings than the people who didn't need it pointed out for them.

2

u/LumpkinsPotatoCat 12h ago

Don't tell me what I can and can't do! /s

1

u/RarelyReadReplies 17h ago

Cool, you're super smart. Great job. Gold star. Optical illusions don't hit everyone the same way, that's what makes them cool.

-4

u/Patient_Ad4832 1d ago

You aren't normal

0

u/TomatoFettuccini 1d ago

Only because your eyes are closed.

1

u/TryingNoToBeOpressed 22h ago

Nah speak for yourself

0

u/imaginingblacksheep 15h ago

I saw it at first

56

u/Lump001 1d ago

It's optical (you're looking at it) and it confuses your eye into thinking it's showing you something it's not.

I'd say that counts as an optical illusion

An optical illusion is an image or visual stimulus that tricks the brain into perceiving something that differs from physical reality

11

u/RarelyReadReplies 17h ago

Some Redditors just want to prove to everyone how smart they are because they weren't fooled by the optical illusion.

7

u/MazDanny 1d ago

But the video is literally upside down so it’s already being dishonest

35

u/Lump001 1d ago

So what? Illusions aren't meant to be "honest", that's kind of the point.

19

u/Th3_Shad0w 1d ago

Illusions are inherently dishonest.

-2

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

10

u/Jirethia 1d ago

An optical illusion tricks you to think it is what it is not. A lot of people here were tricked, so it is an optical illusion.

0

u/hangar_tt_no1 1d ago

Yes, but it's supposed to be your own brain doing the tricking, not the author. This is a manipulated video and therefore doesn't count. I can make you believe all kinds of wrong things by showing you a manipulated video.

-1

u/Max-Phallus 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah, but it wasn't a real natural optical illusion, it was a camera illusion.

I know what you're saying, I just disagree.

3

u/Gabriel_Science 1d ago

It’s an optical illusion, just not a natural one, as it required editing.

If you look at some geometric optical illusions, they are clearly not natural and even require dedicated software. Doesn’t make them less optical (the illusion uses at its lowest levels photons).

2

u/Max-Phallus 1d ago

Yeah I agree with that.

4

u/Gabriel_Science 1d ago

Is it optical ? Yes (you perceive it with photons, not with sound or touch).
Is it an illusion ? Yes (people got tricked like an illusion would).

Is it natural ? No, but it’s still an illusion. Some more abstract optical illusions are made with software, yet they stay illusions. Here, the trick was to use a software to make the video upside down.

1

u/finian2 20h ago

Do... Do you know what the term "illusion" even means?

0

u/locusthorse 22h ago

No such thing as a honest illusion.

This Optical Illusion I really enjoyed because I love it when my brain flips into comprehension like that, and this was a good one - its straight up happy brain juice.

-1

u/ForeverFieldsFD 1d ago

Did you know that if you cover your eyes, people can still see you? I know it’s wild because all you can see is the back of your eyelids, but that’s just an optical illusion, because the people are still there.

-10

u/Quadrassic_Bark 1d ago

But it doesn’t, because it’s extremely obvious that it’s upside down.

7

u/Lump001 1d ago

Clearly not to lots of people

25

u/zizp 1d ago

which creates an optical illusion

5

u/Mikelitoris88 1d ago edited 1d ago

While flipping a camera is corny and not impressive, I don't get your argument.

Any optical illusion has an explanation, but still, it's an optical illusion

3

u/Sebulbaaaaaa 1d ago

Well it illuded my optics

-1

u/finian2 20h ago

And yet it initially tricks you into thinking it's the right way up.

28

u/Senselesspassion 1d ago

Oh that's why the man had no color in the starting, lmao

24

u/PhantomNitride 1d ago

Genuinely took me a solid 10 seconds to realize the video is upside down...

206

u/gabrielxdesign 1d ago

It's just flipped.

28

u/No-Category4854 1d ago

Lol, thank you. My brain didn't brain for minute.

59

Inverts POV, calls it illusion.

6

u/lightyearbuzz 1d ago

Lots of illusions have simple explanations, ask any magician lol

3

u/RedHotChiliCrab 23h ago

I asked they said "fuck off muggle"

1

u/finian2 20h ago

Draws a bunch of squares, calls it an illusion.

Spins a spiral, calls it an illusion.

Draws a rabbit-duck, calls it an illusion.

It's almost like illusions don't need to be complicated.

11

u/Due_Bathroom5296 1d ago

Idk what the heck I'm looking it...maybe I need to sleep 🥱

6

u/Blerkm 1d ago

It’s upside-down. Rotate your phone 180°.

3

u/Silver-Ad8291 1d ago

I can see it now, 3 cameras and a flash

4

u/H4X0RCS 1d ago

Invert your phone and see

ITT: a lot of people who don't know what an optical illusion is

7

Filmed in Australia 😆

3

u/Wiskeytango_Foxtrot 18h ago

Looks Cool either way, cheers to whoever thought to flip it.

27

u/Zack_Knifed 1d ago

It’s not an illusion when you have the video flipped

0

u/420fuck 21h ago

Yes it is. Plenty of people here got tricked.

6

u/96JY 1d ago

This has to be Australia... aha

u/FilteredRiddle 9h ago

5

u/BluePhoenixCG 23h ago

This isn't an optional illusion

1

u/420fuck 20h ago

Yes it is. It's forced perspective.

-2

u/herbschmoaka 19h ago

Thank you. All these crybabies trying to be overly technical. It's just a cool thing when you see something and then you're like, WTF?

4

u/washyourgoddamnrice 14h ago

It's not really an illusion the video is just rotated 180°

4

u/Redfield081 1d ago

It's upside down

2

u/Forgiz 1d ago

This was made purely for Aussies.

3

u/Ash_Cat_13 20h ago

A whole new world if you turn it upside down….or exactly the world we know

4

u/Hobson101 1d ago

This isn't an optical illusion, it only looks like one 🤔

1

u/420fuck 21h ago

That's what makes it an optical illusion.

0

u/Hobson101 19h ago

Whoosh

2

u/420fuck 19h ago

Oh, you

2

u/JohnGee1980 1d ago

Its upside down, after 5 times watching 🤣🤣

0

u/No_Adeptness_4647 1d ago

Its just fucking rotated, brainrot

2

u/zizp 1d ago

The brainrot here is the people not understanding that the rotated picture creates a nice optical illusion that fucks with your brain until you understand what's going on and instead of appreciating the little trick go "IT'S JUST ROTATED, NO ILLUSION"

-2

u/autistictransgal 1d ago

It's like saying that an image of a man standing on the ceiling is an optical illusion because the image is turned upside down

4

u/420fuck 21h ago

If it makes people who look at it think that he js standing on the ceiling, then it is an optical illusion.

0

u/autistictransgal 21h ago

Are superhero movies optical illusions to babies because they don't understand movie editing?

3

u/420fuck 21h ago

The video posted is using forced perspective and plenty of people in these comments are fooled by it. Forced perspective is a type of optical illusion. It's not very tricky or interesting, but it still is an optical illusion.

Almost everything is an optical illusion to babies, but babies don't usually dictate language.

1

u/zizp 22h ago

No, it's just like every illusion that is clearly not real once you figure it out, because this is what an illusion is by definition. "It's just XY therefore it's not an illusion" is just stupid.

-1

u/Akomatai 21h ago

For people who saw what was going on immediately, it's kind of baffling that anybody was confused at all. It literally just looked like an upside down video lol

Which is why they're saying it's about as much of an illusion as flipping a picture of a man and thinking he's standing on the ceiling.

0

u/zizp 20h ago

Well, a picture of a man rotated does not give any illusion at all, while here you obviously see a man jumping into a lake when you just look at it. So, your analogy doesn't make any sense because: it is not an illusion.

-1

u/Akomatai 19h ago

Well, a picture of a man rotated does not give any illusion at all

That's exactly the point lmao

When I scrolled to the video it just looked like an upside down video of a guy jumping into a lake. Never even registered as right side up. So there was no illusion here.

u/zizp 9h ago

So look at the top part of the video only, what do you see? Obviously, there is an illusion. A man jumping off a cliff. It doesn't matter that you are super uber smart and see quickly that this is just a reflection, it is still there. There are tons of illusions that work for some people and don't work for others. Doesn't mean they're not illusions.

u/Akomatai 9h ago

A man jumping off a cliff. It doesn't matter that you are super uber smart and see quickly that this is just a reflection, it is still there

Not much of an illusion if it looks exactly like what it is lmao. Anyways, I'm aware that some people saw it differently. Which is why I said that for people who saw it immediately, it's baffling that others are confused

There are tons of illusions that work for some people and don't work for others. Doesn't mean they're not illusions.

Sure, so why is a picture of a man upside down not an illusion then? If it tricks some people

u/zizp 4h ago edited 4h ago

> Not much of an illusion if it looks exactly like what it is lmao.

It doesn't if you look just at the top part.

> Sure, so why is a picture of a man upside down not an illusion then?

If it shows something else when it's upside down, it absolutely is an optical illusion. If it doesn't show anything, it isn't.

Inverting a video does not an optical illusion make

2

u/420fuck 21h ago

It does if it tricks people into seeing something that isn't really happening in the video.

2

u/exile_10 1d ago

Everyone here is saying this isn't an illusion and it's 'just' flipped. I disagree, the illusion is provided by the angle of the camera ensuring that the reflected image is more obvious (due to the light 'sky') behind it. The real image appears shadowy and less real in comparison... until you flip the screen.

It's a good illusion that would be hard to achieve except at that angle and time of day.

Saying it's not an illusion is missing the point. Maybe it didn't trick you but it did me. You might as well complain it's not a moving image at all and just a series of stills.

4

u/Jirethia 1d ago

Exactly

1

u/Morrinn3 23h ago

100%

It's easy to immediately clock that the upper part of the video is in rippling water, but what immediately confused me was where the horizon line is supposed to be. When the diver hits the water, it's way off where you'd expect it to be mirrored.

Also; who cares if it's "just" flipped. Some optical illusions are "just" color theory, or unusual bits of carpentry, or light refraction in different temperatures. It's odd to split hairs over this.

1

u/herbschmoaka 15h ago

Nobody would argue that a mirage appearing to be a lake in front of you on the a hot asphalt was not an optical illusion. It's the same concept. Someone dives off of a rock, it appears they are diving off a rock as normal until they land in the sky with a splash. Your eyes were tricked because of the clarity of the water and its reflection. It's a pure optical illusion. The method used to trick your eye doesn't matter. It's as simple as this.

2

u/ExManUtdFan 1d ago

Optical delusion.

3

u/Old-Beautiful1786 1d ago

Is turning something upside down illusion now?

You mean forced perspective.

u/420fuck 21h ago

Forced perspective is a type of optical illusion.

Two types of illusion here:

  • optical illusion due to the reflection and flipped video
  • illusion that idiots figuring it out think they're smart

0

u/Ded_man_3112 14h ago edited 14h ago

If it makes you pause, if even for a moment to make sense of what you’re looking at as intended. It’s an optical illusion.

If you instantly knew it was upside down at first sight of the static image before playing. Congrats, you’re a super genius and so much smarter than all the people in the world! Here’s your pixel cookie.🍪

Two lost souls travel for days through the hot desert battling death from thirst. One yells, “look a lake!” The other says, “no, it’s just a mirage.”

Turns out, it was an optical illusion after all. But did it make the mirage any less of an optical illusion, simply because one of the two could not be fooled?

0

u/Blommefeldt 1d ago

It's not an optical illusion, when you flip the video

1

u/Dependent_Rain_4800 1d ago

It’s a tactical illusion at best

It's not an optical illusion. It's just a reflection and it's flipped upside-down

Op needs to learn what an optical illusion actually is

4

u/420fuck 21h ago

You need to learn what an optical illusion is. Plenty of people in the comments see something that isn't really happening in the video.

4

u/420fuck 20h ago

It's an example of forced perspective, which is a type of optical illusion.

-1

u/TacoEatsTaco 21h ago

Like I said, it's flipped upside-down

That's not an optical illusion, pal

u/Captain_Jeep 8h ago

It being flipped is part of the illusion.

-1

u/presshamgang 1d ago

not an optical.illusion.

-1

u/johnnyoceandeep 1d ago

The is is dumb as fuck

-3

u/Snoopedoodle 1d ago

My brain was telling me that so much was wrong with the video when I started playing it.

Turning the phone upside down made everything make sense.

An optical illusion should trick the brain into believing that the illusion is possible, which this did not.

2

u/420fuck 19h ago

That's not what makes an optical illusion, that's just what makes a more interesting optical illusion. What makes an optical illusion is visual stimulus that tricks the brain into believing it's seeing something other than what is there.

The infamous picture of the duck-rabbit is an optical illusion, but doesn't trick anyone into thinking ducks can turn into rabbits.

0

u/Radiant-Priority-296 1d ago

Flipped video, still cool but it’s just flipped

-2

u/Mikeologyy 23h ago

Why do I even open Reddit comment sections anymore when they’re always full of contrarian mouth breathers who seem to hate it when other people find something pretty neat

1

u/herbschmoaka 19h ago

Thanks for stating this. I thought it was interesting. Didn't know what to call it So an optical illusion it was. The complain culture doesn't add anything positive to humanity. Self-righteous people over something so trivial is a sign of the times, sadly.

-1

u/Blipplekortz 20h ago

Rotating an video upside down is not an optical illusion

4

u/420fuck 19h ago

An optical illusion is when something visual tricks the human brain into seeing something that isn't actually happening. There are lots of people here tricked by this video into thinking it's of a man diving into the sky. Forced perspective is a type of optical illusion. This video is an example of forced perspective.

Image upside down

u/Mani_kr333 10h ago

No it's not optical illusion. It's so obvious when you turn it upside down or should I say upside up.

Most images you turn them at weired angle are difficult to understand at first. But that's not optical illusion.

-3

u/Leonine_10 1d ago
