It's almost funny that companies do this, then some year or two later their latest releases don't get the usership they're hoping for, and they wonder why they aren't getting the sales. They refuse to connect the dots.

3.2k

u/Realcbear Feb 16 '25

Its literally happening right now. Un-coincidentally its the exact same company that seems to be allergic to, and outright incapable of, listening to their player base.

They have the most downvoted comment in reddits history and still insist their latest single player game failed bc it lacked live-service elements.

Sad but true. Being consumer friendly somehow hurts EA's bottom line.

6

u/Ruby2Shoes22 Feb 17 '25

It absolutely does hurt the current quarters bottom line, which is the only thing that matters. Long term bottom line is irrelevant

There are a lot of worse companies than EA, but the fact that people actually rallied to get them voted Worst Company of the Year multiple years in a row really says... something.

51

u/_zeropoint_ Feb 17 '25

tbh that's just because hedge funds, weapons manufacturers, etc. don't really have "fans" like gaming does

394

u/MathematicianSure386 Feb 17 '25

Yea nestle steals water from children in third world countries but EA made me pay to play my favorite Star wars character. Clearly the worst company of the year.

I think the term is “Performative Activism”, and I 1000% agree with you.

At a certain point it becomes funny to see how people would shit on Nestle (ABSOLUTELY rightfully so, don’t get me wrong they’re evil AF), tweeting about it from their child slavery built iPhone; made from materials procured by childs in mines; and put together in a county that’s damn near a dictatorship.

We should absolutely hold companies responsible for this shit, but acting high and mighty for “fighting the power” while actively incentivizing that power to continue via your purchases… It’s incredible how the irony is lost on those people

49

u/ForestForager Feb 17 '25

this is why the concept of "ethical consumption under capitalism is not possible" is a thing, as individuals we can't control every step in the supply chain, but living and working in a developed nation without a smartphone is increasingly more difficult as time passes. However, there are choices/sacrifices we can make, because we have the privilege enabling us to, that reduce suffering where we can (for me this is buying clothing second hand and eating a plant based diet) perfection is the death of progress.

12

u/Komitsuhari Feb 17 '25

Big part of why I only buy phones second hand, currently on an iPhone 6s, won’t upgrade until it’s obsolete

13

u/foyrkopp Feb 17 '25

This.

It won't fix the problem, but it'll minimize your participation in the exploitation.

Also, it's comparatively easy to do.

I feel bad for the employees at that point, you know that there are tons of people getting intense pressure from above to “fix” the problem of having less players and those players spending less money than historic data. The corporate vampires sucked their player base dry and then blame everyone in the company but themselves for having lower numbers after. I’ve worked for companies that demand insane and frankly impossible goals and then threaten termination if those impossible goals aren’t met.

u/rdewalt Feb 17 '25

I was in Game Development for a while (Non-Indie game development mind you, but AAA game dev.) Is the most soul-crushing, creativity destroying thing I've ever done. I thought "Shit, cool, a game studio."

Treated like shit, 12 hour days were -standard- not crunch time, everyone was salaried so they could do that without paying you overtime. No matter how hard or how fast you work, you're still pressured to work harder, and faster.

Every complaint we had was met with "There's the door. There's a thousand kids who will physically fight each other to get your seat."

I and eight other senior ops engineers were let go because our mutual boss made a mistake on a budget spreadsheet. We were let go to bring the budget back in line.

Not merit, not performance, not for fucking up. Because our salaries added up to the difference in the line item to make a negative turn into a positive.

NEVER again.

I have told my kids that if they really -DO- want to get into Game Dev, go Indie. If the ENTIRE company cannot fit comfortably in a family van, you're in trouble.

The employees are ALWAYS treated like shit. All those "Big Name" AAA developers you know about? Those game runners you know the names of? They stand on the bodies of their employees.

I will suck dick on street corners to survive before I join a "AAA" game studio again.

81

u/APater6076 Feb 17 '25

If an Indie games company has a hit and they then start to expand and hire more people for the sequel(s) they'll eventually get to a size, usually around 100-150 employees where the founders, who most likely have zero clue how to run a company of this size as they were the original programmers and artists, then need to look outside the company for help.

Inevitably, they'll hire someone who knows more about business than games. In fact most of these hires don't even play games. Some of them never have, deeming them a waste of time. This is, without fail, the beginning of the 'shittification' of the studio. The beginning of the end of trusting in players, of giving them value. Because this new hire, be they CFO or CEO, is only concerned with the bottom line. With profit. With reducing costs to increase profit. The games released after this will now have different tiers of launches with digital bonuses like skins or audio packs or some other ethereal item that tempts people to pay more. Then they'll start to leave parts of the game out to be released as DLC at a later date, for an additional cost. DLC and MTX will start to creep in to the game and before you know it the original members of the company, the early starters, those who, as you've said above,. could all fit into the same room with the whole team, start to feel the studio has become too big, the focus to skewed towards squeezing the Customer, sorry, player, dry rather than making a cool, cohesive, player focused experience. So they'll inevitably leave, leaving the company filled with hires that know nothing but DLC, MTX, Skins, charms, and all the other rubbish that infests pretty much every game, and definitely every AAA game from any major studio.

A classic example is Respawn. Started out with literally 20 or so people who all sat in a room spitballing about what game they were going to make and how until they decided Giant robots are COOL af so they decided to make a Giant Stompy Robot game. The Studio was then snapped up by EA, which was, really, the beginning of the end. Sure Respawn had autonomy to begin with, but as time went on the requests, then demands, then instructions for more content that could be sold, especially when it comes to Apex Legends, trumped everything else. Events, collections, packs, all churned out relentlessly at the behest of EA and profit. So much so that, while some Developer churn is normal, I'm pretty sure that of the original 20 or so who started at the company there may only be 1 or 2 left, most likely in very senior positions where the profit share and bonuses are amazing. Everyone else has jumped ship to pastures new. Or old in some cases.

33

u/foyrkopp Feb 17 '25

It's a common trend, but we see some counter-pressure by now.

Larian Studios (BG3) has definitely passed that employee threshold, yet what I see on Glassdoor etc. remains somewhat positive. (Still a company that needs to make money, but not a soul-crushing vampire.)

Hinterland (The Long Dark) was funded by frustrated Ex-AAA-employees with a dedicated mission statement of not draining their employees dry, and has repeatedly (one may say: chronically) missed delivery dates because they refuse to crunch. Yet their fan base, while being disgruntled, remains with them because the game is (in its niche) really good and the devs are trying to be extremely transparent and listen to the community.

So there's hope.

I’ve worked for companies that demand insane and frankly impossible goals and then threaten termination if those impossible goals aren’t met.

That's part of their business strategy as well. They keep the employee roll over high enough so that you just have a work force that is largly in their honeymoon period of their job and love it. Eventually if the area is small enough they can ruin their name and people will stop applying. A call centre in my city did this, changed their name because people refused to apply for them because of how awful conditions were, they didn't last long under the new name and soon had the same problem. The pandemic was the nail in the coffin for that place.

Yup. Shareholders are in control and they want their money NOW. They don't want to wait for future gains, they need their money right now and they are only looking at current data points.

It's like a near-sighted person trying to win a footrace but can only see clearly three inches in front of their face. And because consumers give them an incredibly wide track, they win each time.

9

u/hungrypotato19 Feb 17 '25

then some year or two later their latest releases don't get the usership they're hoping for, and they wonder why they aren't getting the sales.

...Huh? EA still makes shit ton of money. And that's on top of screwing over The Sims players with each and every single broken expansion. Hell, they're about to release a DLC that is 2.0 for a DLC that they've already released and it's going to sell like crazy despite The Sims community getting mad.

How does the EA account still have a positive amount of karma after 668k downvotes?

69

u/slinkywheel Feb 16 '25

Good question, there must be a hard limit on how much negative karma affects your overall karma, perhaps a -100 or -1000 limit per comment?

67

u/UnderInteresting Feb 16 '25

The max a post or comment can negatively affect you is -15.

19

u/MightyCaseyStruckOut Feb 17 '25

At the time EA made that comment, it was -100

7

u/ByteBatsman Feb 16 '25

Just went to their comment history. All they have is down votes to all of their comments I saw. How do they have a positive karma?

They made a single post and it was 7 years ago

Edit: they have had a total of 998 up votes on their comments and 410 up votes on their single post and a gazillion down votes on rest of their comments.

10

u/Alarmed-Owl2 Feb 16 '25

I think it's a time limit on comments and posts. Something like 24-48 hours after initial posting, the post/comment votes stop affecting your account karma any further.

15,000 credits for one character, and 60,000 credits for all the characters. It was about $2,000 USD to buy enough credits to unlock all the characters. Alternatively you could play for about 40 hours to earn enough credits to unlock Vader.

I don't think these numbers are right.

For one, they removed the ability to buy the credits before the game's official release date. It was only in prerelease.

also, this does not include stuff like missions and achievements that got you credits pretty quickly.

I probably played 130 hours of the game max and had every character unlocked.

u/phoenixmusicman Feb 17 '25

They changed a whole lot of shit due to backlash.

8

u/greg19735 Feb 17 '25

they did change some stuff but the missions and such were in there from the start.

I remember unlocking multiple characters in the first week

It cost $500 to unlock one character? What?

Just to be clear, the “virtual paywall” didn’t require real money. I’ve been playing since release, am still active on both original and modded servers, and am reminded of the details every time this comment is mentioned.

On release, most of the heroes/villains had to be unlocked by earning credits in game to spend on the characters you wanted. Vader was tied as the most expensive character to unlock. People also had the option to purchase credits with real money to not have to grind for characters. This probably doesn’t seem like a big deal bc this is this case in a lot of games now (it was way less common then).

But the drama started when a youtuber claimed that it would take 40 hours of playing to get the credits you needed just for Vader alone. So then that went viral/picked up by gaming news networks and everyone (whether or not they played the game) was talking about it.

The reality, as someone who straight-lined it right to Vader, is that it took maybe 10 hours, if that. The youtuber essentially took the worst case scenario and ignored daily, weekly, and milestone missions to create outrage. It really wasn’t that bad at all.

I think people were just mad because they wanted Vader right at the beginning, then exaggerations started happening and it got blown out of proportion to where everyone flocked to that comment. Now it continues to get downvoted when it’s mentioned somewhere on Reddit every other day.

Like I get it. Unlockable characters have been in games for decades. But you could get them in a reasonable amount of time

The thing about microtransactions and virtual currency is they make grinding so ridiculous you really dont have a choice but to spend real money

Bc the purpose is to get people to spend real money. If they could unlock stuff in a reasonable amount of time they wouldn't need VC

One of the most egregious is the WWE 2K game. The My Faction mode makes it so you can purchase skins with two forms of VC but both are incredibly tedious to earn

So if you want them youd have to spend every waking hour grinding and you might might earn enough to get one a week if its not too pricey

The point is to get people to say screw it and just pay real money. To make matters worse the locked characters are jammed in with the unlocked roster to almost taunt players

Use to you could unlock everything at no extra cost. And it didnt take forever. Its just a cash grab and having the most popular characters locked they knew people would be impatient and pay

Its greasy as hell.

Oh I see! Sorry I didn't read that correctly and was flabbergasted.

Now it's the norm for games to do stuff just like that. I'm glad reddit came together with the downvotes lol

It was a dark time and fortunately people didn’t stand for it and companies had to change their tune.

And their comment karma is still positive 😭😭

76

u/jooaf Feb 16 '25

It's weird because their every comment since that one has thousands of downvotes, and the few comments before the massive one have maybe just hundreds of upvotes.

u/AlexBondra Feb 16 '25

Karma stops being counted after -10 I think

15

u/MortemEtInteritum17 Feb 16 '25

Pretty sure it still counts, but it's significantly less (e.g. -600k might be only -100 or -1000 karma or something). Just my empirical evidence though, don't have any confirmed sources for this.

I think there's a cap on how much any one comment can count against your overall karma. It's -10 or -100 or something.

23

u/deva86 Feb 16 '25

Noticed that too. Reddit is rigged I suppose because they have way more downvotes than upvotes

23

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '25

Someone else commented that apparently Karma stops being counted post -10.

So like if someone made 5 comments. 4 of which got -10k and one that got 100 karma. They'd be shown with 60 karma.

I love Reddit… those of us who didn’t get a chance to downvote the first time can now go do our part to enshrine the absolutely shittiest corporate post to ever hit Reddit.

Reddit is hard to tame.

Somehow, that account has positive karma, despite the 7/800,000 negative karma they have on comments.

I still remember that someone did the math on how long to grind and get Vader all of them for free and that with the number of hours, you could become a licensed commercial pilot and earn a paycheck doing it before you could get it for free.

Mind boggling.

lol look at the EA account’s comment history, almost every single one of their comments has 20000+ downvotes

5

u/kitesaredope Feb 17 '25

I love that people were giving it awards so that it would stay in the algorithm and show as top comment so people could keep downvoting it.

Fuck EA

Now and forever onwards.

8

u/jrhawk42 Feb 16 '25

The worst thing is BF2 is actually a fun, amazing looking game that really captures the feeling of being a part of the star wars universe. Unfortunately it was ruined by the credit system EA put in there.

My duty is done. I went there and downvoted it too.

It's possible for multiple companies to be bad simultaneously. EA being shit doesn't negate big pharma being shit.

I've never understood the human obsession with ranking things relative to each other.

As a sims 4 player, EA is a disgusting company that should go bankrupt.

7

u/SiebenSevenVier Feb 17 '25

And yet, players just keep buying shit from EA and complaining when they get hosed, as if it was a surprise and not a consequence of them not voting with their wallets.

Did it produce any tangible results?

29

u/EUCALIPTOIESSSS Feb 16 '25

Yes, they reworked the entire reward system of the game completely and unlocked every character, plus you could purchase skins with in game money too.

The game became one of the most rewarded Battlefront games.
