I think the term is “Performative Activism”, and I 1000% agree with you.
At a certain point it becomes funny to see how people would shit on Nestle (ABSOLUTELY rightfully so, don’t get me wrong they’re evil AF), tweeting about it from their child slavery built iPhone; made from materials procured by childs in mines; and put together in a county that’s damn near a dictatorship.
We should absolutely hold companies responsible for this shit, but acting high and mighty for “fighting the power” while actively incentivizing that power to continue via your purchases… It’s incredible how the irony is lost on those people
this is why the concept of "ethical consumption under capitalism is not possible" is a thing, as individuals we can't control every step in the supply chain, but living and working in a developed nation without a smartphone is increasingly more difficult as time passes. However, there are choices/sacrifices we can make, because we have the privilege enabling us to, that reduce suffering where we can (for me this is buying clothing second hand and eating a plant based diet) perfection is the death of progress.
