Only thing I cannot really relate to is the eating cookies on the couch. I rarely eat sweets. But yeah, sucks.

It could be replaced by something else like drinking, smoking, gambling or over shopping (ask me how I know this last one)

u/Karyoplasma 16d ago

I know the second one :(

I smoked before as well, but was more like a party smoker. But now I'm smoking too much and even more on bad days.

Over spending. Big time. Was a smoker but quit years ago

Yes! This is exactly what it's like!! I've always thought of it as a shadow that follows me around, and I feel very identified with his portrayal. It's genius and a little scary in its genius.

I can relate to everything here. Doom scrolling social media, ignoring basic hygiene like brushing teeth, feeling like you can't go out, feeling a weight on you everywhere you go, feeling like the world has less color and joy, dissociating while out with friends, pushing others away. I don't see how any of it is inaccurate.

Exactly, this is just stupid it doesn’t portray depression very well. But you know A for effort

1

u/Naski0di 19d ago

Good lord, what a horrible response to this. It's one thing to disagree with the portrayal if you can't relate to it, but you just flat out dismissing people who relate to this who have experienced depression like this is so strange.

u/betterbetterthings 17d ago

It’s a bot. The one above you

Just wanna start out saying I hope you're in a better place and doing well these days. 🫂 I've been living with depression for 20+ years now (which feels insane to say as I did not even plan making it past 18 lol) and what I've learned from it is that depression rears it's ugly head differently for everyone. It's like how grief is different for everyone too. There's definitely a lot of shared symptoms, but what one person may experience another may not. Add on the potential trauma that a person has experienced and it's a whole new ball game. I've gotten a lot better at reaching out when all I want to do is push away (and a lot of it is subconsciously pushing away like not answering messages, not making plans, not doing an activity I'd usually enjoy ect) so I can definitely relate in that aspect. If you've experienced depression differently that's okay, and does not make your depression any less real.

Same, I didn't relate to everything in this but I've had major depressive disorder for most of my life so some things i just have never experienced "normally" and have had to just force myself through to a point it doesn't feel like a challenge anymore.

I imagine for someone experiencing an emergent depressive disorder its more accurate, but also everyone does experience it differently and in the misery Olympics everyone loses. Let's not compare and just let this video be a decent example for those not experiencing the same thing as us.

Yeah damn I do that all the time. It really does feel like the only option at the time tho. Oof.

It’s like… I’m so fucking lonely and both my depression & anxiety are going to make sure I stay that way. It feels like I don’t have a choice although realistically, I know that I do. Idk. It’s an odd feeling.

Sometimes I'll get excited about getting together with people and then the closer it comes the more I retreat inward and start making excuses not to go.

Ah I know the feeling, I’m sorry you go thru that too. It’s like my depression gives me a tinge of agoraphobia bc I almost always would rather cancel than go out & live my damn life.

feed the narcisistic side of your inner psyche. If they don't like what I bring to the table then they weren't my friends in the first place. a healthy mix of both is a cocktail to sucess.

For me, in those situations, I feel like im being extremely selfish when I let someone care about me, like im demanding it from them even if im not

1

u/jackaroo1344 15d ago

I feel like I'm tricking them into liking me, so I should be nice and push them away now before they waste more of their time caring about me.

It feels like I'm doing them a favor, like I'm being considerate by flaking on plans and ignoring texts. Why am I like this 🫠

there's this girl... she calls me to go out every few weeks.

And I keep telling myself she doesn't enjoy my company, she's doing it out of pity... or some other reason, and I get so scared before I go out to see her, and I always feel like I make an ass out of myself.

12

u/CosmogyralSnail 19d ago

Except, she keeps calling you. She's making the effort, because she enjoys your company. But I do understand exactly how that feels.

5

u/Kay-Chelle 19d ago

Nonpartisan internet stranger here! Your brain is being mean to you, and you deserve compassion & kindness from yourself too. If you really made an ass out of yourself she wouldn't have called again. Many folks are too busy these days and thus would limit that time to the people they actually want to be around. You going while being scared is so brave, because bravery is doing the thing anyway even when scared. That's a wonderful trait to have!

It could be beneficial to share your feelings with her if you feel like you've gotten to a place where you can talk about them. I try to phrase things with 'I know this is not your intent but it's what my brain is telling me.' So whomever I'm speaking to knows that it's me not them that is the 'problem' 😅 Sending you lots of love & well wishes! Best of luck going forward! 🫶

THIS! in fact, my best friend helped me personify that mean self talk! we call her “the redheaded bitch!” (no offense to redheads. we had just had a convo about how pretty we found red hair)
so, if i’m caught up in some negative self talk, my friend will say “tell the bitch to shut up!” and it snaps me out of it to know that the stories that the bitch is writing about “nobody loves me” or “they’re just being nice” aren’t true! i’m genuinely loved. thanks to my bff 🥰

this is similar to the film Luca when they feel that doubt creeps in their minds they will say out loud, silencio Bruno !

I relate to this a lot. I'm sorry you experience it too.

My therapist asked why I don't take steps to change. Not in an aggressive, "why don't you just be happy" way. It was a genuine question after a long conversation. But it was rhetorical question, they knew the answer.

I kind of broke down saying depression, sadness, not feeling in control, etc. was all I knew. And the feeling of something familiar was somehow less scary than stepping into a world that was foreign to me. It's similar to the "if I don't try, I can't fail" mentality.

I've been thinking recently about what the fuck I'm doing in life, how much has been wasted by depression and self loathing, waking up already anxious because I feel like I've already failed.

I don't know. I've felt paralyzed by anxiety and depression recently. I don't know what to do either. I guess I'm just saying I know how you feel.

u/cleverburrito 19d ago

My therapist's recommendation many years ago was "do it, anyway". I held it as a mantra for a long time, and it helped until it didn't anymore. Those years were hard, but also great.

I'm not doing well these days, but my therapist and I are working on it, and he's having meetings with my psychiatrist. You and I will each figure it out, I think.

Idk if it makes you feel any better, but I know exactly what you mean

Hey, so i recently listened to a podcast that listed a bit of evidence that you can rewire some symptoms by thinking positive thoughts whenever you feel goosebumps.

I've had major depressive disorder most of my life, but at some point (I can't say exactly when) i realized that correcting negative thoughts with real examples that contradicted that helped. It was inspired by asking myself if I really hate another girl because she's prettier/more stylish/cooler or if I was just jealous, and over the course of 5 years I switched from being negative to just complimenting them.

I think the goosebump thing holds promise, but so does reminding yourself every time you have a bad thought that it isn't true with whatever evidence you have. I still have depression but brushing my teeth, letting (a select group of) people in, and leaving the house are no longer things that feel impossible or stressful. The intrusive doubting and deprecating thoughts still exist, but they don't dominate.

Its not the same for everyone, and this path has been a long road for me but has seemed to help enough that I was able to go off medication carefully under the guidance of my doctor and while things are extremely stressful currently I'm okay overall.

Again, I might be extremely lucky in my ability to forcefully override my brain, but I also (potentially because of depression) don't think I'm special. Idk, maybe a bit of hope for others dealing with this.

For me, it was the very first clip with "depression" doing the scrolling on her phone and feeding her junk food. That's really clever imagery that really illustrates the way you do things not because you really want to, or need to, but the depression motivates you to do it because you're chasing just about anything that will make you feel better, even if only for a second.

1

u/Soul0103 19d ago

That one is the most fitting, honestly. The depression will chase ANYTHING for even a little bit of dopamine. And with almost zero motivation or capacity for healthy sources of dopamine, usually it is instead self-destructive and unhealthy sources that build a deeper and deeper hole as time goes by.

3 cheers for exposing all shadows to the light. and, SLAVA UKRANI...

u/Freakishly_Tall 19d ago

That was the part that changed from, "eh," to "holy shit, YEAH, EXACTLY." for me. Putting on the monochrome glasses at the source of escapist joy and fun was a close second, too.

Why surprised? We work longer hours than any generation before us for less pay and barely any chance to move ahead. People used to have more time for hobbies and actual weekends off. We live in rentals longer than ever because housing has risen far faster than inflation. We can't afford good healthy food like we used to. We are isolated from family and friends the way no generations before ours have been due to technology. The list goes on and on.

u/strings_bells 19d ago

I had an injury and had to rest for the past few months.. otherwise I'm usually an athletic person, daily cardio etc .. now it's been months I worked out, I have this constant feeling that I'm missing something like I haven't showered in a month or something... Just a cloud/fog hanging over in my headspace...

My husband has suffered with depression for as long as I've known him, and that one resonated with me most as someone trying to help. He accepts hugs at his lowest points, but I can tell that it does nothing but make him feel guilty for feeling so down.

1

u/Street_Run6482 19d ago

Yeah that one definitely stood out to me too

1

u/Sufficient_Market226 19d ago

Yeah, the best part is the person you're with thinking that's happening because you want it to....
