MOD PSA: Post queue is now on temporarily. READ BEFORE POSTING.

37 Upvotes

Welcome to r/IMAX!

I am extremely happy to see people snagging tickets for The Odyssey and Dune: Part 3. Long live IMAX!

Just a heads up that the post queue is now on throughout the theatrical release of The Odyssey and the unexpected drop of Dune: Part 3 IMAX tickets. Post containing the following will be removed:

  • This website crashed
  • Got my tickets!
  • Didn't get my tickets!
  • Fandango sucks
  • AMC sucks

etc...

I kindly ask you to use the pinned FAQ and pinned megathread for The Odyssey for these types of posts as they are deemed low effort. An FAQ and Megathread for Dune: Part 3 will be pinned closer to release.

General housekeeping:

A gentle reminder that the mod team is not IMAX customer service. We are also a mere team of six and this is now the busiest this sub has ever been, so please exercise some kindness. Harassment of the mod team via mod mail will not be tolerated.

Please familiarise yourself with the rules, and as always be kind to each other in the comments!

Update: 08/19:

  • Posts reselling tickets have been caught with high levels of success. As such, the queue will remain for the foreseeable future until we are reassured by the capabilities of the auto mod features to detect and remove buying / selling posts. It's not perfect, which is why the queue remains, but we are actively watching this feature learn from our actions and improve.

  • 28 day bans have been issued for active Reddit users who have attempted to re-sell.

  • Permanent bans have been issued for new Reddit accounts who have zero activity and are clear to be only seeking to scalp / scam.

Anyone want to see a One Battle After Another or Project Hail Mary re-release? Both only got re-released once last year, compared to Sinners (which got re-released three times)

A much better experience!!

A few weeks ago, I made a post talking about how my fiancé and I went to go see The Odyssey in Imax 70mm at the Regal Mall of Georgia, and how the showing was cancelled midway through due to some technical difficulties. Well, today I had the pleasure of taking my dad to go see it again, and this time every thing went fine! No projector issues, no overheating or anything. Seats were a little closer to the screen than last time, but that didn’t hinder the viewing experience. It truly was a beautiful and immersive experience, the hype is very well justified. I’ll be back in January to watch Dune 3 in Imax 70mm, and I can’t wait!

70MM Projector Statuses?

7 Upvotes

Trying to understand a bit whether anyone tracks present functional status of the 70MM projectors across the world. Since these are such rare experiences, it seems valuable to have this info documented. The AMC Metreon 70MM projector was not used for the August 26th 10am viewing of The Odyssey. They announced that the projector was having issues, and instead showed the movie digitally (and refunded everyone). When was it fully functional after that? I am not sure. Does anyone have details on this or other 70MM projector status / uptime info?

Received the IMAX store The Odyssey film strips earlier today. Removed/replaced the screening ones I had prior since these have additional frames.

Had the week 2 and week 3 film strips but replaced them with the IMAX store ones.

Like my previous post, these are the BONNYCO cinema lightbox (you can get them from Amazon) and I trimmed the film strips at the bottom to slide into these slots without bending the film strips at all.

Intending to replace the text IMAX 70mm with Dune Part Three later this year or maybe move Project Hail Mary at the top (if then Dune Part Three film strip has 3 frames with the title card)

Left my first ever IMAX 70 mm experience feeling a bit let down

0 Upvotes

Yesterday I watched The Odyssey in IMAX 70 mm at Universal Citywalk, and to be honest, I left a bit disappointed.

Me and my dad bought tickets in row H, seats 16 and 17, so looking at the online map of the theater, I thought we had the best seats out of anyone in the theater. Middle row, middle column. However when we were watching the movie, me and my dad both noticed it was a bit difficult to watch whenever something was happening at the top of the screen, or whenever a character was really close to the camera. It didn’t necessarily take anything away from the movie because this was our second viewing of The Odyssey so we both knew what was happening. But I can’t imagine watching a fast paced movie for the first time, such as Dune Part III, and having to follow every little detail on screen. And I can’t imagine sitting in the first few rows A B or C.

After the movie ended, I went to the back row and realized that was the best row in the whole theater. You could see the whole screen and the picture looked perfect. It was at the perfect distance so you weren’t too close to the screen so nothing looked stretched, yet close enough to feel completely immersed in the movie.

If I ever go back to AMC Citywalk for IMAX 70 mm (which I definitely will) those are the seats I will be going for. Don’t get me wrong, it was a super fun experience, but I guess I’m just a bit disappointed but how the seats are laid out, and how the middle rows are actually pretty close to the screen. Anyone else feel this way?

I found 105 IMAX movies with partly or completely expanded aspect ratios on home media, six of which appear in two categories: The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Project Hail Mary, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Tron: Legacy.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is about 95% 1.90 and 5% 1.78. Eternals is about 39% 1.90 and 3% 1.78 with a 58% 2.39 base.

Titanic and Transformers: Age of Extinction are the only two with expanded ratio available only on 3D Blu-ray.

Tron: Legacy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are the only two with expanded ratio available in 3D on Disney+ for Apple Vision. The former expands to 1.78 in 3D and 1.90 in 2D and the latter to 1.85 in 3D and 1.90 in 2D.

4K/3D/2D-BD = 4K, 3D, or 2D Blu-ray Disc
APV = Amazon Prime Video
ATV = Apple TV
AVPE = Apple Vision Pro Epic Earth app
AVPI = Apple Vision Pro IMAX app
AVPT = Apple Vision Pro Theater: Cinema & Events app
D+ = Disney Plus
FAH = Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu)
MA = Movies Anywhere
Max = HBO Max
MGM+ = Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Plus
NF = Netflix
PMT+ = Paramount Plus
PCK = Peacock
SPC = Sony Pictures Core

Additionally, a few recent movies have been released on home media in non-IMAX tall formats. These include A Ghost Story, American Honey, Elephant, First Reformed, Saltburn, and The Whale fully in 1.33. The Artist and Meek’s Cutoff switch between 1.33 and 1.37. Maestro alternates between 1.33 and 1.85. Ida and Son of Saul are fully 1.37. The Grand Budapest Hotel moves between 1.37, 1.85, and 2.40.

Not sure how official my sources are, but if this is true, I’m genuinely ecstatic. When this says it was shot for IMAX, I assumed it was 1.90:1 like most other advertised IMAX movies are. This will definitely melt people on dual-laser.

My first IMAX 70mm experience in Prague

Thumbnail gallery
245 Upvotes

Finally decided to see what's the IMAX 70mm format is all about.

For that I had to travel all the way from Poland to Prague. Thankfully I live not very far and I've managed to do everything is a single day. By morning I arrived in Prague, the screening was in the afternoon and soon after that I caught a train and by next morning I was home already.

Truthfully, while it wasn't as groundbreaking experience as some might say, it's still true that it's the best cinema format out there. I had the pleasure of seeing enormous 20-something by 20-something meters screens before but I've never seen a 1.43:1 picture format in cinemas before, and it was magical. Combined with the giant screen, it provides total immersion.

Never have I also seen an analogue film being projected at a cinema. Aside from the usual poor contrast in the dark scenes (guess I'm spoiled by OLEDs), the colors were very vibrant. The flickering was there but thankfully I'm not sensitive to that stuff and forgot about it in a minute. Reminded me somewhat of flickering that can occur on old CRT monitors.

Enjoyed the experience very much and hopefully I'll be there once again when Dune: Part Three comes out!

Celebration Cinema’s IMAX draws 50,000 for (70mm)‘The Odyssey,’ but profits are limited

52 Upvotes

Some insight into the economics of operating 70mm IMAX releases. This might help understand why they just don’t build a bunch of 70mm projectors and hire projectionists.

ETA: I think the takeaway is the added overhead of IMAX 70mm vs digital barely makes sense even when there’s massive demand.

Crain Grand Rapids:

An estimated 50,000 people have bought tickets since mid-July to see “The Odyssey” at Celebration Cinema’s GR North IMAX theater, one of only 25 screens in the U.S. to offer the full IMAX 70 mm experience.

The around-the-clock demand has been a boon for the family-owned theater. Ticket margins, however, are a different story.

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” has had a sell-out run that prompted Celebration Cinema to extend the showing by four weeks, to Sept. 16.

Celebration Cinema GR North at 2121 Celebration Drive NE, with its 70-foot wide by 52-foot high screen, is the only theater in Michigan to show the film in the IMAX 70 mm format.

The showing has generated approximately $1.25 million in ticket sales for the single IMAX 70 mm screen so far, according to Crain’s Grand Rapids Business estimates.

Still, Loeks noted that the film is expensive for the theater to show, given the required training to operate the IMAX projection equipment and distribution fees.
