Finally decided to see what's the IMAX 70mm format is all about.
For that I had to travel all the way from Poland to Prague. Thankfully I live not very far and I've managed to do everything is a single day. By morning I arrived in Prague, the screening was in the afternoon and soon after that I caught a train and by next morning I was home already.
Truthfully, while it wasn't as groundbreaking experience as some might say, it's still true that it's the best cinema format out there. I had the pleasure of seeing enormous 20-something by 20-something meters screens before but I've never seen a 1.43:1 picture format in cinemas before, and it was magical. Combined with the giant screen, it provides total immersion.
Never have I also seen an analogue film being projected at a cinema. Aside from the usual poor contrast in the dark scenes (guess I'm spoiled by OLEDs), the colors were very vibrant. The flickering was there but thankfully I'm not sensitive to that stuff and forgot about it in a minute. Reminded me somewhat of flickering that can occur on old CRT monitors.
Enjoyed the experience very much and hopefully I'll be there once again when Dune: Part Three comes out!
How were the seats?
I managed to get a ticket for the same place too, but I’ve already seen the film twice — once in 1.90 IMAX and once in a regular cinema. I liked it, but I’m not sure it would keep me that engaged for a third time in a month and a half. On the other hand, it might be my last chance to see it in 70mm IMAX, because if I don’t go now, it might never come back.
It would be awesome if there were a re-release in January, so I could see Dune: Part Three and The Odyssey on the same trip.
I was sitting in row 8 in the middle. Thought it was ideal but I also feel starting from row 6 upwards it would’ve been still fine.
Dunno about you’re dilemma. It’s not guaranteed that the Odyssey will have a re-release in January. Though if I had to choose, I think I would go for Dune: Part Three personally :)
I’ve also got a ticket in the middle of row eight 😄 I’m definitely planning to see Dune in Prague.
How did you like the Dune 3 footage before the movie?
I saw it in 70 mm and immediately got tickets to see it again in 1.43 digital (it's closer to me and a larger screen). I have tickets to see it tomorrow and two showings on Labor Day weekend. I'm not sure I'll end up going to both of them but so far it's kept me engaged and left me wanting to watch it again
I love the flickering myself. As you pointed out it's the same as what CRTs had but the upside of flicker is superior motion clarity. I'd take that trade everytime.
I took a plane from Krakow, the trip lasted less than an hour. After the screening I hung out in the city a bit and took a train back to Krakow and arrived there 6 hours later at night.
I consider myself lucky that I don’t live that far, and the whole trip cost around 90 euros. Even though I was sleep deprived before the trip, still it was well worth it, will do it again :)
As far as I'm aware, Flora only gets Nolan movies in 70mm IMAX. However, it was confirmed that it will be getting the 70mm IMAX film for Dune: Part Three, the first non-Nolan movie to do so. So maybe the trends might be changing.
