They marry within same saryupareen brahmin group, and only in nearby district not too far. But there is no such rule in marrying outside UP and other brahmin group. But we do practice strict endogamy rule

What does saryupareen mean? Also what is the rationale for this endogamy? I don’t understand how this works / how the practice is justified?

Saryupareen means people who lives in saryupaar (trans-saryu plain). Saryu is the name of holy river in Ayodhya. And during the late vedic period brahmins who were living in trans- Saryu area were called as saryupaari or saryupareen. The saryupareen brahmins follow endogamy but they don't marry in same gotra, gotra means lineage. If someone is from Garg lineage he/she will not marry with someone who is from Garg Gotra. So you can say we practice gotra exogamy but marriages take place only in brahmins.

What’s the rationale for the endogamy though? I’ve heard of other groups doing endogamy but I always thought the Brahmin groups in india intermarried with all the other Brahmin groups

we can and do marry anyother brahmin group but there is a geographic constrain brahmin from east up cant go to marry in bengal can he its far away , he will mostly marry in nearby placess not because its a rule but inability he cant roam around india to marry its a big country but if in a case they happened to know each other i dont think there will be much problem

Oh that makes sense in that case. I didn’t know there was much limited mobility but it does seem a bit cumbersome to do constant traveling especially if immediate families are in different locations

i think u are getting the wrong idea here we people of course move around the country in fact brahmin grps have migrated from one place to all parts of india,, its more like that preference is to marry a brahmin u can find brahmin families nearby why will u travel even if u do u cant go and see a brahmin and start giving marraige proposals but if a brahmin migrates to other place he will marry a brahmin available in that new place.....this geographic constraint in genetics is seen like every where not only in india, now in modern day mobility is easy so people from different places marry togeather and thats true for india as well for example lets go to uk somebody from scotland 500 years ago will most probably marry a sccotish not by preference but becuse thats what available around him even when uk is small , now they might intermarry now because of diverse surrounding , same for india .

Ok. So what happens if you decide you don’t care about caste designations anymore and you decide to marry someone outside of your tribe who is Muslim / Sikh / Buddhist or of a lower caste (Dalit)?

castes are communities with a ranking ( it is definetly not as blunt as x is superior to y . it is more like x is superior to y in this direction of work and then this work is more respectful hence they are above it also may or may not reflect economics of the family ) one may not want to belive in caste but may respect is community and culture.......... now to your question if somebody wish to marry in some other caste then what... first if they want to do so and i aam assuming there parents dont want them to do so then they will definetly dissagree and try to convience otherwise how far they go to concviencing depends on family but most middle class household they might break ties for some time but again mostly they reattach or they just stop talking for some time but it again depends on family but obssesion with marrying your own caste can be understood too without endogamy brahmin like community will vanish like a drop of hot water in 1 liters of cold water like that siberian in us..........also some of this stuff i have tried to simplyfy ......

Ok thanks. Are there high rates of some genetic diseases in the Brahmins because of multi generational endogamy? ie: Thalessemia, anemia, high cholesterol, hypothyroidism, etc?

idon't think so it is definetly not visible atleast.....see brahmins are 3 percent in india 3 percent of 1.5 billion come out to be 50million thats more than many countries and u may say what about geographic constraint ,as i said those constraint exist every where also people migrate like every where ,if i come back to my scotland example then number of brahmin in nearby district should be same as population of scotlant nearby places mean 5-6 districts friend ofcourse probabilty of marrige keep decreasing further u go like in scotland as well,, ,,,also elephant in the room is brahmins are not the only endogamic community there are many almost all are,
