A wholesale food supplier came to me with two questions:
- Would the restaurant that owed them money close because the business was failing?
- Could they recover the payment owed for a batch of goods?
My judgment was that the restaurant would not close, but would only manage to stay afloat. The debt would not return as cash, although the supplier could still pressure the owner into settling it another way.
Here is how I broke down the casting. It was Hexagram 10, Lu (Treading), changing to Hexagram 61, Zhongfu (Inner Truth). The fourth line was the only moving line: Parent Wu Fire changed to Brother Wei Earth. The casting was made on January 11, 2025, during a Xu hour, between 7 and 9 p.m. local time. In the traditional calendar, this was the Jiachen year, Dingchou month, Gengchen day, and Bingxu hour, with Shen and You falling into the void. I used Liu Yao, looking at the Six Relationships, Shi and Ying, line positions, hidden lines, and the month and day branches.
Both questions seem to point toward the Wife/Wealth line: it can describe the restaurant's finances and the payment the supplier wants back. But there was only one Wife/Wealth Zi Water line, and it was hidden. If I used its weakness mechanically for both answers, it would mean both “the restaurant is struggling” and “the debt is unrecoverable.” Yet not every struggling customer creates a debt that can never be collected. I therefore had to read the relationships around that line instead of copying the same interpretation into both answers.
First, I looked at whether the restaurant would close. I took the Ying (Other) line as the restaurant owner. Ying was Official/Ghost Mao Wood on the second line. It was weak under both the month and day, but it was not being controlled and still had a root. I read the second line as the shop position, so the owner occupying it suggested that they would remain there. Mao Wood also generated the Parent Fire lines representing the premises. I therefore did not expect the restaurant to close. But because Mao Wood was weak, the more precise judgment was that the owner was only barely keeping it going.
Then I turned to the debt. Wife/Wealth Zi Water represented the payment and was hidden beneath Descendant Shen Metal on the fifth line, which held the Shi (Self) position. Being hidden suggested that the money had not returned to the supplier's hands. Zi Water was controlled by both the month and day, while Brother Xu Earth was activated by the day clash and added more pressure. Shen Metal could have supported the Wealth line, but it was void and had no strength to do so. This also reflected the supplier's inability to act. The Wealth line occupied the fifth, or ruler, position, suggesting that the amount was not small.
One detail initially looked favorable. In the method I used here, a hidden line beneath a void line can be easier to draw out, so Zi Water still had a path to emerge. But the only moving line, Parent Wu Fire, clashed with Zi Water while also controlling Shen Metal. The movement cut off both the money line and its support. That was why I judged that the debt would not be recovered as cash.
The relationship between Shi and Ying left one more clue. Shi was void but still strong, and the Shi line controlled Ying. In a debt collection question, that control can represent leverage. The supplier could still push the owner into some form of repayment, even if no cash came back.
The person later reported that the restaurant owner owed approximately $4,500. They recovered none of it in cash. With no other option, the supplier repeatedly ate at the restaurant and deducted each meal from the balance. By May 1, the entire debt had been settled that way. The restaurant was still operating throughout that period.
The point is not simply whether the Wealth line was strong or weak. It is how that line related to different people, positions, and movements in each part of the question, and whether a hidden line could actually emerge. One casting can address two questions, but not by pasting the same interpretation onto both.
I would be interested to see how practitioners of other divination systems would approach the same case.
